My wife and I have been visiting Maui and Kauai almost yearly since 1975. It is important to me to find just the right place for our vacation as our time together in Hawaii is always a unique and memorable experience no matter how many times we go there. That is why I spend a great deal of time on the internet searching for the right place to stay each year before we book our vacation plans. It is difficult to wade through all of the listings of rentals as there are so many and some rentals never look as good in person as they appear on the website. It admittedly takes a lot of luck to find a place to stay that looks as good as advertised. That is why these referrals on this website are important in choosing a rental and why I am taking the time to write this reference. I got lucky with my choice of Kahana Reef #317 as everything that was described and promised in the listing was even better than we expected. This one bedroom, one bath condo is on the third floor of a 4 story building literally set back only 30 or less feet from the ocean. There is no beach right in front of the seawall, but there are small beaches on either side of the complex and larger beaches in walking distance. Being an end unit in the building, the privacy and quietness was exceptional. Unlike many other condos in this area I have stayed in, Kahana Reef is set back far enough from Lower Honoapi'ilani Road such that you don't hear the traffic in your bedroom at night- something to consider when you search for a place to stay that most people would not know. The view of Molokai and Lanai is magnificent from the lanai. The unit is a perfect size for a couple, although there is a couch that makes into a bed in the living room should you not mind sharing a bath with your kids or roommates. Everything in the unit has been recently renovated and decorated. Great kitchen and appliances, large and attractive shower and bathroom, comfortable king size bed, and very gracious and friendly owners. The pool and grounds surrounding the pool have tons of lounge chairs which I have found a rarity in other vacation places I have stayed. The amenities made us feel like we were at our own home back in Colorado, minus the snowblower.
I have narrowed my favorite location in Maui over the years to an area in West Maui north of Ka'anapali and south of Kapalua as the trade winds are perfect here and one can avoid the crowds of Ka'anapali and the expense of Kapalua. Kahana Reef #317 is a great value for the rental rate and we are definitely going to book it for next year as soon as we can determine our vacation dates.
