“Great location, great staff!”

Onyx Hotel - a Kimpton Hotel

5 of 5 stars
San Francisco
May 5, 2008

My mother and I stayed at the Onyx for a long tourist weekend and could not have been happier with the location and the staff. Every person who worked there said hello to us and could not do enough to help us with any and all requests. The room was small but sparkling clean and had nice furnishings and comfortable beds and bedding. I always love the leopard-spotted robes at the Kimpton Hotels.

The shower has good water pressure, unlike showers in most hotels. We were just two blocks from Fanueil Hall and most downtown attractions, and there was a 7-11 and a subway station right around the corner. Getting a cab there was no problem, and we were about 10 minutes from the airport.

The immediate neighborhood isn't much to speak of, but has a couple of decent pubs and a nicer bar down the block. I'd recommend not walking around on Causeway at night by yourself, but other than that, I felt safe the whole time.

Onyx Hotel - a Kimpton Hotel

I booked through the hotels website. They offer a choice of smoking or non-smoking. I chose smoking. At the time of check-in I was notified there is no smoking anywhere in the building. The desk told me that was a special request and that all requests were not guaranteed. I contacted Kimpton(the hotels owners), and they said the same thing-special requests are not guaranteed. I suggested they should change their website and not offer smoking as a choice because it not available. To this day, they still offer a choice of smoking and non-smoking rooms. Very misleading.
Also, when I booked the room, I had to prepay for my stay.(I did that a month in advance). The day I am leaving, they put a copy of the invoice under my door and it was more than I had prepaid. (And they charged the extra to my credit card) I took the bill to the desk and they insisted I was not overcharged. I showed them my copy of the invoice that I had brought from home and they still insisted I was not overcharged even though the charges were clearly higher than what I had prepaid.
Overall, the staff attitude was that they were not very concerned about making the customer happy. The young man at the desk was actually paying attention to something or someone else as I was expaining these problems.

Ms. Carter, thank you for your feedback regarding your recent visit As of January 1st, our hotel is 100% smoke free, as are most public establishments in the state of Massachusetts. Our reservation system allows guests to book at any one of our hotels throughout North America, some of which still allow smoking. This is the reason that the option is still avaialble when reservations are made for the Onyx. We do are very best to honor every request, however, since we are 100% smoke free, we are unable to honor smoking room requests.

Also, i did pull up your reservation and see that we did issue a credit for the difference in room rate that you mentioned at check out.

I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you very much for taking the time to provide feedback.

This was my second stay at the Boston Onyx. They do a great job at maintaining a small boutique hotel. The rooms are not the largest, but that is expected in a large city. The bed was very comfortable. Overall the room was very clean and did not look too worn. One very minor thing was the garbage can had some leftover stuff from a prior guest, probably just a small oversight by housekeeping. If I return to Boston again I would definitely stay again since it is within walking distance to many places in downtown Boston.

My Fiance and I have stayed at the Onyx twice. We went on Valentines of 2007 and were given a room and my fiance had requested roses and champagne and it was wonderfully provided. This year we went during the St. Patty's day weekend. Although the hotel was very busy as many people were coming in and out, the front desk staff was excellent. They were able to hold onto our bags until after the game when we would check into our rooms (we were very early).

The area is very lively-within walking distance of many pubs and restaraunts and even Haymarket and Fennuel Hall. The north end (great italian restaurants) are not too far. Also, there is a dunkin donuts not too far, but its a little sketchy area, but if you need your fix (which we do) its available for a quick stop.

We will always stay at Onyx when we go to Boston because of its proximity to great things, cleanliness, comfortability (the beds are great and comfy) and the staff is very polite. The first time we stayed we think someone played a prank on the staff (eek-it wasn't us) and asked for hangers to be delivered to their room.Well, the staff ended up at our room and was very gracious when we said it wasn't us! Oh well, that happens!!

But otherwise, Excellent!

“Great Service and Location”

Onyx Hotel - a Kimpton Hotel

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at the Onyx Hotel last weekend. The service at the hotel was outstanding from the front desk, concierge, bartenders, etc.

Checking in, we were greeted by the friendly front desk staff. They informed us that our room was ready and we would be located on the 9th floor. Once we arrived at our room we were greeted with a glass of green m&m's (it was st. patrick's day weekend). We were also provided with a note stating that our requests for champagne flutes and newspapers were made. We were also happy to see a complimentary bottle of wine, nice touch. The rooms are not large but comfortable enough for 2 people. The mini bar was fully stocked with beverages and snacks. FYI, bring your own bottled water if you don't feel like paying $4-5 a bottle. They also provide AVEDA products shampoo, conditioner and lotion ( ladies will appreciate that)

The Ruby Room restaurant/bar was a great place to unwind. Again not a huge place but suffiecient enough. We had the breakfast buffet there one morning. It was $13 p/p plus auto 18% gratuity. There were probably cheaper places for breakfast in the area, but it was snowing and we did not feel like venturing out that early. We also had the handcut russet potato chips with blue cheese (delicious) and some cocktails before dinner one night. They offer a complimentary beer/wine hour with cheese and crackers nightly. This was great and a chance to sample some different wines and talk with some interesting people staying at the hotel. It runs from 5-6 p.m.

The location of the hotel is perfect if you are going to see an event at the TD Banknorth. We had Celtics tickets and were able to walk to and from with no problem. We also had dinner in the North End which was walking distance.

Can't say enough good things about the Onyx and its helpful staff. We can't wait to return. If there was one negative thing to write, it would probably be about the fitness facility. It was really tiny. The equipment was pretty new but, it was just small with a couple of treadmills and some free weights.

I would reccommend the Onyx for a great stay in Boston.
