I visited the Rasa Sayang for a 2 week stay july 1 2008- july 15 2008, with my wife and sixteen year old son. We stayed in the Rasa wing and had a deluxe room on the ground floor which meant we had our own garden. I have visited Penang on many occasions including the last 4 years in a row but this was our first time in the Rasa and i can only say this was a completely different holiday, i just did not want to leave the hotel, there was no need. My 16 year old is very reluctant to holiday with his parents but he enjoyed the experience so much that he cannot wait to go back even with his embarrassing parents. We played golf, jet skied, fished, went to the gym had foot massages on the beach. It was great.
It was the personal things that made it special, arriving back from shopping at afternoon tea time and the doorman taking our shopping to our room so that we could go straight to the lounge etc.
When we first arrived at the hotel at about 10pm in an airport taxi, the doorman opened the taxi door and greeted us by name, OK maybe it was late and we were the last guests to arrive that day and he worked out from the schedule what our name was I don't know but it was very nice to be expected.
My daughter had been away from home for a number of months backpacking in Australia and she traveled to Penang with her boyfriend to be with us however they were staying in another hotel, the lone pine, so when we checked there was a letter waiting for me from her to say she called to the hotel and as I had not arrived yet left her room number and the lone pines phone number, I asked reception to use a phone whilst checking in to call her and the receptionist immediately called the lone pine and got my daughter on the phone for me and we arranged for her to come over. We were then given a welcome drink in the Rasa Lounge before being shown to our room and imagine my surprise and delight to find my daughter had been whisked through the gardens and into our private garden and when i opened the patio door to look out I can tell you there was a few tears of joy. This was beyond what anyone might expect from a 5 star hotel, it was these personal things, I really felt valued and special throughout my stay. This special feeling was throughout the hotel not just in the Rasa wing as when we went to the garden wing pool it was the same.
I have read some of the comments on the afternoon tea and canapes etc.I only went for these a couple times during my 2 weeks but found there to be loads to eat and as much as you wanted to drink, i spoke to one guest who told me had drunk 5 cocktails during the cocktail hour.
The evening buffets in the Spice Market restaurant were excellent and tremendous value for money.
The Chi although expensive was superb and we made 3 trips there. I miss the massage in the hotel gardens that used to be available there and at Golden Sands, the next door sister hotel and imagine they have been discontinued to drive revenue through the Chi spa however as the Chi was always booked out everyday I think the hotel should re-review this position.
Cant really think of a negative, going back for Christmas hopefully.
