“Des Moines can do better”

We stayed at the Quality Inn in downtown Des Moines for one night on our way to Minneapolis. Overall, our stay was pretty average for a Quality Inn. The room was clean and staff was friendly. The property is a short walk from the Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall, but not much else.

Our only problem we experienced during our short stay was with the shower. It took about 15 minutes for the water to warm up. We had reported this to the front desk upon check out and they apologized, stating that they had trouble with a water pump that morning, but no credit or adjustment was made on our folio.

Breakfast at the restaurant is included in the room rate, but it isn't much. It is just eggs, waffles and fruit and, since the actual restaurant itself didn't open until lunch, there wasn't the option of ordering additional or other items from the restaurant menu.

If I'm in the Des Moines area again, I'll probably choose one of the other downtown hotel properties (Embassy Suites, Marriott or Renaissance) before coming back to the Quality Inn.

I & my family booked a room for 2 nights (3/17-19) based on AAA's 3 diamond rating & the fact it was across the street from the Wells Fargo Event Center. Bad choice. The room was too small for 2 double beds. It was supposed to be non-smoking but smelled like an ashtray. During the night there were parties in the hallway until 3AM & hotel management made no effort to quiet them. The next morning the hallways were littered with beer cans & the swimming pool was closed due to "water quality issues".
We moved to an Embassy Suites that was a few blocks away. It cost about $25 more, but was worth every penny. The room was truely a suite with a kitchenette, bedroom, & large bathroom. The staff went out of their way to make everyone's stay comfortable & enjoyable.

“Short Walk To Wells Fargo Arena”

We attended a concert in Des Moines and stayed one night on August 28, 2005. We chose this hotel since it is the closest to the new Wells Fargo Arena. It is a very short walk to the Arena.

The hotel is average at best but it was clean and and just remodeled so it served its purpose just fine. We only had a few small complaints. We couldn't help but notice that this hotel had the smallest hotel elevators we had ever seen barely enough room for two people and their luggage!! My wife and I both woke up in the morning with a backache but nothing unbearable.

The restaurant in the hotel has very limited hours and was closed for the day when we arrived at 4pm on Sunday. It was not a problem for us since we stopped to eat on the way from Kansas City however we overheard another family's frustration who was told since it was Sunday they might find a place to eat three of four blocks away. They do offer a free breakfast buffet every morning but we did not have time to try it. We also did not have time to check out the pool or fitness room.

We paid $110.00 Would stay again only if we were going to another concert at Wells Fargo Arena.

“Great view; Average hotel”

We spent 1 night at the Quality. The location is great - right off of 235 and next to the new event center. The view from our room was gorgeous - a view of the river and the capitol building. The room was nice and clean, although it showed some wear and tear. The fitness room is very small and contains only 3 cardio machines and no weight machines. The water in the indoor pool, which we were looking forward to on a 90 degree day, was too warm. The food and service in the hotel restaurant were terrible, although the complimentary breakfast was more than we expected - eggs, meat, waffles, cereal, juice, etc.

“Convenient location, reasonable value”

We spent four days here in Aug '04. The bed was comfortable, the TV was good. Pool and exercise room were OK. Staff was friendly. Full breakfast was included and was decent. The air conditioner was noisy and not as effective as I might have liked. If it was off, it was clear that the sound-proofing between rooms wasn't completely successful. There isn't much around it until you walk six or eight blocks. But it's easy to drive from to most places, being so central and close to the highway and to 2nd and 3rd Avenue. I would stay here again.
