I'm really picky about what hotels I book, so after extensive searching I settled on the Avenue Garden Hotel. I usually book through discount travel sites, but it was cheaper in this case to book directly from the hotel's website. We'd booked a Tues-Thurs nights and then changed it to Wed-Fri nights. Since we did this, the hotel called and said the only way they could have us three nights without making us switch rooms was to put us in the honeymoon suite. They upgraded us free of charge, which was exciting!
We had the room with the big round bed. What the other reviews said about this room was true--there was a rip in the comforter and small spots on it, but we never sleep with hotel comforters anyway, so we threw it on the floor and turned the heat up so we wouldn't need it. (It was in the 30's and raining in New Orleans the weekend we stayed!) The fun thing about this bed was the huge mirror on the ceiling!
At first we were frustrated because--like the reviews said--the room was very dim. As I went to lock the door at night, though, I noticed a small bar on the light switch--the room has a dimmer switch! We turned it up and the lights were very bright!! It was romantic to be able to dim the lights, too.
The tub was slow draining. I had to fiddle with it because it had closed. The bathroom was nice, though. There was a rainfall shower head which would have been nicer if there'd been a little more pressure, but it was fine all the same and there was plenty of hot water.
There was extended basic cable and a DVD player. I wish we'd known; I would have brought some movies.
The worst part about the hotel was the noise. We didn't hear as much noise as we thought we would from the pizzeria, but the windows were thin enough to hear the traffic through. I plugged my ears up with tissues and slept fine, and my husband slept fine without them. I can see how this would bother some people, though. It was a nuisance.
Overall, this room wasn't perfect, but for $60 a night it can't be beat. If the management would put just a little work into this room--double-paned windows, a new comforter or simply a good stitching and heavy-duty cleaning of the old one, and a more reliable internet service (we were able to get on every now and then for about ten minutes at a time), then they could charge much more for this room and surely make their investment back.
The location was great: on St. Charles just a short street car ride from the French Quarter. Also, you must try The Slice, VooDoo BBQ, and Sushi Brothers while you're at the AGH. Their proximity to the hotel was a definite bonus for AGH! The garage had plenty of parking, even on Friday night. We never had trouble finding a spot.
