“Grand old hotel”

Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue

5 of 5 stars
South Windsor, CT
Nov 7, 2007

Staying at the Park Hyatt made me feel like I had taken a step back in time. It is a grand hotel, with very interesting architectural features, conveniently located in Philadelphia's theater district. The room that I stayed in was very nicely decorated and comfortable. I would stay here again in a heartbeat if my travels take me back to Philadelphia!

“Better Than I Expected”

Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue

4 of 5 stars
Orange County, CA
Oct 25, 2007

My stay was better than expected. It was unusual that check-in is on the top floor, but it didn’t bother me (although the wait for the elevator can be a bit slow). I agree with one reviewer who commented that the hotel was a little confused on their design. The top floor (as pictured on their website) has a very nice contemporary feel – a really good first impression. However, when I arrived on the 14th floor where my room was located, it felt like Gumby’s grandma was hired to design it. Whoever chose this designer must have owed someone a HUGE favor because I have never seen lime green in that quantity. I would not have mentioned the décor if I was at some cheap hotel in Vegas but I think it was strangely (and noticeably) out of place here.

Despite that, the room met expectation, given the location. For the most part, it was clean and the bed was comfortable. If you look a little closer, you can definitely spot some noticeable wear and tear, but nothing that really bothered me. There were some perks that made the stay more comfortable – a loofah scrub for the shower, disposable slippers and complimentary bottled water just to name a few.

Outside the room, all the staff I spoke with were all pleasant and helpful. I had dinner (once) and breakfast (twice) at the restaurant XIX and found the food excellent each time. I would definitely eat there again.

The location of the hotel is excellent – 5-10 minutes walking distance from the Walnut Street entrance: Rittenhouse Square to the left, the Historical District to the right, the Theater District just down Broad street and the Convention Center up the street. I encourage using a taxi instead of renting a car as it looked like parking is a premium (I think I saw a sign at a parking lot that said $3.25 for every 20 minutes).

One important thing: If you are a light sleeper and not used to the “city sounds” I recommend bringing ear plugs. The three days I spent there I could barely sleep a wink because I was constantly woken up by the sounds of sirens below (there’s a hospital nearby). On the second night, I was woken up by what I think was street cleaning around 4 or 5 in the morning. It sounded like an alarm clock beeping for what felt like half an hour.

I wouldn’t mind staying here again if I was on business (i.e. company pays). It’s a little pricey for what you get.

“Impressive older hotel”

Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue

Oct 5, 2007
1/1 found this review helpful

My wife and I stayed 3 nights at the Park Hyatt Bellevue in late July for a business conference. The overall experience was above average but I question whether the hotel rates a "5 star" as indicated.

I disagree with one reviewer who said it was easy to find - the entrance for the hotel is not well-marked and is actually on a side street. The hotel is unique in that the lobby is on an upper floor with only a small entry area on floor level. The lobby is also small but I found this appealing.

The real strength of the hotel is its excellent customer service. The staff is friendly and does an impressive job such as actually remembering your names. The check-in clerk walked us to the elevator and highlighted aspects of the hotel- a nice touch. Later we asked about seeing a suite and were personally shown two suites with no pressure. The room service was very timely and the housekeeping was excellent. The concierge always provided helpful advice.

The other positive about the hotel is the older architecture which is most noteworthy in the rooms. Some will like this, others won't. Travelers who like modern hotels should stay at another place. I thought the room had character and our room had been well maintained.

I liked that the business center provided free internet access. The hotel obviously has a great downtown location and we felt the price was reasonable for the low 200's per night.

The negatives were a fairly slow elevator and I did not like having to share the exercise facility with half of downtown Philly as the facility is actually open to the public.

“I liked it”

Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue

4 of 5 stars
Stirling, New Jersey
Sep 2, 2007

Everyone who works there is polite and helpful. The room I stayed in was old, but beautiful, nicely maintained and well-furnished. The bathroom was modern and luxurious. I agree with other reviewers that the facility is a bit odd, with the check-in desk on the 19th floor, but so what. There really isn't a traditional hotel lobby here, but the doormen and concierge (in the lobby) were very friendly, kind and helpful. The restaurant, bar and breakfast areas on the 19th floor were superb. I cannot understand the complaints of another reviewer about the seating at the breakfast/lunch area; I thought it was one of the best such areas of the many hotels at which I've stayed. The staff there all served me promptly and politely. The decor in the hallways is a bit overdone, but at least it's not the cookie-cutter industrial look of so many Marriotts, Hyatts, and Hiltons. There are plenty of good hotels within easy walking distance of each other in the heart of Philadelphia. Check prices and book accordingly. All these big hotels in the heart of Philly aren't really all that different. I got a great deal there thanks to AmEx Platinum.

“A bad hodgepodge of design and fire alarm issues”

Park Hyatt Philadelphia at the Bellevue

3 of 5 stars
Baltimore
Aug 21, 2007

We arrived at the Park Hyatt on Saturday for a quick one nigh stay. First off the Park Hyatt has a great location at the corner of Broad and Walnut Street. The hotel is easy to find but the entrance is located on a side street/alley and not on either Broad or Walnut. You walk into a lower lobby but need to take the elevator up to the 19th floor to the reception area.

The reception/lobby/restaurant area you enter when exiting the elevator is beautiful. The overall decor is very modern but tastefully done like most Park Hyatts. We checked-in without any problems and were upgraded to a Park Deluxe (I am a Hyatt Diamond member) for our one night stay. The room was located on the 14th floor so you have to take an elevator down to the rooms. When the elevator door opened on the 14th floor I thought we had landed in a different world. The decor of the hallways was awful! Think grandma's retirement community!! The wallpaper was teal with gold accents and the carpeting was a horrible blue pattern. The room itself was also very "old world" and not modern at all. I wasn't expecting a new modern Park Hyatt room but the room we had was not even close to the pictures shown on the Hyatt website. The wallpaper was white with green, blue, gold and brown patterns. The room was very large so we didn't get too bothered by the decor since we were only there for one night. I just can't understand that the rooms have not been updated to match the decor of the lobby area. What a hodgepodge of colors and designs!

Didn't get a very good nights sleep due to noise in the hallway and a fire alarm at 4:30am. The fire alarm announcement continued for over 30 minutes before they finally announced that it was a false alarm. I stay at a lot of hotels and a fire alarm seems to be fairly common today but it really shouldn't take over 30 minutes to deactivate the alarm!!

To summarize...hotel rooms need to be updated to fit in with the lobby area and the Park Hyatt vibe. The location however can't be beat! We did not have any issues with the service provided by the staff as others had mentioned. We actually thought the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.
