“cant wait to return”

Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa

Jul 20, 2008

I visited the Rasa Sayang for a 2 week stay july 1 2008- july 15 2008, with my wife and sixteen year old son. We stayed in the Rasa wing and had a deluxe room on the ground floor which meant we had our own garden. I have visited Penang on many occasions including the last 4 years in a row but this was our first time in the Rasa and i can only say this was a completely different holiday, i just did not want to leave the hotel, there was no need. My 16 year old is very reluctant to holiday with his parents but he enjoyed the experience so much that he cannot wait to go back even with his embarrassing parents. We played golf, jet skied, fished, went to the gym had foot massages on the beach. It was great.
It was the personal things that made it special, arriving back from shopping at afternoon tea time and the doorman taking our shopping to our room so that we could go straight to the lounge etc.
When we first arrived at the hotel at about 10pm in an airport taxi, the doorman opened the taxi door and greeted us by name, OK maybe it was late and we were the last guests to arrive that day and he worked out from the schedule what our name was I don't know but it was very nice to be expected.
My daughter had been away from home for a number of months backpacking in Australia and she traveled to Penang with her boyfriend to be with us however they were staying in another hotel, the lone pine, so when we checked there was a letter waiting for me from her to say she called to the hotel and as I had not arrived yet left her room number and the lone pines phone number, I asked reception to use a phone whilst checking in to call her and the receptionist immediately called the lone pine and got my daughter on the phone for me and we arranged for her to come over. We were then given a welcome drink in the Rasa Lounge before being shown to our room and imagine my surprise and delight to find my daughter had been whisked through the gardens and into our private garden and when i opened the patio door to look out I can tell you there was a few tears of joy. This was beyond what anyone might expect from a 5 star hotel, it was these personal things, I really felt valued and special throughout my stay. This special feeling was throughout the hotel not just in the Rasa wing as when we went to the garden wing pool it was the same.
I have read some of the comments on the afternoon tea and canapes etc.I only went for these a couple times during my 2 weeks but found there to be loads to eat and as much as you wanted to drink, i spoke to one guest who told me had drunk 5 cocktails during the cocktail hour.
The evening buffets in the Spice Market restaurant were excellent and tremendous value for money.
The Chi although expensive was superb and we made 3 trips there. I miss the massage in the hotel gardens that used to be available there and at Golden Sands, the next door sister hotel and imagine they have been discontinued to drive revenue through the Chi spa however as the Chi was always booked out everyday I think the hotel should re-review this position.

Cant really think of a negative, going back for Christmas hopefully.

“A little disappointing”

Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa

Jul 17, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Rasa Sayang for five nights recently and whilst it has a number of luxury features, we would not be rushing back. The Rasa Wing is cerainly worth the extra $$ - if you want to use the very nice Rasa Wing pool (no children being a particular attraction), although it was disappointing that massages by the pool (so common in Bali) are not available. It is a pity that the beach is not more appealing. The 'cocktail hour' between 6-7pm had the staff rushed off their feet and it was difficult to find a seat on a couple of nights. You are allowed ONE small plate of 'nibbles' and on the one occasion that we asked for another serve, we were told NO. The Deluxe rooms are similar in size and layout to the hillside rooms - but at least you do not look out onto traffic. The Spa is very good - although not cheap. Service at breakfast was not great - cold toast was the norm - and service was unorganised. We had money stolen from our room - so keep your wallet locked away. Overall, if a luxury beach holiday is what you are after - for the price - there are better options in Asia.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the refurbished Rasa Sayang Hotel in Penang. Service was excellent throughout our stay.
However, true gem of this resort is their CHI Spa. It is a must-try indulgence for all! The entire spa layout resembles a Zen-like Japanese garden. Another favourite of mine is their Spice Market Cafe - where delicious Penang food is cooked right in front of your eyes! Will definitely go back again !

“Great!”

We recently stayed for 6 nights at the Rasa. We had upgraded to the Rasa Wing and it was well worth the money. Excellent breakfasts in the Ferrenghi Grill both a la carte and buffet style. Waited on hand and foot! The pool service was great, and the fact that no children were allowed. The staff were constantly bringing round cold drinking water and fresh fruit kebabs! Always very polite and would stop and chat but only if you wanted to! Afternoon tea was great with a choice of teas and then the little cake stands with goodies on it. Evening cocktails was well worth attending and every type of drink imaginable was available including champagne, Glasses were constantly refilled without even having to ask. Whilst we were there drinks were only available between 6 and 7, it had been reduced to one hour, but still very enjoyable. Whilst in the lounge there is free wifi access and they also have laptops available for you to use.

It was my birthday and anniversary whilst we were there and the hotel presented me with a beautiful birthday cake and an amazing anninversay cake (photos to follow!) That night we ate in the ferringhi grill and the food was divine! The steak was so tender. It was a bit more expensive than we would pay at home but what do you expect when you stay at a 5 star hotel, and I have certainly paid more for a meal in this country. You do not stay in this standard of hotel and expect to pay pie and chip prices!

All in all a fantastic place to stay.

Stayed here for seven nights in november.
This has to be one of the nicest hotels i have ever stayed in. The service is excellent as are the rooms and the pool areas are magnificent. Sit round the pool and you stick a flag on the ground
next to your sunbed and a man on a bike comes and takes your order its brill.
Even though it is quite expensive i believe its worth every penny and would thourghly recomend it.
