“Maybe we had a renovated room?”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

Oct 1, 2007

I'm guessing we had a renovated room, because we did not have the problems that I read in the other reviews here. We thought the lobby was very fancy. Our room was small (even though it was called a "large room"), but it was very nice. It had nice comfy beds, and was definitely newly painted. The room itself was very clean. There were no problems that I noticed with the room at all.

The hotel was still undergoing renovations. We saw some areas blocked off with tape, but it didn't bother us (we also had a room right by the elevator, so didn't have to walk down many halls). We did have a problem when we arrived that the electronic keycards were all broken, so you had to have an escort to your room each time. They didn't check our i.d., which made me wonder a bit about security.

The one part of the hotel that was still gross was the garage. The garage looked like a dump. There were dirty old sofas and stained mattresses laying all over the place, and it smelled horribly. We could hardly breathe down there. I don't know why they just had them piled up down there. They also stored the garbage in a sloppy manner right outside some of the rooms by the alley. We didn't have a room with that view, but it sure wouldn't be nice to have the "garbage view".

All in all, it looks like the Inn is improving. The staff were very nice, and hopefully they can finish cleaning this place up.

“Run! Run Fast!”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

1 of 5 stars
San Francisco
Sep 20, 2007

It took me 9 months to write this review. I stayed at this crappy hotel in January, 2007 because I was taking classes at Hopkins. The lobby belies what the guest rooms truly are. I thought I was at Motel 8 when I first walked into the first room I was assigned to. It was dark, grungy, and the bathroom had a shower stall that needed MAJOR repair and updating. I asked for a change of room because the curtains had a stench of old tobacco smoke, even though it was a non-smoking room. My next room was a tad better, brighter and cleaner, although I had to put up with a toilet with a leaky flush, peeling wallpaper, and dangerous half-hanging electrical wall sockets. I didn't change to another room because I was afraid what I might be assigned to next. I swear, it was like playing russian roulette! The front dest staff could sometime be friendly and helpful, but only if there was a manager in the vacinity. It is shameful that this property is part of the Hilton family. I had submitted a complaint to the Hilton Corporation in 2/07. It is now 9/07 and I am still waiting for a response.

“Overpriced pile of dirt”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

Aug 11, 2007
1/1 found this review helpful

I was misled by a nicely appointed entrance and front desk area, but once I stepped off the elevator onto my floor, it all went downhill- total, disgusting disaster!

I had to walk through long unkempt (dirty, messed up carpets and walls) hallways- half the hotel was undergoing renovations and these areas were open to the public rather than partitioned off.

I was greeted with a waft of the odor of cigarette smoke upon arriving at my room. Not only was my room supposed to be non-smoking, but it's a non-smoking hotel.

I asked to speak with someone about a price adjustment as the conditions in the room were less than savory. I was told that because I had made an advance purchase online, the hotel had not yet received the money from the outside vendor that handles their advanced online sales (Please note- I made my reservations directly on the hotel website, NOT Travelocity or a similar site). They claimed that since the hotel did not receive their payment, they could not work with me on the exhorbitant price I paid for a room that reeked of smoke.

I asked to speak with a manager- they were able to find a supevisor for me, who said they will try to get in touch with their outside vendor regarding payment to see if they could then work with me on the price.

I was told that someone would get in touch with me the next morning. No one contacted me and no one addressed my request.

Entering the bathroom, I noticed a Q-tip on the floor. I gave them the benefit of the doubt- perhaps it had fallen out of my own bag. However, when I looked in the shower and found used bottles of shampoo in there, I knew the bathroom had not be cleaned. Housekeeping did visit after my call, after about a half hour wait.

When visiting the restaurant, I asked if I could order something for "takeout"- after spending so much on a room that missed the mark, I did not want to spend extra for room service. I was told that they do not do that.

I went back to the front desk to inquire about why this was so- it turned out to be a misunderstanding- the waitress thought I wanted to order from the room service menu and not have it delivered to my room. However, I was surprised that after expressing my disappointment in the room's conditions, the hotel staff did not offer my measly $6 salad "on the house".

The hotel was very noisy too- their air conditioning systems and some type of fan was very loud, noisy and disruptive.

The room rate was astronomical, particularly given the fact that it was not up to par. I could have flown halfway across the country for the same price!!

The staff, I do have to say, was very nice, and seemed to want to accommodate me but given the hotel policy, they could not. This policy is horrid and there is no reason why they couldn't have shaved some money off my bill, given the unsatisfactory conditions.

I was also shocked that I was, in essence, penalized for paying in advance. I should have been accommodated all the more, not less!!

I was thoroughly disappointed in this hotel- very dusty and dirty room! Very overpriced! Would never go back!!!

“Stay Elsewhere When in Baltimore, Expected More from a Hilton Hotel”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

Aug 6, 2007

Recent stay at this hotel was very disappointing. The hotel is rundown, and should not be accepting guests. Renovation is going on, and the property should be closed during this time. At the very least, Hilton should state the condition of this property for those considering making reservations. The room was dingy, worn and had a damp, moldy smell. The bathroom had mold and very old fixtures, leaky faucet and very noisy shower. The wallpaper is peeling and towel rack was broken, so towels had fallen to the floor. The air conditioning was noisy.
There was much confusion about the parking rate, even though I had a printout of my confirmation stating a parking rate. The reason I was given for the confusion: the garage operation had been recently been taken over by a new company and I would need to speak with them about honoring the rate. They were no longer handling that at the front desk. Of course, when I spoke to someone at the garage desk, he directed me back to the front desk. In all, it took four people to decide on the rate, and then was only resolved when I refused to pay more than my confirmation stated. Quite rude response from the last person, who very SLOWLY processed the payment so I could finally leave that place.
The only thing this property has going for it is the proximity to Johns Hopkins campus. Not enough reason to stay there.

“convenient to JHU, not that great otherwise”

Doubletree Inn at The Colonnade

2 of 5 stars
Bay Area, CA
Jul 27, 2007

I stayed at the Colonnade with my family because my brother was graduating from JHU. For our purposes, it was nice because it was so convenient to the campus, but it was way, way overpriced during graduation week, and the rooms weren't even that large and/or that nice.

My card key malfunctioned pretty much every time I tried to use it, so I got pretty well acquainted with a lot of the front desk staff since I had to get my key reprogrammed so often.

The breakfast buffet was similarly overpriced and not that great. After the first day, we ate at nearby restaurants instead. Brasserie Tatin is a few blocks away and is excellent.
