We stayed two nights, before moving to a private residence rental. We were at the farthest point of the resort, rooms 6102, 6103. The hotel was very accommodating regarding inter-connecting rooms, with children. We were suppose to have a deluxe oceanfront room. The room was oceanfront as long as you walked out your patio door and looked over the bushes. There was black mold around the perimeter of the room where the carpet met the baseboards. The beds were comfortable and as we requested, one king, two doubles. The bathrooms were very clean, with very adequate water pressure. The food served by the pool was adequate, expensive as would be expected. If we were staying for a longer period of time, we would choose another hotel. This hotel is conveniently located to Whaler's Village for restaurants and shopping. The concierge service is limited, always a 15 minute wait to ask a simple question.

“A superb resort with just a few faults.”

My Wife and I spent 9 nights at the Sheraton for our Honeymoon of August 2006. Having travelled from London via LA, we were exhausted when we first arrived. Our Bellboy noticed were booked into a room that was a twin, obviously less than ideal for two newlyweds. The hotel could not do anything for us that night and instead chose to move us the following day which we were happy to do. Both rooms we were given were modern, well decorated, extremely comfortable and clean.

The following morning, we experienced our first proper Hawaii experience - breakfast! Breakfast was prepared buffet-style, with a large amount of cereals, fresh fruits, cooked breakfast US and Mexican style, and with waffles or pancakes available. Fresh omelettes or fried eggs were cooked to order. We ate outside in the morning sun overlooking the palm trees in the complex and the ocean in the distance. It was fantastic, and it was the same for every breakfast for the rest of our stay.

The hotel was well located within a group of other hotels. It's possible to walk to many other hotels and restaurants in the area, some of which are very good and some are distinctly average. However, if you fancy staying at the Sheraton, you can order from a limited menu or choose the Buffet where a choice of very good (but not excellent) meals can be chosen for a reasonable price.

If you wish to book one of the sun-loungers on the beach next to the hotel, then you need to do so *before* you arrive. Most tourists from the US know this and ring the hotel to book in advance. There are plenty of sun-loungers by the pool though, and we were able to book a gazebo for a day. There is a waitress service outside, so you can obtain food from the BBQ and beers from the bar without having to move. Marvellous!

The pool at the Sheraton is worthy of a mention. There are large areas of the pool, a deeper area for a little swimming and a children’s area. But the pool is mostly made from a series of small 'channels' that navigate their way around the front of the complex i.e. between pathways, foot-bridges, seating areas and bars. I thought this was really well done and enjoyable for adults and older children. What with this, the small waterfall and hot-tub, and you've got a great way of breaking up the continuous sunbathing/eating/drinking!

Out stay wasn't without problems though. Firstly, our toilet broke and couldn't be used until repaired. It took 3 separate complaints, (the final one to the manager) to get it sorted which took over two days - very poor. Plus, our bathroom suffered from small cockroaches. I complained about this on numerous occasions, and despite pest-controls best efforts, the problem was never resolved. Our final problem was that my Wife's bikini-top was stolen from our ground-floor balcony. When reported, reception staff could not have been less helpful.

One final note: I would recommend car hire if you plan to do any exploring. There are some trips that can be booked through the Concierge, but for ease of getting around even the more local parts of the island, a car is useful.

Overall, we had a great time at the Sheraton. I would have given this hotel the full 5* rating if not for the few problems that we experienced. As it is, the hotel fell a little short of our expectations. True, the hotel is only a 4*, but it's a pricey one and I feel that the hotel should try a little harder to sort out customer's genuine problems. But those problems aside, the great breakfast, superb complex and decent rooms make for a very enjoyable hotel experience.

“Great Honeymoon!”

Sheraton Maui Resort

We chose the Sheraton Maui because our friend had recommended this hotel over the Westin. We were using our SPG points to stay the whole time. As soon as we got there, we politely asked for an upgrade and they placed us into Building 6, room 6308. Our bellman helped us get to the parking lot and helped us bring all our luggage to our room. Not only that, he gave us some great advice on dining and adventures. I thought he was an excellent bellman.

Our room was amazing!! It was a dream come true and if you are on your honeymoon, definetly suggest building 6. We got to see the cliff dive ceremony from our balcony and we got to see all the snorkelers in Black Rock. We had a large Kind size bedroom, with a large shower tub, separate toilet room, and a granite top sink. We had a LCD TV which was a great bonus. If you are travelling with small children, I would recommend the other buildings in the main area, not building 5 or 6. We had to take 2 elevators which we did not mind because we got to see our cute stray cats that said hello to us. By the way, if you are there, please take care of these sweet kitties with some water and food. Not only us, other guests were bringing them water as well. They are very friendly!!

The beach was amazing right in front of the hotel. Other beaches were rocky, however, this was the best beach. Snorkeling at Black rock was the best place. We went on the Teralini throught the Sheraton, which stopped at 2 places to snorkel, however, there were more fish at Black rock. We saw turtles hanging out twice. My husband followed the turle for about 10 minutes and he didnt seem to mind. The teralani cataraman was ok, but owuldnt recommend it. The BBQ lunch was very stingy and not generous at all. The hamburger meat was thinner that a MacDonalds cheeseburger. The crew was friendly. They stopped to see Dolphins and turltes on the way. But for $119 per person, I would not recommend it. Black rock was the best place to snorkel.

We ate at several places, however for breakfast, we recommend the Black rock grill for their breakfast buffet. It is priicey at 25 per person, however, they have a very big selection. Food is very pricey in general in Maui. We went to Roy's for dinner one night and even though it was expensive, we highly recommend it. The service and food was excellent. WE also enjoyed the Aloha Mixed Plate. Very cheap and good! However, we dont recommend Kimo's, China Boat, and Giovanni's.

As far as the road to hana, we did not attempt. We were terrified with the drive up to Julia's banana bread (recommended by the Maui Revealed). The bread was great, but we did not expect anything like that. Do not attempt with kids!! It was a one way road, off a cliff, with no gaurd rails!! We stopped to see the Olivine pools and the blowhole. Great sights to see!

Overall, we recommend this hotel to everyone. The Westin was boring and average, Everything was great, except all the restaurants in the hotel closed early. Also, the maids were extrememly rude. And lastly, the SPG sales people were kind of annoying. They called us 3 times in the room and twice on the cell phone! We just ignored them. Don't fall for the gift thing....its not work postcards for a 20 minute speech. Definetly stop at Costco's and get drinks before going to the hotel. Everything is very pricey!! Have a great stay!

“Beautiful Views!!”

I have been to Maui many times but never stayed at the Sheraton. An impromtu two-night trip with mom, I booked the hotel directly with reservations who gave me a great Kamaa'ina (resident) rate for an ocean view room.

We received a fresh orchid lei upon arrival and although valet parking is something like $15/day (can't really remember), it is free the first day which is great. The view from the room was amazing and the room size was large with two double beds that were very comfortable.

Amenities: Pool was great, there is a gym (didn't use it) and there is a nightly show (cliff diving, torch lighting) and entertainment while having dinner.

Few service negatives: We were missing slippers in our room. Then none of our lamps worked. Then I noticed that there was black mildew all over the shower head. All were fixed with calls to housekeeping but it was annoying that I had to call 3 times for unrelated things.

Food: Restaurant is very expensive and the food is very average. We had prime rib and lobster and although prime rib was good, lobster was a bit overcooked. I sent back french onion soup that was so salty that it was inedible. We were just too tired to leave the property so we chose to eat there.

Snorkeling: It is amazing! Snorkeling just by the rocks, I saw 2 turtles the first day and 3 turtles the 2nd day! It was really great.

I would stay there again but wouldn't eat dinner there - maybe lunch or breakfast.

“Great Stay”

Sheraton Maui Resort

4 of 5 stars

Recently stayed at Sheraton Maui end of June for one week. Resort is large with a long river-like pool, that winds under bridges throughout the property. Rooms aren't overly luxurious (we were in Bldg. 3, where things seemed a bit outddated, but I understand from other reviewers that other buildings have been renovated). The bed/pillows were VERY comfortable (I'm a pillow snob) and the bathroom and room itself was clean. You don't spend a ton of time in the room, so there is no need for it to be huge. Large flat-screen TV was nice, but did not work half the time (no signal). Balcony had a small table and 2 chairs, but we mostly used it to dry swimsuits - were out and about during the day. Only complaint/request on the room is for Queen-size beds versus the standard Double beds they currently have. Spa is under construction right outside our room (literally), but the noise was not terrible and you certainly don't notice it while at the pool/beach.

Found staff to be very friendly and accommodating. Seamless check-in is great - they take you directly from your car to your room. Had a small glitch with our vacation package (some voucher needed that we were never given), but they said they knew we were tired and to head up to our rooms and they would figure it out. Very nice after a long flight from the U.S. Midwest.

Resort activities/pool amenities were nice. Very comfortable pool loungers and palapas scattered throughout area. Also can rent cabanas on beach (for 2 people) or gazebos near pool (for 4 people), although no amenities given with them besides cold water. Resort fee of $20/day included self-park and a number of activities on-site, such as yoga, star gazing, hula lessons and lei-making, etc. Valet is only $5/day and is complimentary your first day. Snorkeling at Black Rock in front of Sheraton is amazing - definitely worth rental fee at scuba shack (can do $8/1 hour or $20/day), but you can also rent long-term from other dive shops as well. They also have on-site scuba clinics for a fee, with a dive at Black Rock afterwards. Had an interest in doing a dive, but time got away.

There is a sidewalk/boardwalk right along the beach that goes all the way down to the Hyatt Regency. About a 5 minute walk is Whaler's Village, a small shopping/eating district. Hula Grill is definitely a good pick for lunch/dinner. Fabulous beach-side location and really good food. Rusty Harpoon, not so much. Did not try Leilani's, but it had decent reviews. Whaler's Village also has a nice food-court for a cheap lunch. Food at the pool was really good, but would not recommend eating at the Black Rock Steak & Seafood restaurant.

All in all, had a good stay at the Sheraton. The location certainly can't be beat - best beach in Maui from what I hear. Rooms were a little run-down (well used and abused), but you're usually out and about anyways. They were clean and serviced timely by hotel staff. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone: families, honeymooners, girls weekend, whatever. FYI, it is about 45 minutes from the hotel by car, so a rental is recommended.
