“You need not look any further than this for a fantastic condo on Maui”

Kahana Reef

5 of 5 stars
Colorado Springs, CO
Jun 28, 2008

My wife and I have been visiting Maui and Kauai almost yearly since 1975. It is important to me to find just the right place for our vacation as our time together in Hawaii is always a unique and memorable experience no matter how many times we go there. That is why I spend a great deal of time on the internet searching for the right place to stay each year before we book our vacation plans. It is difficult to wade through all of the listings of rentals as there are so many and some rentals never look as good in person as they appear on the website. It admittedly takes a lot of luck to find a place to stay that looks as good as advertised. That is why these referrals on this website are important in choosing a rental and why I am taking the time to write this reference. I got lucky with my choice of Kahana Reef #317 as everything that was described and promised in the listing was even better than we expected. This one bedroom, one bath condo is on the third floor of a 4 story building literally set back only 30 or less feet from the ocean. There is no beach right in front of the seawall, but there are small beaches on either side of the complex and larger beaches in walking distance. Being an end unit in the building, the privacy and quietness was exceptional. Unlike many other condos in this area I have stayed in, Kahana Reef is set back far enough from Lower Honoapi'ilani Road such that you don't hear the traffic in your bedroom at night- something to consider when you search for a place to stay that most people would not know. The view of Molokai and Lanai is magnificent from the lanai. The unit is a perfect size for a couple, although there is a couch that makes into a bed in the living room should you not mind sharing a bath with your kids or roommates. Everything in the unit has been recently renovated and decorated. Great kitchen and appliances, large and attractive shower and bathroom, comfortable king size bed, and very gracious and friendly owners. The pool and grounds surrounding the pool have tons of lounge chairs which I have found a rarity in other vacation places I have stayed. The amenities made us feel like we were at our own home back in Colorado, minus the snowblower.
I have narrowed my favorite location in Maui over the years to an area in West Maui north of Ka'anapali and south of Kapalua as the trade winds are perfect here and one can avoid the crowds of Ka'anapali and the expense of Kapalua. Kahana Reef #317 is a great value for the rental rate and we are definitely going to book it for next year as soon as we can determine our vacation dates.

“Beautiful view but thats about it......”

Our family stayed here in early April. We loved the view - you could spit in the ocean, you are so close. That was about all to love though. The building itself is run down and borders a seedy neighborhood directly to the north of the complex. We had to listen to residents riding their motorcycles (LOUD dirt bikes) up and down the road during all hours of the day and night. We also had several sketchy looking characters walking through the parking lot around the car. Basically we didnt feel real safe there. THis is not a heavy touristy area as the complex is a mix of apartments with permanent residnents and visitors in condos

THe guest book in our room (201) had an entry from someone staying there that they had been robbed while in the condo and had a purse stolen. We obviously then kept all windows and doors shut and with no a/c it wasnt real comfortable.

Our unit was ok albeit small with no real place to put luggage as the bedroom is very small, with only room for the bed and a night stand with a lamp which is the only lighting in the room.

Very nice updated kitchen with everything you could possibly need to cook full meals if you choose.

Loved the lanai with a table and chairs and a comfortable beach lounge chair. Ate a few meals out here. You have a direct view of the pool and the water.

Great laundry room with new washer and dryers that actually worked well and dried our clothes on the first round. Cheaper than the laundry mat close by.

We booked directly with the the owner who was very nice and helpful offering advice and good tourist tips.

There is NO beach here just a rock wall fronting very murky brown water. There was a small beach to the right of the unit but I didnt see a way to get there and never saw anyone there so I am not sure if the water is gross there too or what?

The Kahana Reef would be an ok choice if you dont mind not having a beach, and keeping doors and windows locked. This would be ok if you are just needing a place to lay your head at night.

“Better than expected”

Our condo had a full size kitchen, living area, bathroom, and bedroom with king bed and fully equipped with everything we would need on the trip. A short walk to a corner store for groceries and we had breakfast on our lanai overlooking the humpback whales go by. It was amazing to see so many whales jumping all day from our own balcony. There is no need to go on a whale tour when you stay at this hotel. Can't wait to go back next year.

“Mahalo Kahana Reef!”

Kahana Reef

5 of 5 stars
Santa Barbara, California
Mar 27, 2008

We stayed in Condo 117. While we were wary of staying on the ground floor due to the reviews that mentioned theft, we found it to be very pleasant and uneventful. Just keep your screen doors locked at all times and you don't have to worry.

We combed the reviews for "good" unit numbers and called ahead, which I think helped. These condos are privately owned, so the availability is based on if the owners have them booked or
are using them themselves. We requested a nice upgraded unit and ended up with 117 (tip: they assign units on the Thursday prior to the week you arrive). Unit 117 was upgraded, gorgeous granite counters, new appliances, bath, tile floor, just wonderful. It was also spotless, and cleaned by the owner's cleaning staff. Everything we needed was there, including boogie boards, extra towels, blender, coffee maker, hair dryer, plasma TV with cable, everything.

We cooked in the whole week because there is a Farmer's Market on Mon-Wed-Fri mornings, and a natural food store just 1.5 miles south of Kahana Reef. You can walk there! The natural food store makes delicious tropical fruit smoothies too. Kahana Reef has 2 barbecues available for grilling.

The view from our patio was breathtaking. You're right on the Ocean, with a seawall about 20 feet from the front of the north building (there are 3 buildings at Kahana Reef; I would recommend the northernmost if you want to avoid the pool area; less foot traffic). The seawall keeps tourists from wandering through from neighboring beaches, which we liked. You face the sunset, and Molokai which looks mystical from there, plus the channel between the 2 islands (miles wide) means WHALE viewing! We were so surprised to see hundreds of jumping humpback whales during our stay, all from our patio! We heard busy whale time is February, but March was unbelievable. We did a whale watch tour to see them up close because there were so many.

here's some other enjoyable activities:

-Do the Pacific Whale foundation whale watch tour. $35 and great.

-Snorkel Cruise to Molokini: On the Prince Kuhio: for $100 a person, we got Breakfast and Lunch on the boat, 2 snorkeling stops, all equipment included. Add on the underwater camera for $40, it is really worth it and unlimited great quality pics! They burn a cd for you on the boat.

-the drive to Hana: we got as far as the Garden of Eden, which was beautiful ($10 a person). That waterfall is accessible by the way: drive past the garden and park at the pullout past the second (white stone) bridge. You can climb down to the stream, go south a bit and you're in the waterfall pond living the hawaiian waterfall fantasy!

-Snorkeling south of Wailea: don't try the "aquarium" spot any more. the locals don't want you there and have placed boulders in front of the lava rock path. Try the park north of the fishbowl instead, it's staffed (no car break-in issues), and we saw amazing fish, plus a barracuda!

Mahalo Kahana Reef!
