“Good downtown place to stay, uncomfortable beds”

Hotel Fort des Moines

3 of 5 stars
Ames, IA
Aug 3, 2008

We stayed here for the Iowa Cubs package which was great. The shuttle was very convenient. We all woke up with sore backs, though, and we even paid extra for a suite. The beds are getting kind of old. Also, there were no snack machines in the building anywhere but the clerk opened up the gift shop so I could shop in the dark. Very friendly, helpful staff, and close to restaurants. Free parking available nearby (not in hotel parking) on the weekends. Overall, I don't think we would do it again because we like to wake up without back pain.

    • Liked — Location--close to great restaurants, downtown life, and the ball park
    • Disliked — The beds were very uncomfortable

“Don't stay here!”

Hotel Fort des Moines

What a dump! Stinky, rundown, and rude staff. Bathtub didn't work and rooms and hallway are filthy. After reading other traveler's reviews, we were shocked by what we found. It is on the outskirts of Downtown Des Moines, not near anything. Our presidintial candidates deserve a nicer place to stay.We were booked for 4 nights, and checked out after first night. For the rest of our stay we were at another Historic restored hotel built the same year, so much nicer, and right in Downtown Des Moines, also was cheaper and was obvious more people had chosen to stay there!

“Good Weekend Getaway”

Hotel Fort des Moines

4 of 5 stars
Omaha, NE
Jul 9, 2008

We stayed here during the 80/35 music festival July 4-5 in a suite. This hotel was perfect for us. The festival was 3 blocks away and we were within walking distance of many bars and restaurants. It is also connected to the downtown sky-walk. They had a neat British looking taxi to take you with 5 miles of the hotel. We really enjoyed eating at Django and had no problems getting in without a reservation on a busy Saturday night.

The suites are incredibly spacious. It really felt like home. It had a small kitchen, a living room with tv and a separate bedroom with a 2nd tv. The bathroom was a bit dingy, but it served it's purpose. The doors have about a 2 inch gap from the floor, so you can hear EVERYTHING as you walk down the hall. The hotel had a lot of character. It reminded me of the Shining as I stumbled down the hallways after a full day of drinking. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and will be back. It is nice quick getaway from Omaha and the price is right.

“pretty neat place!”

Hotel Fort des Moines

4 of 5 stars
Union Grove, Wisconsin
May 23, 2008

a friend and i were in des moines for the weekend and we had somehow forgotten to reserve a room! we found a room at the hotel fort des moines, and it was a pretty good experience. the room was small, it had 1 double bed,but that was certainly not the hotel's fault, it was our own for forgetting and we were glad to find anything! the bathroom was good sized, the soaps, etc that were provided were good quality... the only problem we had the whole time was that the bathtub did not drain well. but eh, could definitely have been worse! it is a charming place to stay, and i would certainly stay there again.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — atmosphere! i love staying in historic places
    • Disliked — room service and in-house restaurant close a bit early, in my opinion

“Great location and excellent service!”

Hotel Fort des Moines

5 of 5 stars
Northern Missouri
Apr 24, 2008

Hotel Fort Des Moines is a charming, older hotel connected to all the dowtown buidlings by a skywalk. We were there over the weekend and had an excellent experience. The hotel has a tremendous amount of history including visits by all the political candidates during the Iowa caucus. We would recommend this hotel to everyone. There is also good dining in the area including the Racoon River Brewery.
