After reading the negatives, I was so curious that I emailed someone on another website to ask what they thought and how this compared to other Ritz Carltons. It seems there was nothing to worry about for my trip!
To preface, Jamaica is wonderful, but Montego bay is not the most beautiful part. It's just nice and the closest resort area to the airport. This makes it perfect for shorter trips or trips where you truly don't want to leave the resort at all. Adding to this, the beach at the Ritz is not very long, there is a decent sized wide expanse of beach with lots of chairs, along with narrow landscaped areas that are still definately ocean front, just not on sand, again with lots of chairs and plenty of areas for privacy.
There is an office right in the arrivals hall of Montego Bay airport so check in is a breeze. The shuttle to the hotel runs every 1/2 hour and the trip is 10-15 minutes. I was upgraded to a private car at no extra charge.
The hotel is spread out, you can either face east towards the ocean and the construction of a huge residential complex, north which looks at the resort landscaping with minor ocean views if you are on an upper floor, or west which looks at landscaping, villas and the ocean. The rooms are average size, with a 32" LCD, with a bigger than average bathroom with Bulgari toiletries. I usually am a quiet guest but I had two issues this trip. Both were dealt with within 30 minutes with a follow up phone call to make sure I was satisfied. Our view was so lovely that we had room service for breakfast every day. The food was good, nothing spectacular, but the service was amazing. Food arrived as promised with every order done perfectly, ie warm plate, correct utensils, minor requests honored as well as all promised elements included, with the price really only being an extra $3.50 for the delivery. Well worth it.
Pool area is fine, lunch menu at the restaurant near the pool is quite limited but service was excellent.
I can't stress how nice the staff was, how pleasant the resort is, how nothing is too much trouble. I was at the beach, ordered a drink and it never came. As I was walking to get water, the person who took the order saw me, told me the drink was never answered for according to the server and offered me a replacement at no charge. She could have just as easily let me walk by.
The spa was not the most impressive I've seen, but again the service was excellent as was the massage.
As long as you don't expect a resort with a huge beachfront, the Ritz is definately worth it and will make for a nice vacation. I can not understand any of the previous negatives other than disappointment with the size of the beach.
