My wife and I stayed at Icons for seven nights during the first week of August 2006. The resort is amazing and we would both highly recommend it to anyone.
We arrived early morning, probably by 7:30am, and the resort had someone meet us at the top of the hill to carry our bags down. This was very nice because as a previous person mentioned, it's not super easy to find the hotel if you don't know where you're going and lugging your bags around wouldn't be too fun either. They then gave us breakfast at the restaurant because our room wasn't ready at that point. They gave us the full breakfast even though we didn't check in until that day, but they didn't charge us any extra for that day's meal. The service was very nice, although I personally thought it was a little too nice. The guy helping us kept saying 'at your service' every time he brought us something. My wife loved it and thought it was cute, I thought it was a little over-the-top. Our room was ready by 8:30am, which I thought was great since I think check-in is typically noon.
We stayed in room 25, which we thought was a fantastic room. It’s a corner room, so the private terrace really is more private. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the private terrace is somewhat misleading at Icons. Every room has two personal sun lounge chairs, two regular chairs and a small table, but they are all on common area. For instance, if you look at one of the pictures we posted, you’ll see six lounge chairs in a row, those are the personal chairs for rooms 22-24. So, it’s not really private. However, there are rooms, like 25, 21, 36 and other that have more private areas.
As mentioned by previous reviewers, the rooms are very minimalist, but nice. The TV’s are nice flat screens, but there is only one English speaking channel…CNN International. We didn’t watch much TV, but the satellite only worked 75% of the time I tried to use the TV. There is a nice CD player in the room, and my wife and I spent most afternoons with our windows open and playing music so we could listen while we were laying in the sun.
The breakfast at the resort was amazing. Everyday you fill out your order form for the following morning and they bring your food to your door and set it up for you on your private table outside. We loved that time each morning. They have a full breakfast: eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, fruit, various fruit juices and various coffees. You can order as much as you want and it’s pretty much all included. There are some specialty items that cost extra, but we never ordered them and our breakfasts were amazing. We only ordered lunch one time, but the service and the food were good.
We didn’t eat at the restaurant for dinner because there were so many restaurants around and we wanted to try new places. We highly recommend Remvi and Vanilia, both in Firostephani, about a 10 minute walk from Icons. Both restaurants have great sunset views, good menus and nice wine lists. We also ate at Blue Note, further north from Icons, which was good and Skaros, which is right by Icons and very reasonably priced but only mediocre food…although the Grandma’s Salad was amazing.
The pool at Icons was great. We spent one whole afternoon lounging around the pool area, drinking and talking with some fellow Americans we met there. The bar service was great, although we did drink them out of Mojitos that afternoon. I think given that there are only 24 rooms, I’m sure they aren’t fully loaded on mint leaves, etc. for six people to drink mojitos an entire afternoon, so I didn’t hold that against them.
The only negative experience we had at the hotel was over a couple day period when the Princess of Morocco stayed at the hotel. The group/entourage traveling with her was very friendly, and we had no issues with them, but they definitely monopolized the service at the resort, and for those two days, we did feel like the resort was 100% committed to catering to the Princess and not the rest of the guests. Although honestly, in hindsight, it wasn’t really that big of a deal. The biggest inconvenience to me was they didn’t have all the ingredients to make me a club sandwich for lunch one day and I had to walk up to Imeroviglo for lunch, which ended up being really good anyway.
One thing people should know is there are no showers, at least there wasn’t in our room or the rooms of people we met. There is a wand that you can use to bathe, and my wife ended up enjoying taking a bath everyday, but it did take a couple days to get used to not just having a shower.
All in all, we had an amazing time. The resort, the staff, the views, everything really, was perfect. It is an expensive resort, and as a previous reviewer mentioned, there are many nearby resorts and you can often wonder if you would have had just as an amazing trip staying at one of them for less money. I don’t know whether that’s true or not, but what I know is we had an incredible vacation and I don’t feel like I wasted money by staying at Icons. We would recommend to anyone.
