“Not what we expected”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

Jun 1, 2008

We booked this hotel on priceline and got a good rate ($79).I would not pay any more than that for this hotel. The lobby of the hotel is fairly nice, but the room felt outdated and dingy, and was next to the elevator. When we asked to move we were told that our rate was only for a queen bed room next to the elevator; this was the first we heard of this. The desk staff was not knowledgeable about the area and was unable to assist us with anything more than basic directions to the Inner Harbor area. Some of the doormen tried to help but were not much more knowledgable. The bathroom was a disappointment as well; small and not updated at all. We were told that there was wireless internet in the lobby and deli area but were unable to connect, and there was noone to assist with this either. In addition, the area in which the hotel was located did not feel very safe; we learned on our last morning there that someone was stabbed 2 blocks from the hotel the night before.

I am certainly disappointed to read your comments about the Tremont Plaza. Many of your comments go very much against the tide of comments we've received throughout the spring and summer about how strong our guest service skills are. As far as the room type you booked, the rooms reserved on websites such as Priceline and Hotwire are Studio Suites with 1 Queen Bed. The location can be anywhere between the 6th and 37th floor, and those third-party sites do not promise guests any special requests. The Front Desk staff works hard to ensure that every request can be met, but your stay coincided with the Red Sox' only 2008 weekend visit to Camden Yards, and we were sold out and therefore limited in flexibility.

I personally tested all of our Bellstaff and Front Desk staff this week after reading your comments, and all know far more about downtown Baltimore restaurants, attractions, and directions than I would have expected. Would you mind sharing more details about your experience with me offline? I would like to know what staff members were unable to provide the routine assistance you describe in your review.

As far as the condition of the guestroom and bathroom, as mentioned previously on TripAdvisor, we are planning a multi-million dollar renovation for the end of 2008 into 2009 to address these concerns.

“Loved it!”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

May 26, 2008

The front desk clerk transfered my reservation from Tremont Park to the Plaza at the same rate I had even though the Plaza rate is higher.
Nice bright clean room, updated decor. My room was very quiet even though it was next to the elevator; I didn't hear a thing. I always request to be far away from elevators and ice machines because I hear everything, not this time.

Thank you for the glowing comments! Regarding the quiet nature of the rooms despite being near the elevators, there's 2 important factors: as an all-suites hotel, our rooms are spacious and therefore the sleeping areas are set back so that outside noise including elevators cannot be easily heard; and as a high-rise, 37-story building, we feature only 9 or 10 rooms on each guest floor, so there's simply not that much hallway traffic. That means guests are not subjected to guest or employee conversations that typically can be heard at the elevator banks of most hotels.

We look forward to taking great care of you next time you travel to Baltimore!

“Good hotel but overpriced”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

May 20, 2008

I stayed here for a friend's batchlor party. The hotel staff is friendly, but the hotel itself is nothing special and is very dated. My suite had a refridgerator and microwave, but the room was average. The bed is comfortable. Hotels guests have to pay for parking. It was very overpriced for what I got in my opinion.

Thank you for writing a review about the Tremont Plaza. Our management team certainly agrees that the hotel rooms need an update, and the great news is that our hotel room renovation will begin near the end of 2008 and will continue into the first quarter of 2009.

As far as the price paid, your dates of travel were during the third weekend of May, which is Preakness Weekend in Baltimore (the Preakness is the second leg of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown). That weekend is traditionally the busiest of the year in Baltimore, and features much higher rates than typical weekends.

Regarding parking charges, unfortunately every hotel in downtown Baltimore charges parking fees, typically in a range from $20-$35 per night. At the Tremont Plaza, guests can self-park in the city-owned garage adjacent to the hotel for the relative bargain rate of $15 per 24-hour period, or valet park from the hotel's front entrance for $25 per night with unlimited in-and-out privileges.

“Needs a few updates”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

3 of 5 stars
New York
May 15, 2008

Overall, not a bad place to stay. It was quiet and spacious and clean. The only complaint that I have is that the bathrooms are in need of major updates. The water pressure sucked (maybe because I was all the way up on the 30th floor), the lighting was poor and the exhaust fan and countertops were non-existent. On the flip side, the room service was quick and tasty and the bed had big king sized pillows. Not the Renaissance but a hell of a lot better than the Brookshire!!

Thank you for writing a fair and balanced review of the Tremont Plaza Hotel. I agree with your comments, and I am pleased to announce that the hotel rooms will undergo a renovation beginning late this year and continuing into 2009!

Thank you for pointing out that our food is so wonderful! Besides In-Room Dining, we offer the gourmet Plaza Deli in our Lobby, as well as Tug's Bar & Grille on the 2nd floor of the hotel, and the Grand Cafe sandwich and gelato shop adjacent to the Tremont Grand venue.

“Don't Stay at Tremont”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

May 1, 2008

Check-in is 4pm but the rooms weren't ready at 4pm. I was told the rooms could be 30 to 45 minutes before they were available. I gave the front desk my cell phone number to call me when they were ready. I called 1 hour later and the rooms weren't available. I again gave them my cell phone number to call once the rooms were ready. I called the hotel again 2 hours later and the rooms weren't ready. Finally, I called 3 hours later and the rooms were ready. The hotel never called me to inform me of this. By 7pm my group was already attending an event that we had to get ready for in the restaurant bathroom and we weren't able to check into the room until 11pm. I emailed the hotel and told them about my experience and asked for some sort of credit or rebate since we didn’t get full use of the room but they never responded. The management company of this hotel is completely ill-equipped and uneducated in hotel operations...they were unprofessional and I would have been much better off staying at the Marriott (and so will you).

While I certainly empathize with your situation and apologize for your inconvenience, I do wish that we had the opportunity to address your concerns while you were still with us, via our 24-hour Manager on Duty or the Front Desk Manager on duty. All guest emails cross my desk, and I certainly have not received any correspondence outlining any of the issues outlined in your review. Either the Managing Director, Director of Operations, or I personally respond to every email that outlines even the smallest complaint. I welcome the chance to personally discuss this matter with you.
