After having already made reservations at this hotel a few months in advance, I decided to take a look at the reviews on tripadvisor.
I wasn't thrilled to see such extreme reviews - either really negative or really good.
After staying there for 2 nights, now I know why.
Night 1:
We checked in with our friends and were given rooms 108 and 109 on the Chartres side of the hotel. We each had a wall facing the street. One of the reasons we chose this hotel was because it wasn't near any major bars, any restaurants and was in a fairly quiet looking area of the quarter. However, at night we could hear the horse-drawn carriages going by every hour and the tour guides going through their scripts. We could hear people having loud conversations pretty much all night long and then there was the 6am trash pickup, the hour long dog barking before the owner finally shut it up and the hammering by a neighbor at o'dark thirty in the AM.
None of us got a good night's sleep and were miserable.
Night 2:
We asked for a new room since the first one was so terrible and got rooms 241 and 239. These rooms were much better and were nothing like the rooms we had the first night. We had hardwood floors, brass four-poster beds and a sitting area. The bathroom was much larger and we had a dry bar with a mini fridge. The beds didn't have a sink hole in the center and we couldn't hear any street noise so all of us got a good night's sleep.
The difference in these 2 sets of rooms was like night & day! Now I know why some people put such horrible reviews about it and why some thought it was great.
When booking here, be sure to ask for an interior room, one that doesn't have a wall facing Chartres or St Philip.
When we checked in, the desk attendant wasn't very friendly, but the person we met that had the night shift was very pleasant.
They offer breakfast which we took advantage of only once and it was pretty standard, nothing special but did the trick. The dish TV doesn't get great reception, but you don't usually spend too much time watching it anyway. The shower pressure even varied between the two rooms, 239 and 241 had better water pressure.
You can't book online and have to send them a check for the first night and wait for a confirmation to be snail-mailed to you since they won't take a credit card for reservations, although you can pay with a credit card upon arrival.
It's close to everything in the quarter and there's a quaint 24 hr pub about a block away that's pretty quiet and they offer nightly ghost tours.
My main advice about this hotel: book at your own risk - it's rather hit or miss depending on the room you end up with.
Good luck
