I ate at Jack Stack in the Country Club Plaza twice over a long weekend. Both times, I came away thinking that the meat was poor to average, but the side dishes were fantastic.
I ate two different types of burnt ends - pork and beef and I also had the sliced pork and beef brisket. All of the meats were pretty fatty and lacking flavor unless you covered them with sauce. Speaking of which, the sauces were pretty good. The original is pretty tasty, and the spicy reminded me of a really good bloody mary - very tasty.
Where the meats were a disappointment, I will go back to the Jack Stack for the side dishes. The baked beans might be the best I've ever had - rich and sweet with pieces of meat baked in. The cheesy cornbake is corn in a rich cheese sauce with chunks of smoked ham. It was simply incredible.
The next time I'm in KC, I'll get my barbecue fix somewhere else, but I'll probably make time to have some Jack Stack sides.
