“Not a Lavish Resort but......”

Starfish Trelawny Resort & Spa

The reason we were at this resort is because we attended a wedding and extended it into a vacation. Prior to making reservations, I researched the Starfish website and the reviews here on trip advisor and I knew that I would not have picked this place for a vacation had it not been the site of the wedding. We were offered marijuana, but that started at the airport. FYI - don't accept (not that I would have), but saw on television report once that it is sometimes a setup.

CONS: Checking into the resort is an issue because there is rarely more than one person at the front desk. We were suppose to have a mountain view room, but our room overlooked the entry shack of the employees, but it really wasn't a big deal because we didn't spend that much time in the room. The rooms are clean, but need some TLC and upgrading of its furniture and the mattress was very hard. Apparently they don't believe in giving you face towels because we had to call for them daily. The buffet food was just food......you could find something that you would eat to stop from being hungry. As the meals progressed from Breakfast to Lunch to Dinner, they did get a little better. On the night before our departure, we requested a wakeup call so that we would be up in time to eat breakfast and catch our shutle to the airport - luckily we woke early enough on our own because that call never came.

PROS:
Drinks are plentiful and strong. Japanese, Italian & Steak House restaurants are excellent and economical. Food provided at the reception for the wedding was excellent (can't be the same cooks from the buffet) If you have children (we don't), they will be thoroughly entertained and happy as there is so much for them to do and the children didn't seem to be in the way or overbearing. Not having to tip every simple act is refreshing. Transportation for excursions were the only time we tipped and the driver's were always deserving. Did not expereince any harassment of time share pitches that we have experienced in other islands.

BOTTOM LINE: This is by no means a luxury resort. It is economical, and a great place to bring your children.

This resort was fantastic! I can not wait to go back again. We happened to spend one night in another all inclusive during our stay and it cemented our desire to return to the starfish. The rooms are ok but that's not why most people go to Jamaica. The beaches are GREAT! Yes there are a few locals that approach you but they are nice enough and take no for an answer. Plus there is security. The island is great too. The pools are great. The disco is great. The best part of the stay the entertainment staff!!! The entire staff is great but the entertainment staff especially. The offer games, dancing, competitions, shows. You can get involved or just watch. I reccomend getting involved. The staff becomes part of your family. The other guests we met were friendly and we ended up meeting some great people. The food was ok. This is a resort for people looking to live it up. Very family friendly and very friends friendly. We saw a few honeymooners but the majority was family and friends. Everynight they have a different theme, casino night, circus night, kareoke night. This is great for a girlfriend get away. All inclusive at this resort means all inclusive. The only thing you need to pay for is gifts and extra excursions. We tipped the airport transportation drivers and any taxi drivers we used. That was it. This place gets an A+. The price is outstanding. Worth every penny. If you get involved you may even win a bottle of Jamaican rum or 2 or 8....

“Great Time at the Starfish!”

Our group of 24 stayed at the Starfish from July 14-18 and it was one of the best vacations ever. No one was ready to go home. From the time we arrived at the airport and were pre-checked in at the Super Clubs lounge, to our arrival at the resort was smooth sailing. We communicated in advance with Starfish, so they were very prepared for us. Thanks so much to Jenny, who gave us the rooms we requested and Christie for her help with our birthday party! The rooms were clean and there was a problem with facecloths and towels, but we called or went to the front desk and got them. We all brought our own beach towels, so "No problem Mon!" The food was good, especially the breakfast buffet and there was always something to eat. We arranged our own transportation with Wentworth Tours, who took us to Dunns River Falls one day and shopping in Montego Bay the next day. He made stops along the way to show us points of interest or to taste the different fruits being sold by road side vendors. We stayed on the beach and the private island most of the time, so if your kids couldn't get the round floats for the BIG kids hogging them, it was us. When we were approached to buy something "special" or anything else, a polite no thank you and we were not bothered again. The staff was great, very friendly and always helpful. We brought school supplies and left them with the staff members that made our stay enjoyable. We also went across the road to the "hole in the wall" and had a great time dancing, drinking and playing dominoes. They even gave us aloe vero juice for the mosquito bites. I can go on forever about our trip to Jamaica. Starfish is a great resort for the money and your vacation is what you make it. Thanks so much to Peter, Suzzane, Christie, Jenny and all the others. We will be back!

Wonderful Food, something for everyone, all day any time of day you can eat and drink. This is a family resort with a beautiful beach.
I would return, we had a very good time. Shortage of Beach towels, so do not give over towel for card as the next day you may be towel-less, They were having laundry problems when we were there. No internet for the week, which I was fine with, if you are not fine with that then bring your laptop. I asked for an extra pillow and it never did arrive but we managed. If you would like to do some laundry when away bring some tide with you. Overall we were very happy and had a great time.

“You get what you pay for!”

Starfish Trelawny Resort & Spa

When I booked my stay at the Starfish which is a 31/2 star hotel on many websites I visited, I expected certain things. When my sister and I arrived at the Starfish we received a few surprises. Don't get me wrong the landscape and many amenities were nice. The pool, hot tubs, and the beach were the highlights of my trip. The food was good and there was a decent variety for anyone who has certain food preferences or restrictions.

The problem I had was room we stayed in. Please understand when you go to tropical climates and stay in hotel rooms there, condensation may occur so the air conditioner had to stay on for the majority of the trip or the room would become damp, However, from the moment we walked in, the room smelled musty, and the sheets on the two beds were smelly as well. They did not smell washed or fresh, but rather smelled like someone had been sleeping on them for a few weeks. When I asked the front desk clerk for fresh sheets she said she would have housekeeping "freshen them up". I am assuming she meant put new sheets on. So when I went to the room and smelled the sheets and they didn't smell any different I was very dissappointed. I am not sure if it was the sheets of the pillow cases but either was it was not acceptable

Although the staff was friendly and polite it normally took an average of 2-3 calls to the front desk or a visit to the front desk before we could get certain items attended to (i.e. TV repair, fresh sheets, clean towels). There are many things that I know are not in the control of the hotel such as maintenance issues or mechanical breakdowns but Starfish could have handled them in a more timely manner.

On on occasion I asked for a set of towels at the front desk at about 12:30 pm because we did not have enough towels to begin with. They took down my room number and said it would be attended to. We returned from the beach at about 5:30 pm: no towels. We called the front desk and was told in a few minutes. 45 minutes later we called housekeeping who said they were waiting on towels. At 7:45 pm we finally received our towels to shower and go to dinner. It's a good thing I brought my own facecloth to use since there weren't any in our room when we got there. I also brought my own beach towels which came in handy as well because the majority of the time there weren't any clean beach towels available and I mean I gave them at least 3-4 hour intervals at times and when I went back there were still no towels.

We were supposed to have a mini bar included in the all-inclusive price but in the room the prices were all listed. Some guests were told by our airline rep to ignore the prices but not everyone was given that information.

To end on a positive note, the beach was nice and the pool closest to the hotel was not as busy as the one closer to the beach so we hung out there. This hotel is family friendly so be aware of that (lots of kids), but the kids were not really an issue. The dining hall staff were excellent; thanks to them. If you are looking for a more economically priced hotel them Starfish may be an option for you, but if you are looking to be pampered and for luxury then you may not want to stay here.
