“Lovely hotel and wonderful service but skip the spa.”

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia

My husband and I stayed at this property over Easter weekend 2007. The service was terrific throughout -- exactly what you would expect from a Four Seasons. The hotel was booked solid and yet every staff member addressed us by name and took the time to answer questions no matter how mundane.

The food was superb both through room service and in the main hotels. In fact, we never left the hotel for a meal! Even high tea was a nice treat and very relaxing.

The location is wonderful and most rooms have a scenic view. The beds are ultra comfortable and cleaning staff keeps them immaculate. We had a small suite and the extra room was a welcome addition! The bathroom amenities are standard for a Four Seasons -- made by L'Occatine.

If I had one complaint it would be the spa area and fitness center. Both were obviously retro-fit into the hotel. In order to use the fitness center you walk through the spa and vice versa. The fitness equipment runs the length of the hall leading to the ladies locker room which is a little odd. And the treatment rooms are dated and small. As in the therapist is pushing against the massage table to navigate around the room. Also, skip the stone massage until they are better trained at this new treatment. My back ached for days and that was after asking him to use a lighter touch.

In short, this hotel is always a pleasure to visit and continues to improve with age!

We stayed at the Four Seasons in Philly Friday and Saturday before Easter specifically to see the King Tut exhibit at the Franklin Institute. If this is what you are after, the location could not be better. Museum is right around the corner and this hotel is definitely the most high end in the immediate area. I booked very early and by chance say their Philly Overnight Package online. One night free..how perfect is that? Well, I called the hotel directly as the website was not working well and they told me that they no longer participate in that promotion. I told them that it was on their website through a certain date and they were really obligated to accept my reservation with that promotion. They said no. I called their central reservations and they took and confirmed my reservation on the spot. I booked a Deluxe Room with two double beds for $401 with the second night complimentary. This included parking so I was pretty thrilled. I purchased the King Tut tickets separately even through the hotel offers a package with exhibit tickets...it was still much cheaper this way. As the date came closer I called the hotel directly just to re-confirm beause of the initial confusion and I did not want any surprises upon my arrival. They, of course, were charging me $401.00 per night...disregarding the package. I spoke to central reservations again and they took care of it and sent me email confirmation which I printed out and took with me for check in. Upon check in they did have the correct package rate but then I noticed they had booked not a deluxe room as reserved but the moderate room. I brought this to their attention and the gentleman at the check in counter did not know what to do and disappeared for around 10 minutes. I was not optimistic at this point. The manager then appeared and said they did not have any more rooms with two double beds and he would give me two connecting rooms each with a king bed for the exact same price which was perfect for my two kids. They sent up dessert for the kids that night too. So it all worked out and I got the bargain of a lifetime...with tax under $500 for two rooms for two nights! I did not even care about the hotel at that point...it was standard Four Seasons. Had I paid full price I may have been a bit disappointed. Service was fine although not the friendliest around...particularly in the spa/pool area. Beautiful small spa with gym and tea/fruit/water available at all times. GReat huge hot tub and nice pool. Lots of kids this weekend. Rooms were nice and clean with comfortable beds. Bathrooms were standard but had wonderful L"occitane bath products and two robes in each bathroom which was also a nice touch. Had room service breakfast once...nothing special, very basic. It was quite cold for this time of year and they set up vats of hot cider in the lobby which was a lovely touch. Would we stay there again? Maybe if I had to go to Philly or something or back to the Franklin Institute but I really don't think it is a destination hotel. All in all, though...can not complain. Always check their central website for specials prior to booking...we sure got lucky.

“Bliss!”

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia

I have stayed at this property several times but my last visit was New Years Eve with my girlfriend for 4 nights in the executive suite. While it's not the nicest four seasons I have ever stayed in it is absolutely one of the most comfortable. I always feel if I am returning home when I walk in the doors. Like any four seasons the staff will meet any request effeciently and promptly. I had called the concierge a week prior to my visit with some requests. When I walked into my room the bed was already made with the 2 extra down blankets I requested (My girlfriend is always cold!) and a beautiful vase of roses was put out on the livingroom table. We returned to the hotel close to 4a.m after a NYE party and there were rose pedals on the bed and a great bottle of champagne on ice. We truly had a remarkable stay, we even extended it one more night because we did not want to leave. Bar downstairs was pleasant and even agreed to stay open after closing to allow us to have a bite to eat infront of the fireplace. Its always a pleasure to stay at the 4 seasons philly! If you are on a budget, this is not the hotel for you!

“Not Quite Five Stars”

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia

This is a very good hotel, but it doesn't quite live up to the AAA Five Diamond rating plaques they prominently display at the entrance. For instance, we ended up waiting for two hours for our room because of "housekeeping" even though we were told it would be less than an hour and numerous other guests were being checked into their rooms. When we finally got to the room, there was popcorn in a chair, somebody else's cup of soda in the mini-bar refrigerator and soap stains on the bathroom sink counter. When we checked out, the doorman loaded somebody else's luggage in the back of our car, something we didn't discover until we got home. Nobody's perfect, but these sorts of slip-ups shouldn't happen at a Four Seasons, particulalry one rated as highly as this hotel.

Like Goldilocks, I have been searching for a hotel chain that is just right--the perfect combination of value and luxury. The Four Seaons is not that hotel chain (at least for me). I am at a loss to explain the $200 a night premium one pays for the Four Seasons compared to other top hotels in the area. Trip Advisor reviews of this Four Seasons and others all say somthing like: "It costs more, but it's a Four Seasons so it's okay." That makes no sense to me--I want to see where my extra cash is going and derive a benefit therefrom.

My stay at the Four Seasons Philadelphia was unremarkable. The room was nice, but that's it. Nothing about it was particularly noteworthy or memorable. The bathroom had marble tile and the furniture was of decent quality, but other hotels have marble bathrooms and good quality furniture.

From a design point of view, the hotel has a strange layout. The hotel spans the length of an entire city block. The elevators are at one end. If you have a room in the back, you essentially have to walk a whole block to get there.

My first night there I ordered room service. Three hours later I was up with a mild case of food poisoning. I called the front desk; the clerk did show an appropriate level of concern and had the food services director call me the next day. She sent me some get well chocolates, which was a nice gesture, but I was surprised to see the room service charge remain on the bill when I checked out.

As other reviewers have noted that internet access costs $10/day, which is amazing considering even the Embassy Suites across the street has free access.
