The construction continues at the Marriott downtown Chicago. Let’s be honest, for those of us that travel a lot, we can view construction as a double edged sword – something that you have to put up with if you expect a property to be new and updated but it can be a painful experience. Unfortunately, this is not the only problem that this hotel faces.
The Marriott has completed some of their updating – with my room having the new carpet, new bathroom fixtures and in general much better than the last time I was here.
Check in was slow, and some of this is due to the temporary check in desk. One can only hope that this process will improve when they get permanent facilities, but one also wonders why it is as slow as it is.
WARNING – for those of you that are quiet sleepers, do NOT take a room near the elevators. I had room 4x12 (forty some odd floors up) which apparently backs to the elevator shaft. It is not the “ding” of the elevators that are the problem, it is the noise itself caused by the elevator going up and down. I checked in very late, and didn’t pay much attention to it, and was too tired to change rooms. BIG mistake. As it turns out, I had to take the ironing board off the hooks in the closet to reduce the vibration of the ironing board caused by the elevator.
Needless to say, I moved rooms the next morning to 3x20 (thirty some odd floors up). The noise did improve quite a bit, but even several rooms away from the elevator shafts, you can still hear the noise. I feel sorry for those people that are in rooms ending in 12 or the other rooms that are very close to the elevators. Of course, if noise doesn’t bother you, then you are fine.
The bathroom is very small, and even with the facelift, the bathroom is still a Marriott bathroom, and there is literally less than a foot between the door and the toilet. It doesn’t appear that they replaced the bathtub during the renovation or mine might have just looked old.
It is a nice location, and for my rate of under $200 per night, seems like a bargain. It can be, but be careful as to what you expect and the room that you check into.
