Laura Plantation is less than an hour's drive away from New Orleans so if you can get there, you should definitely include it in your agenda.
There are 6 tours a day, the first leaving at 10am and the last at 4pm. Show your CAA or AAA card for a discount off the $15 guided tour tickets. Our tour guide's name was Pam and for over an hour she was full of stories about the house and the generations of women who ran the plantation. It was so interesting. Besides the Creole house, we got to walk the grounds and visit one of the remaining slaves quarters.
The staff are very friendly and well informed. The tour was not rushed and the guides only take one group at a time through the house. The 12:30 tour we took had about 15 people many were also on the Oak Alley tour with us earlier that morning. Oak Alley may have the majestic oak trees but Laura Plantation's history is just as intriguing.
You'll see family heirlooms and photographs through the house with many original furnishings. Should not be missed - great educational opportunity, captivating recollections and you'll learn something about Brer Rabbit!
