“Can't wait to go back!”

I loved the Little America in Flagstaff. The rooms are spacious and incredibly clean. The pool are was relaxing. There's a lovely walk you can do around the hotel grounds where you can see deer and lots of other wildlife if you're quiet. And the diner/restaurant did lovely meals at a reasonable price. I hope they don't change anything about this hotel and I can't wait to go back. I posted some photos of our room earlier as a separate posting so check them out. We upgraded to a Deluxe King Suite and it was well worth the money however I can't compare it to the ordinary rooms as we didn't see them. The only downside I can remember to staying here is not wanting to leave (oh and the really back electric shocks you get every time you touch something!! so weird!)

Just spent three days at this gem of a hotel!
King suite only $116 per night! What a deal! One of the nicest suites we have ever encountered in our many travles. Magnificient views, 500 acres of Ponderose Pines, large pool, two great restaurants, suite almost 700 sq ft, and a great staff!
If you want a place to relax and enjoy clean fresh air with peace and tranquility thrown in for free, this is the place.
Next time we will stay longer!

“Great service, great value”

Right from the beginning the service was courteous and efficient. The room was very clean, large, and the furnishings were nice. The location was very pretty, forested, but right off the freeway, though no noise at all. The food at the restaurant was really good and reasonable and again the service was excellent. You can't walk to the downtown area from here but it is a short 5 minute drive away. The Grand Canyon is about 1-1.5 hours away but I would seriously consider staying here considering the options at the Canyon. I would definitely stay here again and wish more family oriented hotels were this nice.

“100 in-room movies, bright red carpeting & an aspen grove”

Little America Hotel and Towers

This is not your average motel. This large, 2 story, L-shaped motel, well located near but not on the Interstate and convenient to charming downtown Flagstaff could best be described as a nice 1950's nostalgia motel. The staff was very friendly and professional and accommodated an early arrival. We were put in a room that faced inward toward a little landscaped grove of aspens which we loved and which gave us quite a bit of privacy. The rooms are very spacious, but the decor is something else! Our room had a bright red rug (Christmas red), flamingo pink tiled bath, flowery bedspreads and walls and white glazed French provincial furniture!! My husband was a little put off, but I didn't mind.
The TV offered about 100 pay per view movies (more, if you count the adult movies) as well as a large cable TV selection. For us, this is one of the fun things about travelling, as we don't have cable at home. There is lots of closet and counter space and we ordered room service and found the food quite good, although not gourmet. I understand the restaurant serves a nice buffet lunch most days.
In general, I liked the place for its braveness in not conforming to the typical motel, but I have a few qualifiers: We booked a room with a balcony, but the banconies/patios could better be described as ledges. A sliding door opens onto a railed ledge about 16" wide at the most. You can't really even stand on it--just lean out for the view or to smoke. On the other hand, you can leave the sliding door open all night for the fresh, piney air without fear of someone entering the room from the balcony (upper floor only, obviously). There are no elevators. Half the rooms face outward toward a parking lot and very noisy street and have no view to speak of. I would definitely avoid these rooms; make sure you get one facing inward. I thought the low point was the bathrooms. They seemed not to have been updated since the 50s or 60s. There is a lot of difference between today's and yesterday's luxury bathroom standards and the rooms really showed their age here--seperate hot and cold taps rather than mixing valves, unimpressive water pressure, average sized tubs (advertised as oversize--maybe they were for the 50s). The pink tile looked like the original pink tile, kind of scratched and with some damaged mortar. And the cabinets were old ones "updated" by white paint. No qualms about the cleanliness of the place, but I think redoing the bathrooms with new everything, but with a 50s motif would improve the motel 100%. The bathroom itself is certainly large enough for a big soaking tub and walk in shower. My other gripe was with the bedspreads and pillows. The spreads weighed a ton; I had to practically wrestle them to the ground to use the bed. No one could actually sleep under one. I couldn't even lift it to fold it--had to leave it where it fell on the ground all night. I can't but help feel sorry for the maids. And, although there were several pillows, no combination of them seemed comfortable--too wimpy.
Even with its faults, this motel was far more interesting and pleasing than an average motel, and I recommend it, especially for someone who wants to experience a little nostalgia, as a break from average motels or for a short stay. I think it will be especially attractive to older ladies travelling in groups and I believe that some rooms open rather directly onto the pool area for those who are travelling with children who immediately want to take a dip. I recommend you call the motel directly and discuss the different room locations, what you want from a room (and don't want), and then book directly with the motel, as it is a rather large and spread out motel, and if you book on line there is no telling what you could get.

“Interesting”

And I thought hotels like this only existed in England ...

Stayed here with husband and two children in August. Not only did the weather remind us of home, it being their 'monsoon' season, but the hotel with it's genial atmosphere and dated furnishings did too! Having read some of the other reviews I am pleased to report that our room was clean, even though the carpet was marked and needed replacing. The outdoor area including the pool was lovely. We felt very safe. We ate breakfast at the hotel - very nice and had one evening meal there. Be careful to not to make the mistake of ordering your wine by the glass however. Get them to open the bottle at your table! We are not experts but even though my husband and I ordered two different wines, which should have been different colours, it was obvious that they tasted and looked exactly the same! The waitress never admitted her mistake but after we pointed out we knew what we should have had she did offer to replace them - too late!

Flagstaff has gone downhill since we last visited in 1991. The Grand Canyon is a natural wonder but it's a shame it has become so developed on the south rim. Walnut Creek Canyon on the other hand, just outside Flagstaff was peaceful and beautiful. Beware the local police - unfortunately on the first evening of our stay in Flagstaff my husband was pulled over for crossing a faded white line and considering some of the behaviour of the other drivers on the road with local plates we wondered whether having an expensive car with California plates was the real reason he was pulled over, especially when he asked whether my husband is a doctor because he sounds like one - what that had to do with crossing a white line and how a policeman in Arizona would know what a doctor visiting from the other side of the world would sound like puzzled us. The injustice of the system tarnished our opinion and enjoyment of Flagstaff - we couldn't put our case because we were leaving the country before our case we come up so had no option but to pay the $95 tourist tax. Well done Flagstaff for protecting your people! I'm glad our police here don't waste their resources in that way. Good sermon material though and an interesting story to tell at dinner parties! As people who have never been on the wrong side of the law, the whole experience came as quite a shock to us and for this reason we will never return to Flagstaff... in fact it was quite a relief to leave Arizona.
