“Great Place, odd location”

Comfort Inn Alamo Riverwalk

Mar 23, 2008

We stayed here for Spring Break 2008. Our room was a Suite (202). Large room, walls were thick (former jail) so outside sound was minimal. Staff very friendly and helpful. Morning breakfast was OK, Texas shaped waffles were a hit with the kids, but dining area too small. Parking off site ($8) had no attendant but we had no issues. Onsite parking ($16) is limited so reserve early. I would recommend this hotel for folks looking for a cheaper alternative to the Riverwalk hotels. Location was midway between Riverwalk area and Merchant square. No other hotels nearby. We had no safety issues but rundown buildings and graffiti don't give much comfort. The latest we stayed out was 10:30pm, there were still plenty of tourists on the streets so we felt safe. I'd probably take a taxi if it was after midnight.
Merchant square had a street festival going on, looked like mostly locals having lots of fun. We ate at Mi Tierra but the waiter's lack of service dampened our enthusiasm for the place.

“Enjoyed our stay”

Comfort Inn Alamo Riverwalk

4 of 5 stars

Booked our stay at the last minute directly and found the accomodations great. It is a little out of the way but within walking distance (about 12-15 minutes from Riverwalk). Once we arrived and parked the car (cost $8.00 a day across the street and one way streets are a pain or $16.00 a day on site but this is not the best either because of turning vehicle around is difficult). The staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and there was a lady on site to assist with making waffles and keeping area cleaned. This is a historical building but remodeling was done great. Room was large enough and bathroom was granite counters and all very clean. I am a picky person when comes to cleaning and they left no areas undone. Check in and out went quickly. The Domino pizza is next door but did not use. Although distance was not as close as usually like the price was great and accomodations fine. We left car parked the entire two days and walked everywhere (RIverwalk, Alamo, Towers, La Villata, etc.) Met a couple that loved the Hawthorne hotel and we usually stay at Emily Morgan but there is a big price difference so this Comfort Inn does well for area and price.

“Great alternative to expensive Riverwalk hotels.”

Attended a conference at a San Antonio Riverwalk hotel, but opted for less-expensive lodging. Comfort Inn Alamo/Riverwalk is a very short walk from the Riverwalk, as well as the other associated attractions. The hotel is in an old jail building, and I believe is on the National Register of Historic Places. This provided a unique, historic setting not often achieved in chain hotels. The room I stayed in had large windows and tall, vaulted ceilings. The hotel and my room was very clean and the staff was courteous and helpful. Overall, a great stay and highly recommended!

“Great Hotel & Great Rate”

Comfort Inn Alamo Riverwalk

For a Comfort Inn I thought it would be OK/fine, but it was really great and we loved everything about it. It just opened as a hotel 2-3 years ago so everything is in good condition (e.g., furniture, bathrooms, etc). Our room and bathroom was absolutely spotless, and the staff were all SO friendly. They were happy to help with anything and everything. Our room had a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. The room itself was larger than I expected. We used the computer in the business center downstairs a few times to check into our flight home, to research a restaurant, etc. and we were happy that even though the hotel was fully booked we didn't have to wait at all for the computer.

The location is fabulous. It's just a 5-10 minute walk to the Riverwalk, depending how fast you walk. I would say it's 10-15 minutes to the Alamo, again, depending how fast you walk. And it's just 2 blocks away from the market square (El Mercado) where the most fabulous Mexican restaurant is located called Mi Tierra (open 24 hours per day!). The food at this place is addicting. We also walked over to Shiloh's for fabulous authentic German food. By the way if you don't want to walk there are trolleys that are $1 per ride which you can take to ALL the popular sights in town.

Unfortunately we didn't make it down to breakfast any of our 5 mornings there, as we slept in every day and breakfast is served 6 am - 10 am. Way too early for us especially after enjoying the Riverwalk and Mi Tierra late night!

We did not rent a car so I can't comment on the parking other than to let you know the on-site lot is $16 per day, and if you park across the street it's $8 per day.

Some folks complained that their rooms smelled smokey or musty, but that was not our experience at all in room 400.

It was a really great hotel, especially for the great price. When I return to San Antonio I will not hesitate to stay at this hotel again.

My wife and I wanted to visit San Antonio and spend some time at the San Marcos outlets. We first researched the hotels on the Riverwalk but did not want to pay $180+ for 1 night. We found the price of Comfort Inn Alamo at less than $140 and really enjoyed it. Couple of blocks from I35 heading towards outlets which took us 25 minutes. The staff was great and let us know of the attractions around the hotel and gave us a coupon for some stores.

The room we had was very nice, king size bed with small desk and nice, clean bathroom. Beds was comfortable and no noise at night. We were 2 blcks from the market and about 5-6 blocks from Riverwalk. In the morning there was breakfast with bagels, muffins, Texas shaped waffles, hard boiled egg and fruits. We spent too much time visiting the San Marcos outlets that we were not able to go to Riverwalk or the Alamo.Next time we'll stay at the Comfort Inn Alamo, well worth it.
