After arriving in a tropical storm things could only get better!
Wrong.... we had no hot water for 36 hours. Despite this I would still recommend this hotel.
You don't really find out how good a company/hotel is until things go wrong and the Management here (Jean -Paul especially) did their utmost to correct the situation. The water went from cold to tepid to bearable to hot over the course of the 36 hours with lots of apologies along the way.
On waking up on the second day we found it raining again but this was intermittent and when the sun came through it was extremely strong and we noted other people who were burnt the following day. The weather we were told was highly unusual and to be fair did improve over the next week and we all came back with a healthy colour.
Our kids (10,7 and 2) decided the kids club wasn’t for them but there was plenty for them to do around the resort and the staff were all more than helpful in the sports complex. The resort is top class and one of the best looking resorts we have stayed in.
Everything is very well laid out and clean and the Spa has to be seen to be believed.
Most of the staff were very attentive but there were a few (especially round the main pool) that needed a kick up the [--] .
The hotel has everything priced in Euros so you will not need to take too much local currency unless you intend going out a lot. My wife and eldest son, 10, both highly praised the Spa.
We chose a clubroom which had an extra bedroom for the children, this was spacious and comfortable overlooking the beach and not far from the restaurants and pool, room 1004 for those interested.
We paid the extra for their Club facilities but to be honest I don’t think it was worth it, maybe if we were drinkers it would be worthwhile although we did enjoy the pool and the environment. The kids also enjoyed feeding the birds the cakes that were available, not sure if the guys there approved but the kids liked it! The pool at the club was pretty cold so we only went in once to cool down on one of the hotter days. The club has one of the restaurants situated there; the food was good although after the second week could have done with a bit more choice.
The buffet arrangement was not to our taste and forced us to eat in the Club restaurant at a supplement more times than we would have preferred. The kids meals lacked variety only 5 dishes to choose from each night and the same menu was for lunch as well so they lived on chicken nuggets and pizza, but to be fair the nuggets were breaded chicken breast strips and the pizza’s were top notch as were their French fries.
The beach was great and we walked to the left of the hotel for about 45 minutes and found some great rock pools with hundreds of fish in, to the right (facing the sea) is ok as well but to the left we found more shells and wild life.
Beware of the sea anemones as a couple of people had spikes go through their shoes and embed themselves in their feet, live as well as dead ones are very dangerous for this reason so be careful when walking through the lapping waves.
Snorkelling is great for beginners and experienced alike but it is VERY shallow at low tide a number of people had grazes to show for it. No big stuff to see unless you went out on a boat, but enjoyable none the less.
The boys, 10 and 7 enjoyed the arcade at night and the security at the hotel made us feel safe letting them roam around. The entertainment was OK, the usual, African dancers and local singers, some nights better than others but we enjoyed the company of people we met and treated it as background music.
I strongly believe this could be made into one of the best hotel/spa resorts in Mauritius, if they spent some time at the Residence and see how they do it, regarding food and attention to the smaller details they will go far.
The buffet is the only thing that would stop me going back.Still managed to put on 5lbs though!!
