I just returned from a four-day stay at the Super 8 Atlanta, and I feel compelled to dissuade any future travelers from staying at this place if at all possible. Before I start my complaints, I want to place my opinions in the correct perspective. This place is cheap. I'm a recent college graduate on a budget, so I knew that fact going in. Moreover, I'm sure everyone who reads this review is looking for a deal as well--therefore, I'm not going to write about tiny rooms, shady locations, and questionable clientele. Insteady, I rather discuss the rude attitudes and incompetence of their staff.
The way this hotel staff treated me was summarized before I even left for Atlanta. The afternoon of the day before I was scheduled to check in, I called Super 8 to confirm my reservation. They answered, put me on hold, and simply forgot about me--I was essentially hung up on.
The next day, I arrived after a long and tiring 470-mile drive from Cincinnati. The man at the front desk did not exactly greet me with the warmest welcome, but at this point I didn't care. I was tired and I just wanted to get my keycard, lie down, and rest for a bit. Besides, I grew up and lived in New York City for 13 years so a little terseness never hurt me. After the slow ride in their tiny elevator, I was at my door--and I couldn't get in. They gave me the wrong keycard.
A couple of nights later, I was once again locked out of my room. Turns out that they apparently split my four-night stay into two separate reservations. Therefore, I should have checked out after my second night and re-checked in. Since I didn't, they automatically checked me out and my keycard no longer worked. Now that's all nice, and in the name of saving money, I wouldn't have minded. But it also would've been really nice if someone on the staff had the mental acuity to tell me this--oh, I don't know--when I first checked in. The highlight of my entire stay, though, was the conversation I had with the staff on this issue. It went something like this:
Me: Excuse me, my keycards don't work.
Staff: What room are you in?
Me: 825.
Staff: You're not in 825. What room are you in?
"You're not in 825. What room are you in?" Someone please call this man's parents and ask them to re-teach their son some manners. I never worked in the service industry but I'm pretty sure that line should've went something like: "I'm sorry, I don't have you listed in 825, are you sure that's the correct room number?" I would've even been satisfied with a short and simple "I don't have you in 825." But to retort to my response in that rude and insulting tone of voice, insinuating I don't even know my own room number? I would tolerate that from a friend or sibling, but absolutely not from a person whose job is to supposedly serve his customers.
I know some may respond to this review with sayings like "you get what you pay for", and I absolutely agree that is true. However, that should apply only to a certain extent. Most of the other reviews criticizing the size of the rooms, the noisy location, etc. are true, and those factors are indeed what you should expect when staying at a cheap hotel. Even in the service category, you have to expect some subpar standards. But the competency of the staff to do their -job- and the common decency to -not- be rude to the customer? These are not things I should have to shell out extra dollars for.
