First, a more appropriate rating is 9/10 because it's better than 4 out of 5. My wife and I loved everything about our stay, except one small thing that was enough to make it not perfect. I'll get to that later. We went the first week of the off season (June 1st), which I highly recommend to save some money. We stayed in Sol 2 ($100) for the first 3 nights, and Bungalow 1 ($125) the last 4 nights.

Sol 2 is *very* small - BUT, it's has the most amazing view overlooking the ocean and has it's own 2-level terrace. The view right outside your door cannot be better. The same from the terrace. We loved having our own lounge chairs just outside our room over looking the ocean. It allowed you easy access to your room while still getting all the sun you could want. The bad was the room as I said is very small, and with the door closed, there wasn't a lot of airflow. There is an oscillating fan above the bed, but it is loud and the oscillation can't be adjusted, so every 5 seconds your hot, then getting pounded by the fan. That said, we still loved the room, we just didn't sleep that well.

Bungalow 1 was great. Nicely sized and very open. The downside is it's about 100 yards up a hill from the beach. No biggy, you're just not getting an ocean view. It's also more of a jungle setting, so as another person mentioned, I recommend ear plugs as there's lots of wild-life noises with the birds and land-crabs rustling through the foliage. Bungalow 1 is also very private, which was very nice.

If you plan on staying in Sol 2, I recommend splitting the time between sol 2 and another room for a rounded experience. We were happy we did.

The restaurant was good enough. Not spectacular, but good. Since you have $100/person restaurant credit you pay up front, it was fine to eat there a couple of nights. That said, for what you can get for $60 dollars (2 * $30) in Sayulita, you can eat like a king, and that includes the taxi. In town there are some fantastic places to eat. I recommend MangaFucio (italian), Medusa (seafood), Burrito Revolution, and any of the shack tacquarias.

The staff. The staff were all fantastic save one. The manager, Nova, was either PMS'ing, burnt out after a long season, or just spread-to-thin, because when ever you needed something or had a question, instead of saying "how can I help you", her response was "what do you want" through a window screen you couldn't even see her through. That was a bummer. You shouldn't need to feel awkward or like you're troubling her, especially when everything else about the place is so great. This attitude happened more than once, and was collaborated by several other (great) couples we met there (hi guys!), who had worse stories about her than we did. For us this was just a minor annoyance, but it still kept it from being a "perfect" vacation. That said, it could just have been she was burnt out after a busy season.

All in all it was awesome and we highly recommend it!

PS> the pool is AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!

Wasn't quite sure what to expect, even though the pictures on the website looked wonderful. When I arrived I was so pleasantly surprised that it was even better in real life. The pool, restaurant, beach, and grounds create a wonderful atmosphere for relaxation. The people that work there and stayed there were all very friendly and I must say that I think I've found a place I can return to many many times. I won't say which room I stayed in since I want to make sure its available the next time I book :) Sorry but true! Go down and see for your self, truly a wonderful experience.

“Can't Wiat to Go Back...”

Playa Escondida

My husband and I stayed at Playa Escondida in April for 10-days. It was absolutely fantastic, we loved every minute and can't wait to go back. We just booked our second trip for November. We stayed in the Guest House for the majority of our stay and the Cabana for the last two nights. The Guest House is high on the hill, but we liked that it was off the beaten path. The Cabana was fun, but a little too close to the other rooms, but still very comfortable. The drinking water in the rooms was great, housekeeping awesome, and the staff at the bar and all throughout the resort were very accomodating. We rented a car and went on adventures to Punta de Mita, San Pancho and Sayulita during the daytime. We never walked into town, but heard from other guests that it wasn't that much fun. The food was fantastic, but the chef that was there in April is leaving this year to open his own restaurant in Puerto Vaharatta, which is disappointing b/c we loved his food. We ate many meals at the restaurant and never had one bad experience. Town is so funky and fun and Sayulita Fish Taco can't be missed. We also enjoyed Don Pedro's for a high-end dinner right on the beach. Ok, are you sick of my review yet? I can't say enough about Playa Escondida, book your trip if you like adventure! You won't be disappointed! If you're looking for the four seasons, this isn't it.

This is a belated review...We stayed in March in Bungalow 1. It was like sleeping in a treehouse w/ no walls. Rustic, yet somehow chic. That kind of describes the whole place. Funky charm, but not luxurious. Food was very good, not great. Pool was fine. Sunsets beautiful. Beach gorgeous..but: waves too rough to really swim when we were there. But what really made the place for us, the service. Personal, yet not intrusive. The day after we arrived, we had a family emergency, causing us to have to return to the States within 48 hours. The owner's wife got our information, made ALL the return flight and taxi plans for us, and told us to just go sit and relax on the beach. THAT is SERVICE! Though it was a very stressful time, she made it better, something which we'll never forget, and can never thank enough. Playa Escondida is not for everyone. It is special!

We just got back from a week-long vacation, and we loved this place. We stayed in Villa 2, which was fantastic. But we got peeks inside the other villas, which were also very nice. Next time, I'd probably go for one with a King bed, but that's the only thing I'd do differently. All the rooms/cabanas are unique and very well-designed. Just fantastic. The pool is amazing, and the beach was swimmable, too.

We also enjoyed the restaurant. We had about half of our meals there, and went into town for the other half.

We both had a great massage, too.

It was very romantic, even though we had our 9-week old daughter with us.

Best of all, the service. The staff was very excellent. So friendly! We'd definitely stay here again, and I hope to soon.
