“A hell of a lot of character. Oak and gas fireplaces everywhere.”

Clarion Hotel & Conference Center

Feb 18, 2008

Don't judge this book by it's cover. The outside is not very nice, However, once I went in...wow! This hotel is a flashback to the 1970s. Oak everywhere, gas fireplaces and sitting areas everywhere...lots of nooks and crannys. It does have some issues, but overall it was a very interesting place with a lot of character and interesting layout. The center of the hotel is a dome that is over an indoor pool, with hallways like arms that spread out from the pool. Each hall opens into a large family room type setting with gas fireplaces sitting areas and soft couches..Oak everywhere from floor to ceiling. This was a super high class hotel in the 1970s (think it used to be a Hilton) and it is nice to see that places like this still exist. It could use a little work.(leaking problems form the dome over the pool in heavy rain), but over all it was very interesting highclass retro place. Nice steakhouse and bar right on the premises. If you are looking for a place with character and are not high maintanence then this is the place for you. The rooms are clean and modern. They were renovated in 2006. I would still rate this as a 2.5 star hotel, just because of the small structural issues it has. It would have been a 4 star back in the day. Stay here, and support these old classics.

“Creaky Convenience”

Clarion Hotel & Conference Center

Rooms and furniture were old and could have used better maintenance. Winter heating is a bit noisy and uneven. Hallways were dank and musty-smelling.

Convenience was excellent. Other affordable lodging available in Hadley, but you'll get stuck in the Coolidge Bridge traffic going back to Northampton.

I managed a small discount from AMEX and was a little disappointed in the quality, but try getting a steep discount like others indicated in the their reviews and you'll be OK. I had to be there quick, so I didn't have to to fuss around with price comparisons

Breakfast buffet at Montana Restaurant was so-so.

“Pleasantly Surprised!”

Because of reviews we'd read we were a little worried, but we ended up very happy. We stayed 2 nights. The room was big, clean, quiet with no unpleasant odors and the bed was very comfortable. It was a great location close to town center & great restauraunts. The exterior looked much better than the photos & the indoor pool was great! The second day the water was a little cooler, but all in all a pleasure. They also have free internet in the lobby, a bar & fireplace, and compared to what other reviews led us to expect, we were very pleased!

Thank you to all whom have enjoyed our hotel we hope you all return soon.

We have made some minor changes to our restaurant and have listened to many of your comments. Montana's Steakhouse is now Montana's Tavern offering a lighter menu. Our customer's requested more casual dinning and we listened. The menu and the prices are a bit more casual and friendly for visitors whom want to enjoy a meal in the lounge or by the pool. The menu includes Appetizers, Salads, Sandwiches and Burgers. Montana's Tavern Opens at 4:30 PM each afternoon.

Our outdoor pool is now open as is the outdoor pool cafe offering a full array of food and beverage perfect for enjoying uder the sun.

Thank you again for visiting us and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Very impressed with the hotel, one of the nicest we booked via Priceline.

Quite a long walk from reception to our room but no problems with room.

Pool was a bit chilly.

The Sierra Grille restaurant in the town centre serves excellent food at a reasonable price.

“Pretty nice place”

When I ended up with this hotel through a Priceline bid, I was really apprehensive, given some reviews I had read. We stayed for three nights, a nice room with 2 queen beds, fronting on the indoor pool, with all upgraded amenities. The configuration of the hotel is a bit strange, but it is an easy walk inside to the lobby/restaurant area. There is free internet access in the lobby, a nice coffee area and a bowl of apples, plus a gas fireplace. The only negative thing that really mattered to me was that the hotel had switched off all air conditioning and so the thermostat only worked for heat, and you couldn't even get just a fan option without it blowing hot air. I like
to have ventilation at night, preferably cool air, but the room was really hot even without putting the heat on and so we had to prop up the plastic patio chairs in front of the sliding glass door, and also put the desk chair in front of the door, and leave it open somewhat during the night, just to get some air exchange. That does not make me feel absolutely secure during the night, but my husband and I agreed that we had to do it to lower the room temperature somewhat.
The front desk confirmed that there was no cooling option at this time of the year, and said that the room temperature would "correct itself" if the thermostat was turned to "off". I don't think that was really a possibility.

We did eat in the steakhouse, Montana's one night and it was very good
and we got a 20% discount off our bill because we were hotel guests!
This hotel is right off I-91 but there doesn't seem to be any noise from the Interstate. Having said that, it is located about 2 miles out of Northampton and is quite isolated, but that was fine with us, because we had to use our car anyway to get to our destination which was a college in nearby Amherst.

Also, one of the sinks had the faucet temperatures reversed from what they normally are - the cold was really hot and the hot was cold. Once
I figured that out, it was OK.

But, it was a great place to stay for the price we paid ($46 a night thru Priceline). I think it would qualify as a 2 1/2 star or possibly as a 3 star, which is what Priceline puts it at. It does however have some quirks to put up with.
