We attended a wedding reception at The Breakers, stayed the night and then attended brunch in the morning. The hotel is all about the location. The beach is just across the street and there are no obstructions to the beautiful view. And because of that most guests can easily ignore the fact the building and the rooms could use an overhaul.

We stayed in a Petite Queen with no view - a $220 room in season according to their website. Since we were there as part of a room block in the off-season, the room was much less. It was worth the off-season price but I would think twice about the in-season price considering the room. It was smaller than a typical hotel room (closer in size to a Euro hotel room) with a bed, closet, dresser and a small table with two chairs. It was outdated but very clean. The bathroom was also clean and it had a whirlpool tub as described on the website.

It was an unseasonably warm April day so when I entered the room the thermostat read 79 degrees. I went immediately to the air conditioner (a regular window unit installed below the window) and cranked it up to high. After being out of the room and at the wedding for the next six hours, we came back to a cooler but not cold room. I was surprised that the place wasn't freezing which was fine with us but figure this may be an issue for those who stay in July and August.

Another thing that came to our attention during our stay was that if the hotel is hosting a wedding, the regular hotel guests are overrun by wedding guests. The cocktail hour began at 6pm and by 6:15 the 200 guests attending the wedding had taken over the valet parking, the main lobby and the outside porch. Since the cocktail hour room was too small to hold the entire wedding, we spilled out into the common areas and into the faces of unsuspecting guests. In addition, I can't imagine that we were all too quiet after the reception when we continued the party out on the porch and then the beach till 1am.

Lastly, there is only on-site valet parking. Otherwise, you need to park in the diagonal spaces closest to the beach on Ocean Avenue. All other streets have a parking ban that goes into effect at 3am. Once again, this was fine for April but I don't know how easy it would be in July or August.

Overall, we had a great time because we were there for a wedding but I wouldn't rate the hotel as better than an average.

The Breakers on the Ocean in Spring Lake New Jersey is a ideal location and the Hotel knows it! If you are willing to shell out big bucks you can get a large room or suite with an ocean view.

I did this, I paid $327.00 for a full ocean view room with a sitting area. The room was very nice.

Other members in our party picked rooms cost around $175.00 per night and got a room with a view of someone's dumpster over the dance hall. The room was very small and not well kept and loud.

If you book this hotel beware that the entire staff knows that the rooms will be rented and have a take it or leave it attitude.

Also be aware that the hotels restaurant, bar etc., are almost always use for wedding, etc.,

I was there and could not get a drink at the bar, use the lobby lounge or get a meal unless I wanted these things at very odd times-no vacation on this point.

I understand that there is a very nice B & B right next store that would be much better.

The Breakers on the Ocean

Mar 31, 2008

Stayed at The Breakers in March when they offer a one night full price/second night half off package and found this to be the only reasonable way to stay there. Because of their location (right across the street from the beach), they obviously don't worry about price. They also don't really worry about customer service as we were sent to the wrong room upon arrival; a mistake that might have made sense if they were swamped, but there seemed to be very few guests when we arrived. Then after a perfunctory apology, we were sent to the correct room.
Good points:
Great view of the ocean-windows were clean and oversized.
Clean room, comfortable bed.

Bad points:
Service is blase- They don't seem to care if you go there or not; from initial phone contact through checkout, No one even asked "How was your stay?"

Remember those windows- They had screens on them that don't fit correctly.
Bathroom needs cosmetic attention (grout coming out of tiles, toilet loose.)
Television is antiquated and cable service is limited.
Fireplace functions with a weak flame. Heat of room is unbearable. Even when shut off room remains hot.
No off-street parking- Not a problem in March, but good luck during the summer.

The Bottom line is they know they have a great location and people will go anyway and the sad thing is they are right.

“Wonderful stay at the Breakers!!!!”

The Breakers on the Ocean

Mar 16, 2008

After much researching I found the Breakers Hotel and asked people on Trip Advisor for some info on the place. I got mixed reviews, some saying don't go the word around town is that the place is a dump..and I was scared. I also received an email saying the place was great. After a very needed get away, I have to say this place is GREAT. We stayed in the tower suite, which is the best room in the hotel. It was clean, modern and the view was wonderful. With the windows open we could feel the breeze and smell the ocean. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and they took care of us wonderfully all weekend. Including the room service staff!!! There were parties in the banquet hall on both Friday and Saturday night, so as far as the town thinking the place is a dump, I really do not agree. I must say the people in town were not too friendly, but you get that in most places when your out of towners. The Veranda resturant was great too. We ate breakfast and lunch there. My husband and I have stayed at many four star hotels and bed & breakfast, and I must tell you we enjoyed our stay at this hotel very much. White glove clean room, excellent view, wonderful extra large jacuzzi tub, ultra large room with king size bed, wonderful service, good food...now thats a get away!!!!!

“Wedding at The Breakers”

The Breakers on the Ocean

On January 12th of 2008, we were married at The Breakers. We were a bit anxious since some of the reviews on this site were not favorable. I arrived the night before the wedding and I was upgraded to the deluxe suite. The room is beautiful and contains a gas fireplace, a beautifully renovated marble bath, and a whirlpool for two! It was a wonderfully romantic room and seemed especially inviting in the off season when the the view out of the windows revealed a beach that was virtually deserted! The temperature of the room was not well regulated, however, and it is necessary to fiddle between the thermostat and the windows to get an ideal climate.

The wedding itself was beautifully done and everything that was promised was delvered. We ran into two small hitches during the reception, but the errors were fixed immediately, and no one would have had any idea that something was amiss. I received a number of compliments on the food. We offered a selection of prime rib, salmon and chicken marsala. The portions were the biggest I have seen for a wedding meal, and all were hot, prepared as requested , and accompanied by perfectly prepared side dishes.
While I did not taste the hors d'ouevres, a number of people commented that they were both plentiful and tasty. The only complaint I had from three or four people was with regard to the bartender who was responsible for our event. It was evident that he was upset that not enough people were leaving him tips, and while I understand that tips are important, invited guests to a wedding should not feel obligated, especially not by comments made by the bartender while they are ordering!
All-in-all, I would recommend The Breakers for an event. The quality of the catering, and the staff, absent the negative comments regarding the bartender, were well worth the price we paid. One small hint I can provide: Use the vendors recommended by the staff. We found our DJ and our florist that way and both were outstanding. Not only that, they were reasonable and helpful!
