I was satisfied for the most part with my stay in this hotel. But for the price, I felt the service was very poor. The breakfast was fantastic, but when we went to the restaurant for a meal, the service was ghastly. We stood by a table for 15 min. waiting for it to be bussed. No staff came near us. We finally found a towel & cleaning solution sitting on an another table & took that & bussed our own table. We sat another 30 min. before a waitress came anywhere near us. She was 78 years old & when we commented that they must be understaffed today (on a week-end when the hotel was full up), she said it was that way all the time. No one to buss tables, no help in taking orders & delivering the meals. We only spotted about 3 people for the entire restaurant.
The rooms were ok, but not that much better than a budget hotel - certainly not for the amount of money we paid.
However, the proximity to Wells Fargo Arena made still made it a good choice.

“Great Suites, Plan to Return Again!”

My wife and I spent three nights here for our honeymoon October 29th-November 1st, 2005. When we arrived, the front desk staff did a great job of getting us checked in, and even provided us with a room upgrade to the nicest suite they had avaliable, which was a bonus. The suite was very clean and impressive, and had a great view of the river and downtown Des Moines. It featured a kitchenette with a microwave, mini-fridge, and sink, and table and chairs for two. The living room area had nice furniture and a large screen TV. The bed was comfortable, and the bedroom itself was spacious and clean. The bathroom was also large, especially for a hotel bathroom!

The halls were quiet and clean, and the free breakfast buffet was the best of any hotel we have stayed at! It was definately worth the price per night for a suite, even at the normal rates, and we are planning to use this hotel again if we ever need to stay downtown.

    • Liked — Stunning views of downtown Des Moines and the river!
    • Disliked — Getting there from I-235, but that may have been partially due to road construction of I-235

“Des Moines can do better”

We stayed at the Quality Inn in downtown Des Moines for one night on our way to Minneapolis. Overall, our stay was pretty average for a Quality Inn. The room was clean and staff was friendly. The property is a short walk from the Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall, but not much else.

Our only problem we experienced during our short stay was with the shower. It took about 15 minutes for the water to warm up. We had reported this to the front desk upon check out and they apologized, stating that they had trouble with a water pump that morning, but no credit or adjustment was made on our folio.

Breakfast at the restaurant is included in the room rate, but it isn't much. It is just eggs, waffles and fruit and, since the actual restaurant itself didn't open until lunch, there wasn't the option of ordering additional or other items from the restaurant menu.

If I'm in the Des Moines area again, I'll probably choose one of the other downtown hotel properties (Embassy Suites, Marriott or Renaissance) before coming back to the Quality Inn.

“Left after 1 night”

I & my family booked a room for 2 nights (3/17-19) based on AAA's 3 diamond rating & the fact it was across the street from the Wells Fargo Event Center. Bad choice. The room was too small for 2 double beds. It was supposed to be non-smoking but smelled like an ashtray. During the night there were parties in the hallway until 3AM & hotel management made no effort to quiet them. The next morning the hallways were littered with beer cans & the swimming pool was closed due to "water quality issues".
We moved to an Embassy Suites that was a few blocks away. It cost about $25 more, but was worth every penny. The room was truely a suite with a kitchenette, bedroom, & large bathroom. The staff went out of their way to make everyone's stay comfortable & enjoyable.

“Short Walk To Wells Fargo Arena”

We attended a concert in Des Moines and stayed one night on August 28, 2005. We chose this hotel since it is the closest to the new Wells Fargo Arena. It is a very short walk to the Arena.

The hotel is average at best but it was clean and and just remodeled so it served its purpose just fine. We only had a few small complaints. We couldn't help but notice that this hotel had the smallest hotel elevators we had ever seen barely enough room for two people and their luggage!! My wife and I both woke up in the morning with a backache but nothing unbearable.

The restaurant in the hotel has very limited hours and was closed for the day when we arrived at 4pm on Sunday. It was not a problem for us since we stopped to eat on the way from Kansas City however we overheard another family's frustration who was told since it was Sunday they might find a place to eat three of four blocks away. They do offer a free breakfast buffet every morning but we did not have time to try it. We also did not have time to check out the pool or fitness room.

We paid $110.00 Would stay again only if we were going to another concert at Wells Fargo Arena.
