“Good hotel but could use improvement”

Fairfield Inn San Antonio Downtown/Market Square

Mar 13, 2008

Bottomline: A good, inexpensive hotel with a great staff and easy access to San Antonio via highways or the trolley to the Riverwalk. Don't expect a great hotel though.

I booked this property based on the reviews here, and I am not as impressed as I thought I would be. I will say that the staff here is excellent -- some of the best I've seen for lower end hotels. However, the property needs some money invested, and the parking situation is not optimal.

Pluses: The staff! Every front desk person, every person working with breakfast, every housekeeper, and every service/maintenance person I met was top notch. Location is good. The hotel is right off the highway so access to other parts of the city is very good. There is no highway noise. Also, there's no train noise, at least in my room, which is apparently common in San Antonio. The trolley for access to the Riverwalk is right around the corner and very convenient. The Marketplace area is a short walk away, though the area is a little bit sketchy on the way at night.

Disappointments: Pool is very small -- not big enough for swimming laps and smaller than most hotel pools. Workout out room is very small -- more like a closet with three machines and a TV. No weights. Both the pool and the workout area are adequate but not what I expected.

Minuses: The rooms need to be updated, particularly the bathrooms. Mine had peeling paint on the doorframe, stained and broken tiles, a leaky faucet, and fairly dim lighting. The towels are great for exfoliating! The sink area was fine, but the toilet/shower area is showing its age. The walls are fairly thin, and in particular, the people above were stomping about. Since that rarely happens in my hotel stays, it made me think that the floor/ceiling was not as thick as it could be. The main room is acceptable but uninspired -- HUGE, blank walls. Parking later at night is a serious problem. The parking immediately in front of the hotel fills up, and the overflow is all over the place -- this hotel shares the area with a Residence Inn, and it's an absolute rabbit warren of hotel buildings, streets and parking spots. Can be quite confusing.

“Outstanding Hotel Staff”

This hotel has the friendliest and most helpful staff that I have encountered in a long time. Everyone was the ultimate professional and totally interested in the well-being of the guests. The hotel's continental breakfast was decent, and every evening they have wine and cheese in the lobby. The room was clean and comfortable, although obviously there is nothing luxurious here. (Why do most hotels have these drafty wall- mounted air conditioners)? The property is only a couple of blocks from Market Square, which at least this time of year, didn't have much going on at night except for a couple of good Mexican restaurants. There is a one dollar trolley that stops every ten minutes a block from the hotel, so there is easy access to the downtown riverwalk and other attractions.

The hotel was convenient to downtown San Antonio and very close to the Market Square. The front desk people were very helpful and friendly. We felt that they were doing everything to make our stay the best they could. Thank you!

“Old and dont plan on feeding your family breakfast here!!”

This hotel has not been very well kept up, paint missing from the door frames and broken tile in the bathroom. The bathroom had someone else's hair in the tub prior to even being used by my family. They claim to have a heated indoor pool, but, it was so cold that we could not stand to be in it. If you plan on feeding your family with the free breakfast, dont count on it. They have maybe 8-10 tables in the breakfast area and if you are there on a busy weekend you will never get a table. They had the maintenance guy cooking the free waffles and he had a huge list of requests for others requesting waffles and although we were down there at 930am for breakfast, he stated that there was no way that he would get our waffles made before they closed at 10am. This happened on both days of our stay. So unless you plan on going down to breakfast really early, dont plan on eating there. They do offer other stuff like yogurt and breakfast sandwiches, but, they were out of those also and not to mention out of coffee.

“As good as advertised”

Fairfield Inn San Antonio Downtown/Market Square

5 of 5 stars
Santa Clarita
Nov 13, 2007

This Fairfield reminded me why I am such a big fan of TripAdvisor. Normally, people tend to think of Fairfield as the inferior brand to Courtyard and had it not been for my use of TripAdvisor I would have stayed at the Courtyard. But the reviews for the Fairfield were right on, one of the best hotel experiences and outstanding value.
Upon check-in I was upgraded to a suite because of my Marriott status. It is without a doubt the nicest value-priced hotel suite I have ever stayed in. A separate living and sleeping area. An entertainment center complete with a stereo cd-player. Two televisions and a spacious work area.
Breakfast is comparable to what you get at a Courtyard for $10. Location is not bad at all, quick drive to the Riverwalk. My regret is that I only had 1 night to stay. No matter what the reason for my next trip to San Antonio, I will be here again.
