“Nice Hotel, some minor quibbles”

Grandstay Suites La Crosse

Aug 6, 2007

I'll start with the good so no one gets the wrong impression, because I would stay here again and would recommend this hotel. The hotel is up to date and clean, our room was very spacious, especially for the price. The lobby is so nice I almost expected to see a concierge and bell captain, but it's not that genre of hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful, which is not always the case with the older franchise joints, for sure. The location is excellent, continental breakfast was more than adequate. My non-smoking room was a non-smoking room, so that was good.

As I have found most hotels will do, they put me in a handicapped-accessible room with no warning. I don't think you should have to cross-examine the front desk to find out things like this about the room they are going to give you. If anyone has ever gotten such a room, you know the bathroom is very inconvenient for non-handicapped people. For example, there is no room to stand up in the shower due to the wooden benches. Also not much room at the sink to set your shaving kit on. The A/C unit was a bit loud, but since it was built into the wall, it was quiter than most all-in-one units that sit below the window.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Clean, modern, large room at a reasonable price.
    • Disliked — Handicap-accessible bathroom, tiny pool (which my son still loved).

Exceptional suite.....received a government rate...it was worth every penny. Great location. Attentive service. Kitchen is stocked with plates, cups, utensils, etc....Only drawback was....no business center for computer access. Will stay again.

“Nice homely hotel with wide range of amenities at an unbeatable rate”

My girlfriend and I first stayed at this hotel for the entire week of March 13th, 2005 (8 nights) during spring break. This hotel is absolutely fabulous! The hotel is conveniently located in Riverside Park, walking distance from the heart of downtown La Crosse and right next door to the Freighthouse Restaurant; La Crosse's renowned signature steak and sea food restaurant.

We stayed in the 1-bedroom Queen suite. The suite comes fully equipped with the following:

* Spacious suites with sofa-beds
* Dish washer
* Two-line telephones with voice mail and data ports
* 25" TV with DVD and additional 20" TV in the bedroom
* Large business desk
* Hairdryer
* Iron and ironing board
* Fully-equipped Kitchen
* Outdoor kids jungle gym

We also made full use of the included amenities, especially the kitchen. As you can see from the photos, we stock piled the cabinets and cupboards with grocery and made immediate use of the refrigerator. We also used the included chopping board to prepare dinner, which we graciously cooked with the included electric stove. Internet access was included, but you will need to supply your own ethernet cable. Once dinner was over, we utilized the automatic dish washer for a seamless clean-up while we cozied up on the queen bed watching late night television shows on the 2nd television.

My girlfriend and I fully enjoyed our stay at this amazing hotel. The rate was initially $92.00 a night at that time of the year, but since we stayed for 8 nights, we enjoyed a discounted rate at $72.00 a night.

This may be the best hotel available in the greater La Crosse area, especially with the rate we paid. We feel right at home, and once you've stepped foot in the main entrance, you'll be welcomed with a warm homely camaraderie. Great and friendly staff to top it off!

If you plan to stay at this hotel, be sure to bring a few DVDs (or VHS, if you chose a room with a VHS player) so you can enjoy your movies on the 25" TV - that's if you're not out in the park, shopping or eating!

    • Liked — Friendly staff, cleanliness, comfortable room and bedding. The nightly rate was unbeatable for its value.
    • Disliked — Can't think of a single dislike.
    • Tips/Secrets: — Bring some DVDs and make use of the 25" television and DVD player! If you wish to utilize the free internet access, be sure to bring your own CAT5 network cable.

“Wish I could live here!”

First, the location: Perfect! It's at the north end of the riverfront park and walkway, which made for a lovely stroll into downtown along the Mississippi.

The suite was a one-bedroom apartment with a living room and an efficiency kitchen (full-size fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher) w/ dining nook. I note this because so many places are calling their rooms "suites" these days when actually, it's just a regular motel room with a couple extra feet, or a sofa wedged in.

I was in La Crosse to lecture at the university, so even though there was no government rate coming up in the search, I called the hotel directly and they honored the university rate of $62. Which was a fantastic bargain, but I'd have gladly paid $100+ a night for what I got.
