After reading several Tripadvisor reviews that mentioned very reasonable rates they achieved through Priceline, my boyfriend and I decided to be adventurous and bid on a 4 star Buckhead hotel. We were hoping for the InterContinental, but got the Hyatt Grand for $100/night-not bad at all! Before our departure, we read several reviews about the Hyatt, and were slightly nervous about our future accommodations. Upon arrival, we thought the lobby was very pleasant and the staff friendly. We were, however, greeted by a long line at the check-in counter. We tried to ask for a high floor in an effort to avoid street noise (as a helpful tripadvisor member suggested), but unfortunately, were given the 9th floor. The room, besides being small and somewhat dated, was pleasant enough for $100. What severely bothered both of us, was the pungent musty/moldy/smoky smell. We tried to remain positive, and walked around the Buckhead area for a bit. However, upon returning to our hotel, when we walked into the elevators, we were reminded of the smell that awaited us in our room. We feel that this floor used to be a smoking floor, although the Hyatt staff denied it. Coincidentally (or not?) we both got migraine headaches that night. Even though we paid for 2 nights, we checked out after our first night and treated ourselves to the InterContinental (located across the street) which was a welcome breath of fresh air and a world apart from the Hyatt.
In regards to restaurants, Bricktops restaurant and Caribou cafe (both are close to the Hyatt and InterContinental) were both great. We embarrassingly ate at Bricktops 3 times within 24 hours, and Caribou provided great coffee-better than the coffee at the Hyatt.
Overall, if it wasn’t for the smell, the hotel would have been fine—not great, but fine. The pool wasn’t too exciting and the “Japanese garden” was kind of a joke. One positive aspect was the gym—very state of the art, and the gym towels were far better quality than the towels in our hotel room. We are not going to become repeat Priceline users again, as we do not want to get stuck at another stinky Hyatt!
