The Comfort Suites near Sea World in San Antonio was my initial first night’s stay for a technology conference. We stayed here in June 2008.
Location: located on the outer NW loop off an access road, you are about 10 minutes from Sea World, and approximately 20 minutes from parking at the Riverwalk. Roads can be very confusing near the hotel, so either have a good map or a GPS. In 2008 construction was everywhere on I-10.
This is a very nice intermediate to above average hotel. The color schemes are very nice with lots of browns, patterns and deep colors. Large floor tile is used throughout and the hallways have a design typically found in more expensive stays which included lots of molding, deep colors again, and transition colors. The design team for the chain nailed this well and I was impressed as it held up against much more expensive hotels.
Pool: An indoor pool is not large (includes hot tub on the side) but it looks very nice. Stone walls and tile floor make the pool very attractive. A far cry from a cookie-cutter pool at your local motel.
Breakfast: This is a very nice free breakfast. Hot food including biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, toast, and make your own waffles are included. Juices, milk, coffee, and cereal are included as well. An LCD TV with the news sits in a divider near the seating area so you don’t have to endure the totally awkward silence of breakfast rooms of some motels.
Bathrooms: fully tiled the bathroom of my room was handicap accessible. That’s the idea but as a former special education teacher I can tell you that it’s accessible in name only. The tub/shower is not zero access but is a lower profile.
Now, the BAD: the mirror in the bathroom fogs horribly. In fact it fogs even with the door open as I tried this morning. Some mirror surfaces are prone to fogging and this one is at the top of the list. That coupled with less than stellar bathroom “mirror” lighting make it difficult to apply makeup or shave….but it’s not a horrible situation. There is a full body mirror on the bedroom as a backup. There is no makeup mirror at the desk.
Air conditioning works great and you have control of a digital thermostat. We did feel the room humidity was a bit high. The air/heat is through vents (ie: central heat/air).
Design: We stayed in a king bed with Jacuzzi styled tub (we didn’t try it). The bedroom is separated from the tub, desk and bathroom by two glass paned doors which look great and cut off the noise for early risers, but do tend to get in the way in the bedroom if opened.
Cleanliness: This is a clean hotel including the room we were in. Tile was mildew free and the grout was clear of scum. Carpeting was in great shape and also clean.
TV: a 25” unit (not LCD) with cable TV.
Internet: The first day had intermittent success where it dropped out and came back…but once that ended the evening and next morning had good Internet. I used both the wireless and the wired Ethernet. Speeds were in the 750K download range.
Parking: just fine and plenty of room.
Bottom Line: This is an excellent choice for a hotel in San Antonio, but you need to know it’s not near the Riverwalk or downtown S.A.. You’re located in NW San Antonio but near roads that will get you where you need to go. As a moderate choice, the Comfort Suites near Sea World is an excellent stay.
