I don’t understand what all the fuss is about.
When visiting Philly recently, I was very much looking forward to trying the vaunted “Philly Cheese Steak.” I’d done my research, learned that Pat’s and Geno’s – across the street from each other in south Philly – were considered the two “contenders.” I’d brushed up on the correct way to order [type of sandwich first – steak, pepper steak, whatever; type of cheese – provolone, cheddar, cheese whiz (the traditional, I’m told); then “wit” or “wit-out” grilled onions], and learned to have my cash ready. Mid-afternoon, I made my way through the narrow streets to the area.
I chose Pat’s essentially because it’s the first one I came to. I ordered a “steak, provolone, wit-out”, paid, and grabbed my sandwich. It really was almost that quick – they have that part down to a science – and the sandwich was easily big enough for two to share. I grabbed a few cherry peppers from the condiment table and sat down at one of the tables, set for a gastronomic experience.
Boy, was I disappointed.
I’d prepared myself for a juicy (read: greasy) sandwich, piping hot and full of flavor. What I got was a sandwich full of tender beef that could almost have been described as dry. In addition, it wasn’t hot enough to melt the provolone. Most of the flavor, I’m sorry to say, came from the peppers and the cheese.
Next time, I may try Geno’s just to compare and contrast, but I’m not in any hurry. Next time I’m in the mood for a hot, flavorful steak sandwich, I’ll go to my local food court and get one from the Steak Escape. It’s not as colorful or (perhaps) as authentic as a trip to south Philly but, in my estimation, it’s a far better sandwich.
