This is not your average motel. This large, 2 story, L-shaped motel, well located near but not on the Interstate and convenient to charming downtown Flagstaff could best be described as a nice 1950's nostalgia motel. The staff was very friendly and professional and accommodated an early arrival. We were put in a room that faced inward toward a little landscaped grove of aspens which we loved and which gave us quite a bit of privacy. The rooms are very spacious, but the decor is something else! Our room had a bright red rug (Christmas red), flamingo pink tiled bath, flowery bedspreads and walls and white glazed French provincial furniture!! My husband was a little put off, but I didn't mind.
The TV offered about 100 pay per view movies (more, if you count the adult movies) as well as a large cable TV selection. For us, this is one of the fun things about travelling, as we don't have cable at home. There is lots of closet and counter space and we ordered room service and found the food quite good, although not gourmet. I understand the restaurant serves a nice buffet lunch most days.
In general, I liked the place for its braveness in not conforming to the typical motel, but I have a few qualifiers: We booked a room with a balcony, but the banconies/patios could better be described as ledges. A sliding door opens onto a railed ledge about 16" wide at the most. You can't really even stand on it--just lean out for the view or to smoke. On the other hand, you can leave the sliding door open all night for the fresh, piney air without fear of someone entering the room from the balcony (upper floor only, obviously). There are no elevators. Half the rooms face outward toward a parking lot and very noisy street and have no view to speak of. I would definitely avoid these rooms; make sure you get one facing inward. I thought the low point was the bathrooms. They seemed not to have been updated since the 50s or 60s. There is a lot of difference between today's and yesterday's luxury bathroom standards and the rooms really showed their age here--seperate hot and cold taps rather than mixing valves, unimpressive water pressure, average sized tubs (advertised as oversize--maybe they were for the 50s). The pink tile looked like the original pink tile, kind of scratched and with some damaged mortar. And the cabinets were old ones "updated" by white paint. No qualms about the cleanliness of the place, but I think redoing the bathrooms with new everything, but with a 50s motif would improve the motel 100%. The bathroom itself is certainly large enough for a big soaking tub and walk in shower. My other gripe was with the bedspreads and pillows. The spreads weighed a ton; I had to practically wrestle them to the ground to use the bed. No one could actually sleep under one. I couldn't even lift it to fold it--had to leave it where it fell on the ground all night. I can't but help feel sorry for the maids. And, although there were several pillows, no combination of them seemed comfortable--too wimpy.
Even with its faults, this motel was far more interesting and pleasing than an average motel, and I recommend it, especially for someone who wants to experience a little nostalgia, as a break from average motels or for a short stay. I think it will be especially attractive to older ladies travelling in groups and I believe that some rooms open rather directly onto the pool area for those who are travelling with children who immediately want to take a dip. I recommend you call the motel directly and discuss the different room locations, what you want from a room (and don't want), and then book directly with the motel, as it is a rather large and spread out motel, and if you book on line there is no telling what you could get.
