I stayed in the Deauville partly for a business conference and partly for pleasure. Reading other reviews beforehand, I was a bit nervous about staying here, but was pleasantly surprised. I will admit the hotel web site is misleading-- it gives the impression of a very modern, updated hotel and the Deauville isn't-- but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. During my stay, I took the Deauville for what it is-- an older, art deco-styled hotel whose ballroom served as a venue for the Beatles' Ed Sullivan telecast in the 60s and whose rooms housed a number of other celebrities and musicians in its heyday.
The rooms were fairly average (room area itself was nice but could've used a fresh coat of paint, bathroom was outdated), but the view from our oceanview room was quite lovely and we enjoyed the pool area and direct beach access. I definitely recommend either renting a car or setting aside a good amount of money for cabs (we went with the former option) since most shopping and restaurants are further south and not within walking distance. An earlier review states that there is absolutely nothing in the area of the Deauville except "a Cuban deli", but I just want to set the record straight that this isn't correct. If you're in need of something right within walking distance, there is a Walgreen's right across the street for necessities, along with a Dunkin Donuts and an American-style pub with decent burgers. Right up the street is a terrific international cafe with great sandwiches and cappuccinos. Again, definitely rent a car to get to better places, but you're not totally stranded at the Deauville if you need something quickly.
I had nothing but positive experiences with the staff-- I was able to check in quickly and easily at 1pm even though check-in isn't until 3, front desk staffers were very helpful directing me to conference events and local restaurants, and the valets were nothing but courteous and friendly.
My biggest complaint was the wireless internet access; if my stay was strictly for pleasure this wouldn't have been such a big deal, but since I was required for half the trip to stay in contact with my office, the painfully slow internet connection was a big problem. The Deauville's conference services were great, and if plan on continuing to host business conventions here, I suggest investing in more stable ethernet connections for the guest rooms.
