After arriving in a tropical storm things could only get better!
Wrong.... we had no hot water for 36 hours. Despite this I would still recommend this hotel.
You don't really find out how good a company/hotel is until things go wrong and the Management here (Jean -Paul especially) did their utmost to correct the situation. The water went from cold to tepid to bearable to hot over the course of the 36 hours with lots of apologies along the way.
On waking up on the second day we found it raining again but this was intermittent and when the sun came through it was extremely strong and we noted other people who were burnt the following day. The weather we were told was highly unusual and to be fair did improve over the next week and we all came back with a healthy colour.
Our kids (10,7 and 2) decided the kids club wasn’t for them but there was plenty for them to do around the resort and the staff were all more than helpful in the sports complex. The resort is top class and one of the best looking resorts we have stayed in.
Everything is very well laid out and clean and the Spa has to be seen to be believed.
Most of the staff were very attentive but there were a few (especially round the main pool) that needed a kick up the [--] .
The hotel has everything priced in Euros so you will not need to take too much local currency unless you intend going out a lot. My wife and eldest son, 10, both highly praised the Spa.
We chose a clubroom which had an extra bedroom for the children, this was spacious and comfortable overlooking the beach and not far from the restaurants and pool, room 1004 for those interested.
We paid the extra for their Club facilities but to be honest I don’t think it was worth it, maybe if we were drinkers it would be worthwhile although we did enjoy the pool and the environment. The kids also enjoyed feeding the birds the cakes that were available, not sure if the guys there approved but the kids liked it! The pool at the club was pretty cold so we only went in once to cool down on one of the hotter days. The club has one of the restaurants situated there; the food was good although after the second week could have done with a bit more choice.
The buffet arrangement was not to our taste and forced us to eat in the Club restaurant at a supplement more times than we would have preferred. The kids meals lacked variety only 5 dishes to choose from each night and the same menu was for lunch as well so they lived on chicken nuggets and pizza, but to be fair the nuggets were breaded chicken breast strips and the pizza’s were top notch as were their French fries.
The beach was great and we walked to the left of the hotel for about 45 minutes and found some great rock pools with hundreds of fish in, to the right (facing the sea) is ok as well but to the left we found more shells and wild life.
Beware of the sea anemones as a couple of people had spikes go through their shoes and embed themselves in their feet, live as well as dead ones are very dangerous for this reason so be careful when walking through the lapping waves.
Snorkelling is great for beginners and experienced alike but it is VERY shallow at low tide a number of people had grazes to show for it. No big stuff to see unless you went out on a boat, but enjoyable none the less.
The boys, 10 and 7 enjoyed the arcade at night and the security at the hotel made us feel safe letting them roam around. The entertainment was OK, the usual, African dancers and local singers, some nights better than others but we enjoyed the company of people we met and treated it as background music.
I strongly believe this could be made into one of the best hotel/spa resorts in Mauritius, if they spent some time at the Residence and see how they do it, regarding food and attention to the smaller details they will go far.
The buffet is the only thing that would stop me going back.Still managed to put on 5lbs though!!

“Fantastic Service”

Moevenpick Resort and Spa Mauritius

We have stayed at this hotel now three times over the last twelve months and also had our wedding there. The service and the staff are fantastic and it is a lovely getaway with fantastic scenery in a National Park. It is quiet (which suits us) so not suitable if you are a night owl looking for night life. Good for honeymooners!

The only slightly diappointing area is the main dinning which is now a buffet every evening but in different styles. (It became a bit "samey" after a while.) There is the choice of two other restaurants. We tried the fine dining a couple of times which although there is any extra cost is well worth the extra.

The rooms are really nice with a shower and a large sunken double bath and the standard of cleaning very good. We always use the laundry facilities which are quick (back the same day) which for us is a luxury not having to iron before we go!

The staff are always pleased to see us when we return and often surprise us with the odd glass of "bubbly". We love their sunny nature.

“Fantastic enclosure, still room to improve”

Moevenpick Resort and Spa Mauritius

As a young couple we wanted to find a romantic getaway and a base for our trips around the island. The location of the hotel is excellent: very quite and traditional surroundings where you can still see the traditional mauritius in some villages, plus deserted beaches, etc. all the opposite from the crowded north and east.

The hotel itself and the services are very good: well planned, a lot of space, decent restaurant, proper beaches with snorkeling possibilities... the rooms are very nice, comfortable, huge, and the round bathtub in every room is a premium add-on for a hotel this price category. The views from the main hall at sunset are just unforgettable.

What prevents it from being top in its class? Basically that despite the efforts and enthusiasm of its staff, there is some level of disorganisation and mismanagement. Just a few examples: The restaurant is à la carte, but as there was a very noisy group half of the stay, it was converted to a buffet, which is OK for a group in a resort hotel, but unacceptable to others looking for 5-star service (you will never find buffets in real 5-stars beside breakfast). I can't understand why they couldn't keep the buffet for the group and the normal service for the rest.

Also the seating policy on the restaurant was a bit strange: some sections were closed with no advertising, so every day there was some incidents when people had to change their table, sometimes while eating already

Besides, I would recommend this hotel to anyone as the experience did pay-off, given the good facilities and location. If it could just improve a bit, it would be perfect.

“very nice place, but could improve on some things”

We stayed at the Movenpick for two weeks.

The Movenpick is a lovely hotel, the complex is well maintained, staff are friendly and the rooms are great. The scenery is great. The place and is calm and great for a relaxing holidays.
As Mauritius is small, you can explore the island from there, by hire car or public transports (buses are frequent and cheap and take you everywhere).

A relatively big let down is the food. After a few days the buffet becomes very much the same and both the quality of the food and the choice could be improved.

The spa complex is ok, but not a revelation.

Rooms are very big all sea view, with a very nice bath (in other hotels they offer you as a suite).Garden, pools and beach veryclean. And dont forget too bring this especial shoes to walk at the beach, every day we make long walkings collecting shells:) from 11 nights we only make 2 excursions one was the catamaran dolphin watch (I recomended) and the other to Port Louis, criolle lunch at Moka and Pampelmouse Gardens was very interesting but too long really we prefer to stay at the Hotel and relax and enjoy the see.If you are looking for a family or couple vacation with firstclass service and first class accomodation in a very special place I mean RELAX this is the place.
