My husband and I went to the French Quarter in New Orleans to have a 5 day "gourmet" vacation. We love trying soups, gumbos and bisques! I was a bit apprehensive about going after hurricane Katrina, but the quarter, warehouse and business districts were fine for tourists. We stayed at the Cornstalk Fence Hotel at 915 Royal in the French Quarter. The property is kept clean and comfortable inside and out. Antiques and chandeliers abound. There is a huge front porch at the entrance,. and a gallery with seating on the second floor. It is fun to sit outside and have the mule drawn carriage tour guides stop in front and hear them talk about the Cornstalk and what famous people stayed there, Elvis being one of them.
One of the few places that has off - street parking. (We hardly used our rental car, in fact, next time we will just take a shuttle from the airport.) It has a pleasant garden area with a soothing fountain. It was within walking distance to all our favorite cafes and restaurants: Cafe Amelie, The Old Coffee Pot, Pat O'Briens, The Gumbo Shop, K-Paul's, Emeril's Nola, Ralph & Kacoo, Cresent City Brewhouse, and the famous Cafe Du Monde.
This is definitely a great vacation spot, especially since it is not as crowded as in the past and one can enjoy tours and restaurants with no waiting. I am glad we went and certainly recommend the French Quarter to everyone!
