My family recently stayed at the Garlands over the Thanksgiving holiday. The guest cottages and grounds are lovely - tastefully decorated with antiques, have hardwood floors, high ceilings, are clean and just plain charming. The breakfast is also fresh and very tasty. And the room rates are reasonable.
The neighborhood, however, is in total disrepair and was, frankly, kind of offputting [like much of the area around the French Quarter]. The property is also directly across the street from Armstrong Park. We rented a car and had easy access in and out of the secured parking, but when we took a cab we made sure the cabbie waited for us to get inside.
I do not recommend visiting N'Awlins for Thanksgiving weekend as the city hosts the Bayou Classic College Football game - AKA one big excuse for older kids to cruise up and down Canal Street in seriously pimped out cars for two days straight. It is complete pandemonium and incredibly frustrating getting anywhere around the downtown area.
If you have ANY trouble sleeping, request a cottage away from the street. We had the St. Louis cottage [which is really nice], but unfortunately, it is closest to the street and we heard a lot of racket.
Garlands Guest House will be changing owners around January 2005. I hope the new owners care for the property as much as the Garlands have as I would love to visit again. If not, I might try The House on Bayou Road or the W in the Quarter.
