“Great place for kids 5-12”

Liberty Science Center

4 of 5 stars
Mid-Hudson Valley, New York
Feb 4, 2008

I went to the Liberty Science Center with my 6 year old and 3 year old sons. We had a great time! We arrived at 9:00 a.m. before the crowds arrived and headed straight for the skyscraper exhibit on the 1st floor (fun for young kids, I'd say under 10 years). The second floor had a science demonstration while we ate the lunches we brought from home. (The cafeteria had some items that my kids may have eaten but it was expensive and had a limited selection of foods). The 3rd & 4th floors are really worth the trip(geared for all ages especially 10 year olds and older)- there was an animal demonstration on the 3rd floor and a water exhibit that the boys got to get their hands wet in (bring hand sanitizer). Overall, the cost is high but I paid only $5 because I'm a teacher and had my id with me. It was fun and we will definitely go again. The only negative was that some parts to exhibits were not functioning but overall, lots of hands-on activities and worth the money. (We skipped the I-Max theater so I have no information for you on this.)

Sorry Liberty Science Center: we wanted to love you, but the relationship is over!

What a disappointment. The "renovated" Liberty Science Center was the choice for my son's 14th birthday excursion. Perhaps one of the only things geared to his age group was the cartoon of "Condom Man" and all the information on safe sexual practices. He learned that if you have sex with one person, it's like having sex with everyone that person has had sex with. Exceptionally inappropriate for a kids' science museum. If (as a curator for children's museum) you want to talk about epidemiology, talk about Strep -- or more about the common cold, & not so much about AIDS and herpes sores.

Other than the offensive AIDS/safe sex plaques, the museum is a total dud. Too many plaques to read for the little ones, too much empty space -- empty walls, like they ran out of money and ideas -- too many stairs. You enter the building and see just the gift shop, walk up the stairs to see the first exhibit and see only the wide open space of the dining area -- it's like the exhibits are ancillary to the money-making aspects of the museum.

Our advice: check out the Franklin Institute in Philly or go to the Natural History Museum in the City.

“All New Liberty Science Center is Awesome”

Wow -- I love the old LSC but the all new one is so cool. Skyscraper is huge and you can walk on a beam 18 feet off the floor. Infection Connection has a really cool nose with a surprise and there are huge fish from the Hudson River on the top floor. The IMAX is still huge and the Mummies film was great. Be sure to visit this place!

Go here if you have kids and they have some discounts / get a free pass or something. For adults, if you are already in technical fields, you have very little that is interesting here. It tries to cover too many things in too little a depth. You might as well spend that money on a visit to an aquarium or at a different museum.

On our visit, the imax theater was closed ( no reason given ). The 3d theater (3d Sun ) was a below average production. The narrative is not good. Only a couple of places, you really enjoy the 3d effect without straining your eyes.

the islamic science exhibhit was good. the animal exhibhits were good. but you do not to go to this place for these exhibhits.

the next time i have to take somebody to this place, i would first find out if they have seen the state aquarium, the museum of natural history and the air and space musems, and the metropolitan art museum. if they have, then no. i would advise them to spend their money elsewhere. if they havent seen any of the above, then this will be put last on their list.

“A Great Place to Spend the Day While Learning About Science”

In March of 2005 we visited Liberty Science Center. Six hours later we could not believe it was already 3:30 p.m. We arrived at 9:30 when they opened, as advised, and were able to experience all of the "hot spots" without the crowds that later flooded the museum. Our group included two adults, an 8 year old and a 10 year old. What makes this museum a cut above is the hourly demonstrations on topics such as "It's Electric" and "How to Make Ice Cream with Nitrogen". These involve audience participation (kids only!) and they just loved it. Also, they have docents throughout the museum who engage guests in the displays; this kept us from walking right past some displays we might have otherwise ignored. The museum is a nice size, plenty to see but not overwhelming. The Imax theatre has great chairs which are more reclined than some other theatres; this makes it easier to see all angles without craning your neck. Finally, it was a pleasant surprise that the cafeteria has really good food! The key is to make a left when you enter and go to the Mexican Food section. They had 2 specials; roast pork loin with rice and vegetables and a grilled salmon. The rest of the choices involved burritos, etc. and there were other sections for pizza and other more "standard" choices. They offer Starbuck's coffee for those who arrived without time to brew a pot at home.
