First, a more appropriate rating is 9/10 because it's better than 4 out of 5. My wife and I loved everything about our stay, except one small thing that was enough to make it not perfect. I'll get to that later. We went the first week of the off season (June 1st), which I highly recommend to save some money. We stayed in Sol 2 ($100) for the first 3 nights, and Bungalow 1 ($125) the last 4 nights.
Sol 2 is *very* small - BUT, it's has the most amazing view overlooking the ocean and has it's own 2-level terrace. The view right outside your door cannot be better. The same from the terrace. We loved having our own lounge chairs just outside our room over looking the ocean. It allowed you easy access to your room while still getting all the sun you could want. The bad was the room as I said is very small, and with the door closed, there wasn't a lot of airflow. There is an oscillating fan above the bed, but it is loud and the oscillation can't be adjusted, so every 5 seconds your hot, then getting pounded by the fan. That said, we still loved the room, we just didn't sleep that well.
Bungalow 1 was great. Nicely sized and very open. The downside is it's about 100 yards up a hill from the beach. No biggy, you're just not getting an ocean view. It's also more of a jungle setting, so as another person mentioned, I recommend ear plugs as there's lots of wild-life noises with the birds and land-crabs rustling through the foliage. Bungalow 1 is also very private, which was very nice.
If you plan on staying in Sol 2, I recommend splitting the time between sol 2 and another room for a rounded experience. We were happy we did.
The restaurant was good enough. Not spectacular, but good. Since you have $100/person restaurant credit you pay up front, it was fine to eat there a couple of nights. That said, for what you can get for $60 dollars (2 * $30) in Sayulita, you can eat like a king, and that includes the taxi. In town there are some fantastic places to eat. I recommend MangaFucio (italian), Medusa (seafood), Burrito Revolution, and any of the shack tacquarias.
The staff. The staff were all fantastic save one. The manager, Nova, was either PMS'ing, burnt out after a long season, or just spread-to-thin, because when ever you needed something or had a question, instead of saying "how can I help you", her response was "what do you want" through a window screen you couldn't even see her through. That was a bummer. You shouldn't need to feel awkward or like you're troubling her, especially when everything else about the place is so great. This attitude happened more than once, and was collaborated by several other (great) couples we met there (hi guys!), who had worse stories about her than we did. For us this was just a minor annoyance, but it still kept it from being a "perfect" vacation. That said, it could just have been she was burnt out after a busy season.
All in all it was awesome and we highly recommend it!
PS> the pool is AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!
