The Gunter is a beautiful old hotel built with the kind of class and attention to detail that most even expensive modern hotels lack. It's been updated and the rooms modernized, so it's really a great mix of classic, period-piece elegance with modern comfort. Several reviewers have commented on the small rooms -- my room, though, was quite large. I paid a cheap conference rate ($110) and was placed on the north side overlooking the pool. The room was decorated with quality furniture: 2 queen beds, a pair of arm chairs with table in a corner, a long desk along the window and a padded bench in the opposite corner. The bathroom was divided into a shower and toilet in one room and a vanity just outside it. The bed was very comfortable (although not Westin Heavenly quality).
Unlike many 4* (and 5*) hotels, the Gunter actually had an adequately staffed concierge desk, running 1-2 concierges throughout the day. The front desk was genuinely friendly. The pool overlooked an ugly parking lot and was partly in the shade most of the day, but it was functional and somewhat attractive. They currently have no workout facility, but there is a gym across the street that would be happy to sell you a day pass for $10. ;-)
Only two downsides for my stay: it's only a 1/2 block from the Riverwalk, but you just can't compete for ambience within being ON the Riverwalk. Second, the dining room food was bland, mediocre old school.
A very nice hotel and stay.
