“The Very Good, Some Bad, and NOT Ugly”

Comfort Suites Near Seaworld

Jun 29, 2008

The Comfort Suites near Sea World in San Antonio was my initial first night’s stay for a technology conference. We stayed here in June 2008.

Location: located on the outer NW loop off an access road, you are about 10 minutes from Sea World, and approximately 20 minutes from parking at the Riverwalk. Roads can be very confusing near the hotel, so either have a good map or a GPS. In 2008 construction was everywhere on I-10.

This is a very nice intermediate to above average hotel. The color schemes are very nice with lots of browns, patterns and deep colors. Large floor tile is used throughout and the hallways have a design typically found in more expensive stays which included lots of molding, deep colors again, and transition colors. The design team for the chain nailed this well and I was impressed as it held up against much more expensive hotels.

Pool: An indoor pool is not large (includes hot tub on the side) but it looks very nice. Stone walls and tile floor make the pool very attractive. A far cry from a cookie-cutter pool at your local motel.

Breakfast: This is a very nice free breakfast. Hot food including biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, toast, and make your own waffles are included. Juices, milk, coffee, and cereal are included as well. An LCD TV with the news sits in a divider near the seating area so you don’t have to endure the totally awkward silence of breakfast rooms of some motels.

Bathrooms: fully tiled the bathroom of my room was handicap accessible. That’s the idea but as a former special education teacher I can tell you that it’s accessible in name only. The tub/shower is not zero access but is a lower profile.

Now, the BAD: the mirror in the bathroom fogs horribly. In fact it fogs even with the door open as I tried this morning. Some mirror surfaces are prone to fogging and this one is at the top of the list. That coupled with less than stellar bathroom “mirror” lighting make it difficult to apply makeup or shave….but it’s not a horrible situation. There is a full body mirror on the bedroom as a backup. There is no makeup mirror at the desk.

Air conditioning works great and you have control of a digital thermostat. We did feel the room humidity was a bit high. The air/heat is through vents (ie: central heat/air).

Design: We stayed in a king bed with Jacuzzi styled tub (we didn’t try it). The bedroom is separated from the tub, desk and bathroom by two glass paned doors which look great and cut off the noise for early risers, but do tend to get in the way in the bedroom if opened.

Cleanliness: This is a clean hotel including the room we were in. Tile was mildew free and the grout was clear of scum. Carpeting was in great shape and also clean.

TV: a 25” unit (not LCD) with cable TV.

Internet: The first day had intermittent success where it dropped out and came back…but once that ended the evening and next morning had good Internet. I used both the wireless and the wired Ethernet. Speeds were in the 750K download range.

Parking: just fine and plenty of room.

Bottom Line: This is an excellent choice for a hotel in San Antonio, but you need to know it’s not near the Riverwalk or downtown S.A.. You’re located in NW San Antonio but near roads that will get you where you need to go. As a moderate choice, the Comfort Suites near Sea World is an excellent stay.

“Not that impressed”

Comfort Suites Near Seaworld

We stayed here for 6 nights while in town for my son's graduation from basic training. There were four of us, two adults, two children. When we entered the room (very late at night) we found a fruit snack wrapper on floor, crumpled sheets and blanket on the fold-out bed (I have never seen a fold-out bed in twin size), which tells me they were dirty, and a big stain on the carpet next to one of the beds that looked like chocolate milk or something of that nature, but no one made an effort to clean.

Checking in was easy, although when I checked out, I asked for my receipt and was told I would get one from Expedia as I booked through them. They could have charged me $10,000 for all I knew. I found all of the front desk girls on their cell phones every time I went to the desk, which was very frequently as there were never any towels in the pool area. Some were indignant when interrupted. A few girls were nice, but otherwise they seemed like they were annoyed with anyone who approached them. Not much verbalization from them either.
The worst part of my stay was when the fire alarm went off at 5 or 6 AM on a Sunday morning for about 20 seconds then stopped. Scared my kids.......but then it happened again on Tuesday at 6AM AGAIN, this time everyone evacuated the building only to be told to go in because when they turned on the waffle iron for the day it was smoking and set off the alarm. Not very comforting.
Rooms were smaller than I expected for a "suite", but liked the two tv's, didn't like the sink and mirrors outside of the bathroom. Chair cushion was absolutely filthy, no one ever sat in it. My son and his friend came off base with us, but room was too small to sit and visit without being all over the beds.

“Above average with some drawbacks and some plus's”

Comfort Suites Near Seaworld

Jun 20, 2008

Traveled to SA for Air Force graduation; A strong word of advice, rent or buy a GPS unit for your travels, this motel was very difficult to locate at first and is not at all near Sea World, it's about 4-5 miles from it. The desk staff (2 females) on duty around noon on 6/10/08 had us driving in circles for 2 hours with two tired, hungry and cranky babies after a long flight, people in the area all had their own directions or never heard of Alamo Downs Road/Drive or Ave., having to call the front desk four times after they had us on the other side of the city and way north or west, (several times we were left on hold or disconnected) they became very unhelpful, at times nasty, to the point of belittling, one girl saying "I know just where you are, turn around and get on Rt 151, we did that and found ourselves in the middle of nowhere; we called again, this time she was snotty, "you need to turn around", well, how did she know what direction we were pointed? We went to the Lackland AFB BX and purchaced a Tom-Tom GPS.

We arrived at the motel, nice looking place, pretty safe and clean but no great views of anything but parking lots, a car dealership lot and a highway; it's located off of I-410 and down a side street industrial park called Alamo Downs Industrial Park, no one ever mentioned that as the huge sign is set back away from the access road that runs along side I-410.

The two girls on duty need to have their job descriptions reviewed as their attitude reflected poor customer service and understanding.

Our reservations were made 5 months in advance, I requested a first floor room and close to the entrance as I have spine injuries with pain/dificulty walking. We requested two pack and plays (which were first come first served); we were placed on the third floor (room 320), we were given one pack and play which we had to wait 2 hrs. for. We loaded up the luggage cart, brought it to our room. The room was nice but the A/C was off, room very warm. There are no safes for valuables, those you need to leave at the front desk.

There is one elevator for the whole place.

The room had two nice/comfortable queen beds with a nice TV in one room, in the other was a love seat, TV, desk, chair, frige and microwave, all very clean. The bathroom was very clean but two sinks/large mirror are located outside the bathroom.

We drew a bath for the kids but tub would not drain afterwords, after three complaints and three days later, the maintenance guy finally got to it, he pulled out a large clump of hair. The twin sinks were also slow to drain.

We had repeated problems with the electronic door lock cards not working and we are well aware not to keep these cards next to a cell phone or other electronic devices, we learned that lesson in Disney World. After several requests and five days later, and having to replace our cards at least ten times, one girl pretty much blamed me for this, "we've never had that problem before, you muist be doing something wrong!" Well, there was a problem and it was the door lock assembly.

I had dropped my wallet which bounced along the bed frame, as I ran my had along the edge to locate it, my finger was pricked by a fragment of broken glass which was missed by the vacuum.

As we gave the babies their bath a half hour after first getting settled in, the room phone was ringing, the girl asked if we had the luggage cart, she told me I "had to bring it back down to the desk", I told her I'd be down in 10 minutes, she replied "well we need it now", she seemed a tad bit cranky.

The motel offers a very nice breakfast from 6:30 to 9AM with hot scrambled eggs with sausage chunks or ham, fresh wonderful coffee (which they ran out of often), fresh juice, three different cerials, milk and two nice waffle grills to make you're own waffles. The room is ample to fit maybe 25 people comfortably with aprox 6 or 7 small tables. I didn't like the fact (maybe not the motels fault but they didn't enforce this) some parents allowed their teenagers to walk barefoot or prepare their own meals, they made a mess! One kid came in barefoot and with no shirt. I said something but nothing as done about it.

There was usually fresh coffee available 24/7 for free when the cafe was closed. They also had cold soda and gatoraid, and some snacks and incidentals like razor blades, shave cream and fabric sofener. I inquired about laundry detergent, the girl handed me two zip lock baggies with what she said was Tide. I'm not to sure about that as I used it and itched like crazy afterwords (bring your own detergent). The laundry room was clean with two decent coin operated washers and driers.

The indoor pool and area was kind of small but was very clean and refreshing with a nice hot tub and sauna but was down the end of the hallway in the back, not really a big deal.

We had to constantly request extra towels from house keeping but every day they shorted us. Leave a big note near the coffee maker.

Two other girls who worked the front desk were awesome, extremely helpful, kind, knowlegable of the area, I wish I could mention their names, they deserve recognition, but they only worked one day while we were there in 6 nights.

Would I stay here again? Probably, It has a lot of plus' but they need to address some attitudes; the fact that they are short handed especially during peak season and a sold out motel and don't answer the phone in a timely manner, and they need to maintain their drains, AND DO A BETTER JOB VACUUMING ALONG THE EDGES OF THE BEDS, my granson could have been cut or swallowed that glass.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give this place a 6 or 7. If you came get a discount room rate, its worth it, but again get a GPS! Don't think that this place is near Sea World, that is a false claim and very misleading. Also, as od last week, you could not check or book reservations here through Comfort Inn/Suites website, they are, or were independent from corporate. I was told that was going to change. One good thing; we felt safe here and it was family friendly.

This was a great hotel with a good location and a very nice room. The problem came when we checked out and overlooked our video camera that was being stored between the bed and the wall in the bedroom area. When we reached our next destination and realized that neither one of us had picked up the camera from beside the bed we immediately called the hotel to see if they could locate it and hold it for us until we came back through SA a few days later. Unfortunately, "the room had just been cleaned and there was no camera bag in the room". The room was securely locked and both keys had been turned in to the front desk when we left. So draw your own conclusion.

“Great Value, Comfort”

Comfort Suites Near Seaworld

Wanted to stay closer to Sea World than we normally do and chose this hotel based on reviews and rating here. Usually stay a little more north, but for $20 more this was worth it. Very pleased with cleanliness and quality of hotel. Comfortable for family or 4. LOVED the door that separates the sleeping area from entry of room. Kids able to sleep while parent watches late nite TV. TWO TVs in room in case kids and parents (or mom and dad) don't want to watch same show. VERY convienent to Sea World. Breakfast was good, although could use some more seating in that area - many parents were standing. We will be returning.
