We stayed at La Quinta for one night as a stopover between a 4 hour trip from Vegas and a day visiting the Grand Canyon. In general, we would agree with the vast majority of the reviews in that this is great value for money, and certainly not like other la Quintas, which are more like motels. This is a much classier hotel in a quiet location, but still very close to downtown Flagstaff.
The building is new and well maintained, rooms are finished to a high standard - with a smart business area and spotless bathroom. Our only qualm would probably be the pool, which was set in the middle of the property and in a very well looked after garden. The water, however, was far from clear and there were a couple of bugs floating around. It smelled strongly of chlorine and was far too warm, but this may be the norm in such a dry area. In any case, it was perfectly ok for sunbathing, relaxing and taking an occasional dip.
Breakfast was only average but free, which is a bonus. It had a pretty good selection of pastries, waffles, bacon and eggs. There was a reasonable range of fruit and juices, together with a couple of types of cereal and yoghourt. It is all served in plastic plates, cups and cutlery, which is slightly inappropriate given that the food is actually quite nice, but in general we can't complain.
The staff was helpful in giving us a map of Flagstaff and pointing out the best dining options. Try Black's Bart saloon, a typical Western place with John Wayne decor from the old days and dancing waiters/ressess. Above all that, they serve some of the best beef we ate in our entire trip. The food is down to earth but absolutely gorgeous. Nothing pretentious, but a superb experience.
Overall, the accommodation and the town were a perfect choice for a driving break. Highly recommended!
