This was our 2nd time to Jamaica in the last 4 years. We stayed at the Ritz in MB last time and liked it, but decided to try something else this time. The Rtiz is a 4-5 star, Pebbles is a 2-3 star (some big differences). First of all, do your homework about this resort before you go. (Read as many reviews as you can before you go). This is a place for families and children. The resort is very mellow in curbside appeal- not fancy at all, but good enough. It is fairly inexpensive for what you get (you get what you pay for, with the exception of the Nanny) (If she is good- your trip will be worth it no matter what) The resort is known for the nanny service which is included in your package price. You are expected to have your Nanny everyday from 9-4:40 pm everyday you are there. She has a few breaks and then you have the option to use her after hours to go out to dinner. She straightens up your room, stocks your fridge with fruit, cheese, fruit loops, crackers, beer and sodas. You can hang out with her and your kids, or let your kids do what they want with her while you are off napping, sunning yourself, eating, etc.
I will try to sum up our week (5 nights/ 6 days) as best as I can.
We have 2 kids 3.5 years and 5.5 years old and I am over 7 months pregnant (this was our last trip as a family of 4).
I requested a Nanny named Kimberly Williams, who was the reason this trip ended up being good (23 years old, responsible and good natured). DO YOUR RESARCH! You would probably not let your kids go with just anyone at home- so why do it in a 3rd world country. I was afraid of getting a "bad " nanny after all the reviews I read. I requested her and thankfully she was availiable. The nannies work based on tenure and requests. Our nanny was there 2 years, some have been there as many as 6 years. Our nanny told us that there has been really slow periods she hasn't worked for a month or more. They make NOTHING! I think $50 a week PLUS the tips you give them at the end of the week. We gave our Nanny $120 as a tip because of everything she did with our kids and how much they liked her.
DO NOT GO TO FDR PEBBLES FOR THE FOOD. Some things are Ok to eat, other things are really bad. Some of the fish and meats were great. There are 4 places to eat, 2 of which are only open1 or 2 times during the week (an Italian restaurant and a Jamaican restaurant). The grill restaturant is a swim up to or sit down restaurant open from 10:30sih- 10 ish at night. You can get burgers, fries, sandwiches etc. whenever you want. We found to the food to be pretty awful (at the grill quality wise- but the kids loved the grilled cheese, etc. You will find things you like on the buffet that is served breakfast 7:30-10:30, lunch 12:30=2:30 and dinner 6:30- 8:30. We were always the early birds to eat with the kids. Coffee is brewed by 7am in the main restaurant everyday, so I would go down to get it and request a little metal coffee pot. to take to my room. (Sometimes the staff gave me an attitiude, sometimes not) If you have not been to Jamaica before, you may love the people, or not.
Most of the staff at the resort is very nice. The grounds are very clean and cared for. The rooms are a little tired, but efficent for you and your kids. Request a room upgrade with a water view if you check in and it is slow. It is well worth it. BRING BUG SPRAY. At night around 6p, mosquitoes and other bugs start coming around. They fog the property at night to kill some off, but others will get in your room at night. SPRAY YOURSELF B/F bed and you should be fine. Some kids were covered in bites while we were there.
If you go to Pebbles during a slow time (not school vacation week, or holidays) there is a lot less to do for the kids. They don't plan as many acitivities for the nannies to take the kids to. Our kids did rock painting, tie dying shirts, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, etc. They were really content hanging in the pool and going down the water slide with life jackets on. I saw a lot of nannies get in the pool with the kids (the deepest part is 4'6''.
We saw all age kids with nannies 2 months- 12 years old perfectly happy. The rainy times of day are fine for the kids- they hang out and do arts and crafts, etc. There isn't too much for the adults to do if it rains, but thank god for the nannies.
I would recommend this resort if you set the right expectations before you go. I read all the "bad" reviews too and realized when I was there that some of those people probably aren't happy anywhere. Go with a positive attitude and your family should have a great time.
