We wanted to spend our final day of our two week European trip visiting the beaches of Normandy. Through last minute planning we ended up booking an all day tour with Overlord tours. This was hands down both my wife and I's favorite day of the trip.
Guides, Oliver and Alan both were extremely knowledgeable. Not only did we get to see Omaha and Utah beaches, but we saw things that we would have never came across nor known the significance of such areas if we were trying to do it on our own. We were lead through cow fields, meadows, city centers, farms and farm houses tracing events of the first couple days of the invasion. Their personal relationship with some of these veterans and land owners gave us access to stories and sites that there is absolutely no way we would have been able to do it on our own. They had numerous pictures of troops, gernerals, tanks, guns in the very place we would be standing at. All the sites we saw would have taken us 3-4 days to find and see on our own. My wife went from not having much interest or knowledge about the invasion (or WWII), to becoming so interested she bought the entire band of brothers series (along with a 7 disc WWII documentary) when we got home. My wife and I would highly recommend this to anyone who has an interest in seeing the D-Day beaches.
If there is one hitch, it would be the meeting place where the tour begins. It is by the Bayeux Tapestry at a place called the Quebec Center. We asked numerous locals when trying to locate it, and they had no idea what we were talking about. It is the justice center. So if you get lost, ask the locals where that is. We would highly recommend also, staying in Caen or Bayeux. We tried making it from Le Mont St. Michel and nearly missed our tour.
