“Needs work”

Grand Sierra Resort & Casino

3 of 5 stars
Camarillo, California
Nov 19, 2007

This place has been under construction supposedly, since it used to be the Hilton. In my opinion it still needs a lot of work. Most of the hotel is quite modern and impressive, with lots of options/amenities including fine restaurants, a pretty big work out room, a movie theatre playing movies out in theatres such as Bourne Ultimatum and 310 to Yuma for only $3, a bowling alley, arcade, a Starbucks, casino of course, and an underground shopping center. It has TON of convention space as well. However, the guestrooms need work (at least the ones that haven't been renovated yet). Furniture is older and chipping, and the internet is ANCIENT - the room had an ethernet cable, with internet completely unreliable and crashing every few minutes (worse than dial up). It advertises wi-fi, but I did not find that to be the case. The heater/AC also looks ancient and did not seem to work. The toiletries they provide are bare-boned, just shampoo (no conditioner) and soap, not even a coffee-maker. On the plus side, they have a very convenient free airport shuttle, an on-site Enterprise rental car office (open only to 3 or 4 pm). Close by is a bungee jumping/go-carting track, driving range. I'll gladly return once they've remodeled.

“Very Nice”

We went and stayed at the Grand Sierra in the Summitt Rooms and found them to be very nice and well appointed- especially for what you normally experience in Reno. An added bonus is that the summitt rooms are all smoke free! We enjoyed the Italian restaurent and the steak house- a little pricey but excellent food and service!- Considering what is available in Reno as far as nice accomodations go, we would definately return to the Summitt

“Really enjoyed the Summit”

Grand Sierra Resort & Casino

Oct 23, 2007

I've seen the reports on the GSR and can say I'm glad we stayed in the Summit rooms. We had been located at another hotel in the Reno area for our first night and could not stand another night. We called around and were told a room at the Summit was available. We were skeptical but were very pleased when we arrived in our room. The room was decorated a bit dark, but very nicely done. A flat screen tv, many lights, a great bar areas with a microwave, coffeemaker and a small fridge were all new and very clean. The bathroom was done vin a brown marble with a small flatscreen tv mounted on the wall. The beds were very comfortable and the linens were great.
We stopped for Starbucks and bagels downstairs, but otherwise did not utilize the restaurants.
Had a great time and would recommend the Summit rooms in a heartbeat.

“Stay away unless you like being around rude staff and getting ripped off”

Grand Sierra Resort & Casino

I was really excited about taking my family to this so called "resort".

The place sounds great on paper it has a movie theater, arcade, shops, lots of restaurants, miniature golf, bungee jumping, go cart track, and soon an indoor water slide park. WOW sounds great! If you go online and look at pictures of their standard rooms they look clean and comfortable but the reality is a far cry from the hype.

When we first arrived we had to wait in line for 20 minutes to register; this was on a Tuesday. The lady at the registration desk asked me if i had a preference of room location, I told her close to the elevators, she put us at the end of the longest hallway I have ever seen; I am not exaggerating this place was huge.

The room in the picture online in no way represents the room they gave us. Our room was filthy I would rather stay in a motel 6 any day. The sheets were stained and the furniture honestly looked like it had been picked up at a yard sale. the carpet was dirty green early 80's. the bed was lumpy and leaned back so that your feet were a couple of inches higher than your head. The curtains and bedspread were a hot pink and orange train wreck I'd say mid 80's.

I called the front desk and had a twenty minute argument about the state of the room, they were nonapologetic and she addmited that this was a common compliant. She said that the picture on the internet is just an addvertsment and dose not look anything like the rooms they offer. She told me that none of the standard rooms had been remodeled.

I wanted to leave but my wife wanted to stay so she had me take her to walmart to buy sheets and pillows for the bed. We also bought disinfectant cleaner and spent most of our first night cleaning the room.

I have stayed in allot of hotel rooms and this was by far the filthiest I have seen.

The arcade that boasts 40,000 SQ ft of games has less than most others in reno, they just space the machines out.

The movie theater only plays movies that are already on video.

The restaurants are over priced and aren't as good as others in Reno. The Buffet is $19.00 per person for dinner compared to $12 at the Pepper Mill which has much better food.

The staff was extremely rude at every turn.

all of the pamphlets and menus in the room were inaccurate several times we went somewhere in the hotel that was supposed to be open but no longer had the same hours as listed.

They try to hide the fees that they charge for extras like internet and pay per view movies if you want to know how much they cost you have to call the front desk. who as I have mentioned was very rude and condescending.

We left two days early, because we just could not stand the place any longer.

It is a shame because that place has a lot of potential but so far it is failing to live up to it.

I will keep my eye on it, maybe in two or three years things will settle down a little.

“Still a bit shabby but big and clean”

We arrived at the GSR early afternoon and checked in with no problems. As previously mentioned, they are doing the place up. Whilst we couldn't see any construction work, there were 'artists impressions' of what the place will look like when finished.

The rooms are huge, though quite worn. We had a king sized bed which was comfortable.

When staying here, be aware that it is not near downtown Reno. It's about 5 mins drive away. We ate dinner in the cafe which was reasonably priced and bought breakfast from the little shop in the casino (opp Starbucks) that had a whole bunch of food in to-go containers. It was nice to have fresh fruit and yoghurt after travelling for many days!

Given the price (just under $100) I would stay there again if in Reno, though saying that, I've been to Reno now and can't really envision going back anytime soon.

Also, as previously mentioned, they has this psychadelic green and red western pattern thing going on in the hallways which hurts your eyes.
