We found Avenue Inn through the Tulane website and it was wonderful! The access to everything--campus, French Quarter, Garden District, neighborhood restaurants--was great. The St. Charles streetcar stops in front of the Inn, so you can leave your car behind in the private lot (no extra charge!) The first floor public space retains the character of the original mansion with dark woodwork, carved mantels and antique furnishings. Our room had two four poster rice style beds with private bath and was spacious and homey. The ceiling height was unbelievable. My teenagers appreciated the free late-night access to the snack tower and free wireless Internet access. We met new people every morning over our yummy continental breakfast. Joe was great for providing restaurant recommendations and help with cabs and booking attractions. Put aside any worries that New Orleans is a crippled city. It's full of life and beauty. You can find abandoned houses and blue tarps if you go trawling, but the areas of interest to most visitors show no signs of Katrina. The real story according to Joe is that over a million people were evacuated safely and returned quickly.
