We arrived at the Hampton Inn Atlanta at 1888 Sullivan Road in College Park and were first assigned Room #129. The heating unit was not working. In addition, the room had wear that was not addressed: carpet “baseboard” was tearing from the wall, Internet unit was not working, desk leg with water damage, bathroom door was not squared to fit frame, water leaking in bathtub unless faucet handle tightly torqued all the way to the right, and many scuff marks on wall exposing drywall. Interestingly, there was a dehumidifier in this room.
Because of the broken heater, we were relocated to a much better room within a matter of 30 minutes – Room #412. The heater was much newer and operated at the heater unit rather than with a wall unit as it was in Room #129. The Internet worked flawlessly – it is a wired Internet service (plus Ethernet cord into computer and small unit). However, if calling for technical support, you will receive voice mail with a message that they will call you back when available. No dehumidifier in our new room.
We had left our hotel directions at home and thought that we could find the hotel by driving around. When taking Interstate 75/85 North, one can see the Hampton Inn at 3450 Bobby Brown Parkway (also known as Atlanta Airport North). That property appears to be a couple of years old in comparison to the Hampton Inn Atlanta closer to the area (the latter may have been built in the late 80s, early 90s). The Hampton Inn Atlanta is less than two miles away and staff at the hotel on Bobby Brown Parkway advised that guests for the hotel on Sullivan frequently confuse the hotels. They kindly provided us very easy to follow directions from their facility to the Sullivan Road hotel. In checking the rate, there was a $14 per night difference.
Even when we were briefly in Room #129, the sound of airplanes can be heard intermittently throughout the day. It was not offensive to us, but for those who are sensitive to the sound of aircraft taking off, this may be a problem.
I tried to print our airplane boarding passes in the Business Center (open 24 hours). There was one computer in the room and the printer had a sign on it that said “Out of Order.” The ice machine on our floor also said “Out of Order.”
There is a complimentary hotel shuttle to and from the airport and to nearby restaurants within a 5 mile radius. However, one will need a vehicle to go any farther than the five miles, and there does not appear to be a lot of taxi service in the area. There is a Ruby Tuesday’s restaurant on the opposite side of the street within walking distance that is wonderful! Also, there is a Joe’s On Sullivan Restaurant about half a mile down the street on Riverdale Road, and a few restaurants within neighboring hotels.
Breakfast was sufficient: Muffins, biscuits, donuts, juices, etc. I wanted a bagel but they ran out. The breakfast is more like a hot continental breakfast rather than a full breakfast.
I do believe that the hotel is of good value for the price. The employees are friendly and helpful, so that makes up for a lot. However, there appears to be the underlying theme of things not working properly. If you don’t mind these few broken things and want to save money, then the Hampton Inn Atlanta is sufficient. Otherwise, you may want to spend the extra money by staying elsewhere.
