“good price, clean, extremely basic room”

Castle Inn

May 8, 2008

I picked the Castle Inn because of Trip Advisor reviews but I guess I have to do some more analysis of the individual comments.

It was very highly rated yet the room couldn't be more basic. It had two queen beds yet there was hardly room to get out of the beds on the wall side and there were only two chairs in the room, and no table. There was a desk but most of it was taken up by a microwave.

Breakfast is offered but its instant coffee, prepackaged danish and an apple and yogurt.

The room was clean, fairly quiet for a city and considering that the walkway is within 2 feet of one of the beds. A very long counter, maybe 7 feet, for the bathroom sink was very nice.

The location isn't the classiest but is fairly convenient to some tourist areas such as the Lombard St and some decent but modest restaurants.

Parking is free.

“Excellent Base”

Castle Inn

May 6, 2008

My partner and I used this as a base to explore SF and found it ideally located, within easy walk of convenience stores, sights, restaurants, bars and the bay where you can catch a beautiful sunset behind the bridge. Accommodation was fine, very clean and well kept, but wouldn't consider it modern compared to the main stream Holiday Inn, Hilton etc. Car parking is very tight, so SUVs and larger saloons may struggle in peak periods. However, the huge selling point with this Inn are the hosts. Follow their advice, recommendations and cautions and you'll not go wrong. We knew exactly where it was safe to go, until what time at night, and were pointed to some fabulous eateries. Highly recommended.

“Castle Inn SF a hidden gem”

Thank you so much!!!

We had a fab time at the Castle Inn, we stayed here 19th April 2008 to 26th April 2008, 6 nights in the suite which was HUGE!!!! then the final night in 2 rooms.

On arrival we had a smooth check in and was given a map and instructions on where NOT to go. Tenderloin area is not really suitable for tourists.

The grab n go breakfast which included, yoghurt, fresh fruit, nutri grain bars, cereal bars, individual pastries, muffins, coffee and OJ was great for a snack 1st thing, particularly loved the fact they were individually wrapped so no worries about other guests dirty hands having touched them.

Our room was located on the 1st floor at the front of the motel and although facing the main road we slept very soundly, maybe due to the amount of walking we did each day. We were surprised at the amount of times the bedding was changed thought we would have the same sheets all week but no! The shower was amazing, really powerful, great if you have thick hair like me.

The location was great, able to walk to almost everywhere we wanted to go. Thanks for the recommendation of Hyde street seafood & raw bar outstanding service and food!! Peter D's across the road offered such a great choice for breakfast and the spicy spuds, yum yum....

We booked 2 tours via the Castle Inn, the San Fran city tour and the Wine Valley tour, EXCELLENT!!! value and EXCELLENT tour, thanks to John & Will from Tower Tours they were fantastic, so full of knowledge and made us all welcome. The enthusiasm they had for making the tour special was incredible seeing they had both been doing these tours for many a year.

Must try the Beach Blanket Babylon show and eat at The stinking rose and Sears in Union Square (Try the French Toast) Scoma's win's hands down for our best meal, my gosh the size of Prawns!

Close by are several bars and places to eat, along with a Walgreens and an Organic market, and Liquor store, so everything you need. Taxi's are easy to come by.

Once again thank you we will be back if in San Fran again, cannot recommend you highly enough for service, and value.

“Good low cost place to stay”

Castle Inn

Four ladies wanting a low cost and safe place to stay while in San Francisco. The Castle Inn was a great choice for us. Loved the free off street parking (fit the full size car just fine) and location. The free continental breakfast (yougert, granola bars, fruit, pasteries) were great to bring back to our room or take and go. Nothing fancy but good and basic. The free hot chocolate at night was appreciated as it gets cold outside at night. We walked -downhill- to Fisherman's Warf and spent the day there and a $10 taxi ride brought us back in the evening. The next day we spent the $11 each and bought an all day pass for the cable car/bus transportation. The pass got us all over town. The cable car stop is 2 blocks away and the bus stop is a block away. The local resturants were reasonably priced and pleasant. The room had a refrigerator and microwave (to heat up leftover resturant food). Liked how the sink was outside of the bathroom, making it easier for the four of us to get ready in the morning. The rooms were clean and quiet (we were on the 3rd floor). The hotel personnel were friendly and helpful. If you are looking to be pampered the pay the extra to stay elsewhere but if you want a clean, basic hotel then stay here. There is too much to see and do in San Francisco to spend time in the hotel room anyway.

“Recommend The Castle Inn”

Castle Inn

4 of 5 stars

We highly recommend The Castle Inn if you are looking for a good, clean, quiet value for money budget motel located on Russian Hill. It is a walk, cable car or bus ride to Fisherman’s Wharf (eat at Scomas, everywhere else seems to be tourist traps) and everywhere else. It is close to public transport with connections that can take you all over SF. We walked a few blocks and then rode buses to Coit Tower, Haight Ashbury, AMC Cinema and the Golden Gate Bridge for instance.

Varsa was very helpful with our Internet booking and Marshall was super friendly and helpful on check-in. He looked after our luggage for us when we arrived early the morning of check-in. Marshall gave us a map and wrote down the places to see (and the areas to avoid). Varsa arranged some very good tours for us.

The hotel is close to many many restaurants that offer delicious and fresh food at reasonable prices, mostly on Polk Street. We stayed a week and ate very well each night in a different establishment.

Also on Polk is a Walgreens drug store (pharmacy/supermarket) and organic markets. Polk hosts a very good value laundry and dry cleaner (turn right from the Castle Inn, cross Polk and turn right, you will find it just up the hill from Broadway).

The rooms are a good size and clean; we had a non-smoking room with a comfortable queen bed. There is some street noise, but not intrusive. We heard footsteps from the room above.

The breakfast is not that good tho: lots of fat, sugar and carbs. We purchased fruit, yogurt and granola from the organic market on Polk (the market has plastic spoons available free of charge, we ate the granola from the cups in the room). The ‘fridge and microwave were very useful.

Marshall can arrange a Town Car transfer. The fare from the airport was $55. You can call the car direct on 415 756 7402, ask for Jun.

We will return to San Francisco and stay at the Castle Inn.
