“Nice Hotel, lousy neighborhood”

Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk

The Drury Plaza Hotel is a very rare thing, a business that advertises itself as first class and absolutely delivers. Simply put, it's really a good deal, even if you use the $18/day parking.

The rooms and service are top notch. Great staff. The hotel is beautiful. It has a private entry to the riverwalk that is convenient and secure. The elevators are clean, quiet, and fast. The furnishings are high quality.

The free breakfast is good and plentiful, including pancakes, bagels, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, biscuits, gravy, hot and cold cereals, fruit juice and coffee, fresh fruit, and more. The Drury also provides happy hour, with drinks and snacks. Like I said, a really good deal.

My only complaint has to do with San Antonio, not the Drury Plaza hotel. The neighborhood around the hotel is in very bad condition.
There are derelicts hanging around the hotel, lots of vacant street-level space with grafitti, and long stretches of dark streets at night. We did not feel safe at times, but, you can avoid the streets by using the Riverwalk exit.

Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor, we booked a room at the Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk for a 4 July getaway at a really good price (hotel website - fully prepaid). This place met all our expectations. The lobby was pretty impressive. But most of all the service was friendly and helpful, and the rooms were huge! We got a room on the 9th floor and it was very clean, and very spacious. The bathroom was pretty luxurious too. The bed was soft and really comfortable. We had a king bed. I usually don't like flowery bedspreads and that almost put me off booking at the Drury Plaza. I'm glad I chose to follow the tripadvisor reviews! It was AWESOME.

The location was great too. There is a passage downstairs that leads you straight to the Riverwalk. It's on the quiet side and believe me, it is probably a good thing because it's more peaceful. We were there during a busy weekend and it would have been a mess to stay at the busy side of the Riverwalk, imho. In any case, it's closer to the Market Sq.

Service was great, they were friendly. I left a pair of earrings and the housekeeping went all out to help me find them. They are not expensive earrings but of great sentimental value. It was a busy weekend so the valet was overwhelmed. There was a line for the valet and breakfast but hey, that's to be expected for the 4th! There is parking next door but I liked being able to go straight from the car to the lobby, without having to walk down the street to the carpark.

All in all, Drury Plaza made our weekend getaway an amazing one!

“July 4th Stay with small children”

Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk

Jul 7, 2008
2/2 found this review helpful

My husband, two boys (20months and 7yo), and I stayed at the Drury Plaza July 2-6. We loved the hotel.
Location: We loved the location. It's very close to the main area of the riverwalk (though set back just about a block--which is nice). You can walk in one direction and reach the Alamo...walk the other and reach Market Square (we did both with two young kids--so I would not say either walk was bad). We could see some distant fireworks from our hotel room--I'm guessing even more could have been seen from on of the observation decks or the rooftop pool area.
Staff: The staff in every dept were amazing and very friendly (and this is saying a lot b/c several people staying were difficult to deal with). Excellent staff!! They should be commended.
Pools/hot tub/observation decks: There is a roof top pool--two hot tubs--it can be reached by access on the 22nd floor or directly from the 23rd(which with small children we prefered--fewer steps). The view was amazing--temperature prefect. We tried out the lower hot tub on the first night and loved it. There is also an indoor pool and hottub (although I did not see this listed on the website--I had read it on another post on tripadvisor). It rained off and on while we were there--so we did use the indoor pool one day. It's actually in a connecting tower--a bit of an easily traveled maze/couple of different elevators--but well posted. There are nice observation decks on both the hotel roof and the roof of the connecting tower--the tower deck is much roomier with nicer outdoor living furniture--but not as high up.
The room: we were in room 1801 (a 1bedroom suite--a corner room I believe)--we loved the view. the room and living area did feel a bit on the small side--but most downtown hotels in any area are. It had an interesting layout. It worked out well for us. Cleaned well. The only thing I did not like was no separate sink outside of the bathroom (with young kids that is always nice to have).
Breakfast: Good, free breakfast. The first couple of days we were there (Thursday/Friday mornings)--no waiting. However, that Sat and Sun morning were a different story--the line actually went out/down the hall toward the elevator. I'm guessing if you go down earlier--you might beat the crowd.
Evening reception--was nice--the have adult beverages/decent selection--as well as soda/lemonaid for the kiddos. Snacks included veggies, pretzels, popcorn, chex mix, goldfish crackers (which the kids loved), nachos. I saw a few people making a meal out of it. Once again--first night lower key---but Friday and Saturday night--there was a line (although not as long of a wait as breakfast).
My tips:
1. Avoid Sea World like the plaque on July 4th--I have no idea what we were thinking. Too crowded. Rude people abound--I felt so sorry for the SeaWorld staff. In the future, I'll avoid SeaWorld on all holiday weekends---and even the average weekend. The last time we went a few years ago--I think we went during the week--much better.
2. Dining: We ate out at several places. Here's the list and my take from our experiences:
Lonestar on the Riverwalk--nice, outside location---food not good, bad service.
Zushi Sushi--good food, average to bad service. This is right across the street from the hotel--so that was nice--and they do take out (which we did late one night) We dined in for lunch one afternoon. Dessert from there was yummy.
La Margarita (market square)--we went there before and I remember liking it--but did not enjoy it this time. Food was average. Tables crowded in. Service good.
Paesanos (riverwalk location): Excellent food. Good location. Although not super kid-friendly--they brought out the kids drinks in glass glasses--no lids/we were not given a kids menu--not sure that they had one--but they did have basic cheese pizza when we asked. Would recommend their speciality: Shrimp Paesano. This was one of my favorite places--just wish they would have had kid cups. Service was average/good.
Rita's on the River: we had bad service--bad food--crowded location. I would skip it all together.
Country Line (riverwalk location): good BBQ--I read reviews that it was a bit pricey and small portions. It is bit pricey for BBQ--but my husband and I split a meal (brisket/turkey combo) and the portion was fine to do so. I could not imagine a full meal myself--and my husband said the same. They had a kids menu--our kids shared one kids meal as well. That being said--it wasn't too pricey. Service was good from the waitress--but the host (seemed clueless--poor guy).
We ate at Seaworld for one meal.
3. Riverwalk--I love the San Antonio River walk. I did not find it to have easy access for strollers (I'm guessing that would transfer over to wheelchairs as well)--lots and lots of stairs--limited ramps and elevators (some out of order)--some stuff at street level--some riverwalk level--we had to carry the little umbrella stroller we had up and down several times--or unload--with one parent carrying the stroller and the other our son. With 4years and up--I would say this would not be an issue. Oklahoma City has a Riverwalk that has much better access.
There it is--the review and much, much more.

“Great Hotel, a lot for the Price”

We are checking out of the Drury this morning. This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. There is so much included in the price. The hotel is beautiful and is right on the riverwalk.
The morning breakfast is great and the free happy hour in the afternoon is a plus, but you are limited to three drinks and they are small drinks. Too bad they don't offer to sell extra drinks. We booked thru the hotel's website and we got a large room for 110.00 a night. Our only issue with the room was in the Alamo tower that faced the downtown area and the trash trucks run at 5:30 am, I was awakened to trash bins banging and the trucks reverse beeper going off. This was only one day on Friday and it was much more quiet on Saturday.

The staff is very friendly and helpful at every turn. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. My only complaint is for a hotel this size, they don't have an on site resturaunt or bar. It would be nice to have a place to just sit and relax and have a drink after a day of navigating the chaos on the riverwalk.

The hotel retained a lot of the old character of the original bank building. The lobby is beautiful. My wife could have sat for hours just looking at the details from days gone by. The parking is $18.00 a day, but comparable to any other close by parking and there is unlimited in/out where other garages charge for in/out. I think all the free amenities make up for the parking charge.

The hotel appears to pet friendly as we saw a lot of people with pets, there we even two birght guests who decided to bring their dogs to breakfast, which as far as I know is against health codes, but management quickly stepped in and advised the guests they could not have dogs in a food area.

Overall is was a great stay and we will return and look at using other Drury properties in the future.

I absolutely loved this hotel! It is not just a hotel. It is the Old Alamo Bank Building redone into a hotel-very unique. I am extremely picky about hotels-cleanliness in particular. The best thing about Drury Plaza is that you walk right out onto the riverwalk which we visited every evening. I also loved the fantastic breakfast each morning. We filled up each morning and was good for the day, snacking during the day until we ate on the river each night. The rooftop pool and hot water tub was so cool. The nightly snacks and drinks were great! The service and friendliness was fantastic. If you told them you needed your car for a certain time it was right there waiting. I just cannot say enough! It was amazing!
