“Good from afar, but far from good!”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

Jul 1, 2008

Let me begin by saying all the below comments were brought to the attention of hotel staff and management on numerous occasions and nothing was done.

Getting the Reservation: Recently I had a group stay at the Tremonts. We had four rooms reserved. From the beginning there were signs of trouble. When reserving the rooms, the staff was very rude. We also had a hard time getting a hold of anyone as the phone is not always picked up.

Getting Into Our Rooms: After flying across the county from the West, I arrived with a group of 12 individuals (with kids). We arrived at the hotel at 6:30pm. Check in was at 3:00pm. When we arrived at the hotel we were informed that our rooms were not ready. They were changing their entire computer system and they were experiencing problems. Fine, we understood and waited in the lobby. We were told that "any minute" we would have our rooms. A few minutes turned into 1 hr and 30 minutes waiting in a lobby. Upon talking with the staff numerous times we were always told "any minute." We were not the only ones. We were in a lobby of about 12 other individuals with the same issue. Even though our group was first, everyone else was issued rooms before us. Management had no comment as to why this occurred. When we were issued rooms, all the rooms were not the what we had requested. Management fought with me until I showed a printed receipt from their email confirmation. Up until then, I was told by the manager that he had given me what I had reserved. That conversation ended when proof was given. Again, no apologies.

The Rooms: The rooms are great if you just need a clean bed for the night. The rooms are older. All of our plumbing (four rooms) were labeled backwards so beware. Having a stream of hot water hitting you while you think it is cold is not fun! We had to call plumbing on one room as the faucet handle fell off. They did come and "fix" the problem, but it broke 10 minutes later.

Service: Overall the service here is poor. Internet is free here, but we didn't have a cable. We called down for a cable and told it was "on its way" although we never received it.

This hotel is independently operated so the manager always has the final word. In our case, the manager was not helpful at all. Nothing was every done to our bill. In general nothing was done at all. The manager had ample time to satisfy our complaints as we made him aware upon check in and check out. We were very glad we only stayed here one night. We moved across town to a Marriott and I am glad we did.

“Great Location”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

5 of 5 stars
Richmond, VA
Jun 2, 2008

I had a great stay at the Tremont recently. I was in Baltimore for a training event, and a block of rooms at the Tremont was reserved for us. So I can't speak to the reservation process, but I can offer a review on the rest.

I was very happily surprised with the size of the room. Mine had separate dining and living rooms in addition to a separate bedroom. Not knowing the Tremont was a suite hotel, I was not expecting that. The room was well furnished and very clean. Bedding was very nice, and the bed itself was very comfortable.

I had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel the evening we arrived. Even though we arrived rather late, the restaurant was happy to serve us.

This hotel is in a great location. It was a short walk to the Inner Harbor, which provided plenty of entertainment for me on the one free night I had while in town.

Overall, a very nice hotel. I would consider staying there again in the future if I was in Baltimore.

Thank you for your review, and for deomstrating an excellent feature of the Tremont Plaza. Our Premier One Bedroom Suites average over 700 square feet, and feature a bedroom with one king or one queen bed, a spacious living room, a game table with chairs for dining, and a kitchenette. We assign these rooms for long-term stays because having this room type is akin to having an apartment right in the ehart of downtown because of the vast amount of room. We're glad that Tug's Bar & Grille took great care of you! Tug's features a new menu prepared by Executive Chef Jaime Velasquez.

“Everything we needed was here”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

4 of 5 stars
Jacksonville, Florida

Booked this hotel through Priceline for 5 nights while we were in town to watch some baseball games. Was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews but was pleasantly surprised by what we got. We arrived at the Baltimore train station and decided to walk to the hotel since it was a nice day. Its about 12-15 blocks but we are a couple of young guys and it was no problem. Check in was easy and our request for double beds was met with no problems. Opened the room to our door and was greeted with a large room with Queen beds, a small but adequate kitchen, huge walk in closet area and a decent bathroom. Only drawback was our view was the broadside of a parking garage, not a big deal. The front desk pointed us to a nice grocery store just up the block where we could stock up our refridgerator for the week. The hotel is about 5 blocks from the Inner Harbor and about 8-10 blocks from Camden Yards.

All in all a great week and would definately stay here again.

Thank you for the great comments! We're glad you enjoyed your stay. I just wanted to touch on one of your comments to highlight its importance. Most hotels offer rooms with two full size/ double beds as their 2-bedded option. Not so at the Tremont Plaza! Each and every one of our 88 Studio Suites with Two Queen Beds offers just that--two queen beds. It's amazing what a difference that makes! My wife and I share a king bed at home, but when we travel we share a hotel room or suite with our children. When we're forced to downgrade from a king bed at home to a double bed on the road, the difference is noticeable. When we're fortunate enough to receive a room with two queen beds, the experience is much more tolerable. We're able to offer two queen beds because our Studio Suites average over 400 square feet--that's twice the size of the average hotel room!

“Not what we expected”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

Jun 1, 2008

We booked this hotel on priceline and got a good rate ($79).I would not pay any more than that for this hotel. The lobby of the hotel is fairly nice, but the room felt outdated and dingy, and was next to the elevator. When we asked to move we were told that our rate was only for a queen bed room next to the elevator; this was the first we heard of this. The desk staff was not knowledgeable about the area and was unable to assist us with anything more than basic directions to the Inner Harbor area. Some of the doormen tried to help but were not much more knowledgable. The bathroom was a disappointment as well; small and not updated at all. We were told that there was wireless internet in the lobby and deli area but were unable to connect, and there was noone to assist with this either. In addition, the area in which the hotel was located did not feel very safe; we learned on our last morning there that someone was stabbed 2 blocks from the hotel the night before.

I am certainly disappointed to read your comments about the Tremont Plaza. Many of your comments go very much against the tide of comments we've received throughout the spring and summer about how strong our guest service skills are. As far as the room type you booked, the rooms reserved on websites such as Priceline and Hotwire are Studio Suites with 1 Queen Bed. The location can be anywhere between the 6th and 37th floor, and those third-party sites do not promise guests any special requests. The Front Desk staff works hard to ensure that every request can be met, but your stay coincided with the Red Sox' only 2008 weekend visit to Camden Yards, and we were sold out and therefore limited in flexibility.

I personally tested all of our Bellstaff and Front Desk staff this week after reading your comments, and all know far more about downtown Baltimore restaurants, attractions, and directions than I would have expected. Would you mind sharing more details about your experience with me offline? I would like to know what staff members were unable to provide the routine assistance you describe in your review.

As far as the condition of the guestroom and bathroom, as mentioned previously on TripAdvisor, we are planning a multi-million dollar renovation for the end of 2008 into 2009 to address these concerns.

“Loved it!”

Tremont Plaza Hotel on St Paul Place

May 26, 2008

The front desk clerk transfered my reservation from Tremont Park to the Plaza at the same rate I had even though the Plaza rate is higher.
Nice bright clean room, updated decor. My room was very quiet even though it was next to the elevator; I didn't hear a thing. I always request to be far away from elevators and ice machines because I hear everything, not this time.

Thank you for the glowing comments! Regarding the quiet nature of the rooms despite being near the elevators, there's 2 important factors: as an all-suites hotel, our rooms are spacious and therefore the sleeping areas are set back so that outside noise including elevators cannot be easily heard; and as a high-rise, 37-story building, we feature only 9 or 10 rooms on each guest floor, so there's simply not that much hallway traffic. That means guests are not subjected to guest or employee conversations that typically can be heard at the elevator banks of most hotels.

We look forward to taking great care of you next time you travel to Baltimore!
