“Underwhelmed...and it is not just the construction”

Marriott Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile

Mar 30, 2008

The construction continues at the Marriott downtown Chicago. Let’s be honest, for those of us that travel a lot, we can view construction as a double edged sword – something that you have to put up with if you expect a property to be new and updated but it can be a painful experience. Unfortunately, this is not the only problem that this hotel faces.

The Marriott has completed some of their updating – with my room having the new carpet, new bathroom fixtures and in general much better than the last time I was here.

Check in was slow, and some of this is due to the temporary check in desk. One can only hope that this process will improve when they get permanent facilities, but one also wonders why it is as slow as it is.

WARNING – for those of you that are quiet sleepers, do NOT take a room near the elevators. I had room 4x12 (forty some odd floors up) which apparently backs to the elevator shaft. It is not the “ding” of the elevators that are the problem, it is the noise itself caused by the elevator going up and down. I checked in very late, and didn’t pay much attention to it, and was too tired to change rooms. BIG mistake. As it turns out, I had to take the ironing board off the hooks in the closet to reduce the vibration of the ironing board caused by the elevator.

Needless to say, I moved rooms the next morning to 3x20 (thirty some odd floors up). The noise did improve quite a bit, but even several rooms away from the elevator shafts, you can still hear the noise. I feel sorry for those people that are in rooms ending in 12 or the other rooms that are very close to the elevators. Of course, if noise doesn’t bother you, then you are fine.

The bathroom is very small, and even with the facelift, the bathroom is still a Marriott bathroom, and there is literally less than a foot between the door and the toilet. It doesn’t appear that they replaced the bathtub during the renovation or mine might have just looked old.

It is a nice location, and for my rate of under $200 per night, seems like a bargain. It can be, but be careful as to what you expect and the room that you check into.

“terrible...stay away!”

service: we initially found a great deal and reserved through marriott.com. however, after a long day of travel with 2 kids, we checked in at about 10pm they decided to DOUBLE the rate on us, after we had already checked in! the front desk called to our room after the kids had fallen asleep and said the supervisor told them the rate was no longer effective, yet it was on their website! i asked them to compromise b/c it was their mistake but they wouldn't budge. i told them we would find another hotel and they told us "go ahead." so by the a.m. we were in a better hotel with better service and view!

the hotel itself: the front desk had 2 people staffing it and just two parties checking in (including us). however, the other lady at the front desk decided to walk away and not check us in, she told us to wait until the other staffer was done with the first party. hotel entrance was off of machigan ave. and hard to get to b/c of the one way streets. the lobby was a mess with construction going on. we stayed on the 35th floor for one night and could hear the work they were doing! the rooms are very small for 2 adults and 2 small kids. restuarants were meager, weak on selection, bland on food and ridiculous on price ($15 for pastry and piece of fruit)!

would not recommend this hotel. you can find better elsewhere!

“Avoid until construction complete”

Marriott Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile

Mar 18, 2008

I have stayed at this hotel many times without problems but it is currently undergoing a major renovation and that presents many challenges. The entire lobby and a number of meeting rooms are under construction. During the day it can be noisy.

Unless you can't find a better deal, I would recommend avoiding this hotel until the renovations are complete. After construction I am sure it will be back to its high standards and you can't beat the location in downtown Chicago.

One item that doesn't have anything to do with the construction is the overly long delays in answering the phone by hotel staff. It was a noticable problem my last visit. Also, the elevator delays were a big challenge. Plan on ten minutes at least to catch an elevator to and from the lobby.

“Huge Disappointment - "Under Renovation"”

Marriott Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile

I echo the two previous postings. I stayed here for a full week on business and was so excited...until I got there. Consistently a 10-15 minute wait in line just to speak to someone at front desk or to check-in/check-out. Slooooow elevators cannot support the traffic in the hotel at all. Room was very small and had no microwave or mini-fridge. On top of high price, they charged nightly for internet access (free at most $69/night motels) and $39 a night to valet my car - with possibly the WORST valet service I've ever seen. It takes 10 to 15 minutes AT LEAST to get the car out, which can take much longer because their drop-off/pick-up point is on this awful little street FULL of traffic. I waited 15 minutes to complain to the front desk about the valet issue, and I was told "they are run by a separate company that we contract in. If you want to complain blah blah blah."

In-house dining was a joke- there was either a basic boring bar or a snotty restaurant. In-room dining was even worse! An omelette and toast was $24!!!
I did have a beautiful view, but that was definitely the best part of the stay. I would never go back, even after renovations, because I can't even IMAGINE what they will charge then!

“Travelers Beware”

I have just returned from a conference that was held at the Marriott. The advertisement states "under renovation" - THAT IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. The accommodations are worse than an outdated "Motel 6". I cannot believe Marriott International would allow one of their properties to host a convention with the condition and service as I experienced.
The convention host had me upgraded and requested that I do not contact headquarters. In all of my travels, this is the first time that I have complained to the extent that I needed to.
