“Clean, Modern, Great!”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

One of the nicest Marriotts I've ever stayed at, and I've been to a few dozen. Everything seemed pretty new. The room was clean, fresh, and very pleasant. The bed was standard Marriott plushness. The TV worked fine (although it was a standard flat-screen CRT, not an LCD). The bathroom was well-stocked and water pressure was pretty good on the 16th floor.

Two caveats: One, there's no mini-fridge in the room. This was kind of annoying since we had a few of our own bottles of water and it was like 95 degrees out that weekend. And two, hallway noise seemed a little louder than usual for a Marriott. We could hear quite a bit of activity whenever people would walk back and forth.

The front desk staff were very nice (Kirby was pretty cool). The only issue was that when we arrived at 5pm, there was only one front desk clerk and like 4 or 5 people backed up in line. We waited for about five minutes but then 2 additional front desk staff showed up and we got checked in quickly. But where were those 2 staffers for the first five minutes?

The location, also, is excellent. You can actually SEE the infield at Petco from the rooftop bar. But be aware that the streets will get a little crowded if you visit during a home game. And the Gaslamp Quarter is right around the corner with a TON of bars and restaurants.

If we ever returned to the area, I'd probably stay at the Marriott again.

“Good hotel for the convention center”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

As usual, the trip to San Diego was for a convention, and this Marriott is in a good location for the convention center - albeit not next door like the original Marriott. It was clean and quiet, and the staff were all polite. Check in and check out were quick. The rooftop bar gets alot of use - mainly by young locals, it seems - but that did not disturb me. I would recommend this hotel to conventioneers and others visiting downtown San Diego.

“Modern yet very comfy”

Fantastic hotel - and I'm usually a little picky. When I walked into the ultra modern and chic lobby I thought the rooms would be very modern but many times that means small in a downtown hotel. I was wrong, I was very impressed with the space in our room. We had 2 double beds. I found the beds very comfortable.

The staff is some of the friendliest I've every been around, actaully we were impressed with the friendly atmosphere of the whole city! Parking was expensive, as in any big downtown city, so we expected that. I would absolutely stay back here if I got back to SD.

“terrific with a hiccup”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

Nanuet, New York

Just a great locale in the heart of the Ballpark and Gas Lamp district. Steps from Petco field and just 2 blocks from the harbor side entry into the Gas Lamp district. The front desk staff were great. Full of enthusiasm and cheerfully responding to any need. The hotel is modern and the beds were fabulous. Our room overlooked the ballpark with great city views. The room itself was well maintained and the bath spotless with handome tiles. We had breakfast delivered daily to our room - it was very timely and very large servings provided. Drinks on the rooftop bar are expensive but in line with any other hotel bar prices. The restaurant has a limited menu but is very nicely situated off the hotel lobby. The sidewalk bar was okay but we found the service a bit off. The concierge in the lobby was nowhere to be found however the front desk and bell staff were able to answer any question we had. The only downside we found was with the maid service. They serviced the room as expected during the day however we had to consistently call down to the front desk during our stay to request replenishment of bathsoap, mouthwash, even toilet paper. The maid staff somehow never replaced anything? We've travelled everywhere and never experienced anything like this oversight!

“A couple of negatives”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

2 of 5 stars
New York

Overall a nice downtown hotel - nothing special - but a good location for walking around. But there were two big negatives for me. First of all, my room had some kind of frosted cover on the window. Now, I'm sure it was put on the window to conceal the terrible view if a rooftop and building. But I could not see outside at all - not even to see what the weather was. I would have preferred the bad view. Secondly, and more important to me, is that they do not put clean glasses and cups in the rooms. After seeing a news story that some hotels do not put clean glasses and cups in the rooms to replace the dirty, used ones - and being a little grossed out by this- I marked the bottom of my cup and glass to see if they would be replaced. Much to my dismay, when I returned to the room after housekeeping had cleaned it, the same cup and glass, with the marks still on the bottom, were there - rinsed but not replaced. I went to the next room where housekeeping was cleaning the room, to ask if I could get clean ones, and I saw on the housekeeping cart that there were NO clean cups or glasses!! And I could see the housekeeper in that bathroom, rinsing the glasses out and drying them with the bathroom towel, and putting them right back on the counter! Bad enough when a cup that I used is not washed properly and replaced, but being there were no clean ones on the cart, I can only assume that they are not replaced even when the room changes guests! This was not acceptable to me at all!!
