“Mostly gross”

French Quarter

With the French Quarter being the focal point of tourist hype in New Orleans I felt sort of obligated to take a look - but it turned out to be a brief one, and during the day, mind you - not sure I want to know what it looks like at night.
Apart from a few reasonably neat though very touristy parts (e.g. Rue Royale) this is mostly a smelly swamp full of sleazy bars, tacky souvenir boutiques and sex shops. Streets are populated by drunk and/or drinking tourists in varying stages of undress.

If this sounds inviting, then by all means go since I guess there are few others places that support no-holds-barred partying as well as this one. Otherwise, there are lots of nicer locations to travel to.

“out of town freinds”

I live 80 miles north of the Quarter . 26 may 08 I had some friends from out of town come in and wanted to go the french quarter , so as a transportation we rode our motorcycles down with the price of gas and such it made it more economical . And leaving more money to spend while visiting . So we arrive in the quarter and tried for 20 min or so to park , no one would let us park a motorcycle in the pay parking lots and seemed to be quite rude about it . By the way we are family type motorcycle riders with tour bikes . So end result I-10 east to the Mississippi Gulf Coast . Where we were met with open arms and welcomed with smiling faces and posted areas for motorcycle parking with video surveillance even. So I wish you luck in the Quarter, but my freind and I will going to the MS Gulf Coast to spend our money.

The F.Q. is one of the most unique, history-filled, beautiful areas of any city I've visited in the US.

If you're a history-buff it's one of the oldest and greatest places in the US to visit for North American history.

If you're a party animal, Bourbon St. puts Vegas to shame.

If you're a food connoisseur, there are excellent restaurants all over the FQ.

If you're a music fan, great music is very easy to find--espcially on Frenchmen St. or during the F.Q. festival.

You can even find an entire street lined with art and antique dealers.

It's definitely one of my favorite places in the world to visit. We spent a week there and I can't wait to go back.

“Lovely City”

I am not sure why folks don't see French Quarter for the things it has to offer. My husband and I enjoyed this lovely place for its food & entertainment. We are not big time drinkers but enjoyed walking on Bourbon Street, sipping on hurricanes, & going in & out of bars and seeing some exhibitionists here & there. It is definitely not a place for kids (although we were surprised to see some at 1 a.m. hanging on to their parents who had beer on their hands.....) During the time we were there (in April) the French Quarter Festival was happening so it was very crowded with lots of music and booths and booths of food. Gave us a chance to taste some good and not so good local food. Wear comfy shoes as you will be walking a lot. We took in a swamp tour where we saw the devastation of Katrina. It is sad that after so many years, some parts are still not recovered.
We had some very good shrimp and crawfish dishes. We rented a car at the end of the trip and drove to Lafayette through Cajun country, visiting plantation houses & tasting local food along the way. We truly enjoyed our trip.

“NOLA's bad rep is totally undeserved”

I am only writing this because the latest review was apparently from some old boring people who were surprised there were cops and loud music on Bourbon Street? Well, my friends and I had a safe, fun, amazing time over the weekend in our first time in N.O. Dangerous and filthy New Orleans is not. There is plenty to see and do, but a lot of it is geared toward "Mature" audiences. And BTW, we didn't see any nudity or anything out of the ordinary on Bourbon! Pretty sure that's just during Mardi Gras. If you like fun, culture, great food and music (and alcohol), then GO! You won't be disappointed. But don't just stay in the French Quarter. There's a lot of city to explore!
P.S. Be prepared to WALK, parking is limited seemingly everywhere.
