We are frequent visitors to Las Vegas and thought we'd stay off strip this trip. We chose MonteLago after doing some research online and because we have had previous good experiences at Intrawest properties. We were attracted by the website pictures and the value of having a condo with a full kitchen and living room for our family of four (saving on breakfast and snacks, etc).
This is definitely away from the Vegas glitz....and everything else! There is a little village that they hype online, but we only found one of the shops and a couple of restaurants open. The one restaurant we did eat in, Sonrisa, was very good.
The condo was adequately appointed with the exception of no TV in the 2nd bedroom. It also did not look as modernly decorated as the pictures I viewed on the website. The view of the lake from the good-sized balcony was beautiful, but it was too hot at any time of the day to enjoy. That's not the property's fault, but misters would've been wonderful.
The kitchen was stocked with pots, pans, plates, etc., but only had 1 teaspoon and 2 serving spoons. There was a combo washer/dryer in the 2nd bedroom closet which was a great feature but it had no directions for use and the night clerk at the desk knew nothing about it. We had an ironing board, but no iron. A call downstairs brought one to us in about 20 minutes.
The bed in the master bedroom was HORRIBLE; you could feel the springs and it left us with back aches every morning. (Perhaps to encourage a trip to the local spa for a massage?) Our kids said their bed was okay. The living room stayed nice and cool with the air on, but at night the master became stifling.
The small fitness room was adequate but I believe it would've been better to have fewer treadmills/bikes and have a second elliptical instead. The Game Room was very small, very dirty and had the game pieces scattered all over the room. There was an air hockey table that appeared to work, but NO PUCK. (Game is much less fun without it. :)
The pools were in bad need of cleaning with black gunk visible on the tiles and dirty ashtrays on many of the tables. It would've been great if they could've been cooler as they felt like bath water, but I don't know if that's possible in the Vegas heat.
A word about the golf courses: they are spectacular! The staff is great and the courses are unbelievable. Just gorgeous. The hotel is supposed to have a shuttle from the hotel to the course starting at 7 am. By 7:30 it still had not shown so after I complained an employee took me to the course. The course-provided shuttle back to the hotel was prompt and provided excellent service.
Our maid service was sporadic; the first day we were up and out early and gone most of the day so we did receive service. The 2nd day we had the "Do Not Disturb" sign out until about 10am. That meant we got no service that day. The 3rd day we learned our lesson and kept the sign off the door but when the maid came at 9:30 we asked her to come back in about 10 minutes. We then left for just over 2 hours and came back to find her just starting. At that point I became irritated with all of the above and complained to the manager. Their response was a little slow at first, but they eventually came around to try to address all of our concerns and left a bottle of champagne and an apology in our room the last day along with a 30% discount on our last day's stay.
All in all, unless they improved some of the quality I would probably choose Lowes or Ritz-Carlton next time. The price difference was not enough for the aggravation. If you are any kind of golfer, don't miss these courses, though.
