I lived in New Orleans all my life until 7 years ago. Unfortunately it took me moving away to appreciate all the beautiful and historical places the Big Easy has to offer. The St. Louis Cathedral is undoubtebly one of those attractions you shouldn't miss.
The catherdral is prestegiously located just behind Jackson Square, in the heart of the French Quarter. The outside has 3 huge steeples that are picturesque. I'm sure you'd recognize them from movies filmed in New Orleans, popular photos, etc.
The inside is breath-takingly beautiful! It has vivid stained glass windows, frescoe ceilings that are adorned with decorations, a beautiful tabernacle that was made in Belgium a Baroque carved altar and so much more. There is so much to take in when you visit the cathedral!
The tour guides are extremely knowledgable. Most, if not all of them have grown up in and around the French Quarter and can tell you stories about the church and past events from when they were younger. The love and passion they have for the church and the city is a real treat to experience in itself.
The Cathedral has a long line of historical events under its belt as well. For example, Pope John Paul II said mass on the plaza there in the 80's. They hold a St. Joseph's Altar there that is open to everyone. It's a true work or art and is a must see no matter what your religious background is. I make it a point to visit the cathedral each time I go home.
