There was always plenty of food available, however, it was not the best but we never went hungry. Breakfast was our favourite meal because of the familar omelet station and the fresh crepes. Visit the Italian restaurant by the pool for lunch of pizza or pasta; it has a lovely outdoor ambiance.
The nightly entertainment was better than what we have seen from other resorts and the “animation team” put a lot of energy into ensuring there is something for everyone throughout the day. In fact, my partner and I were befriended by several of the dancers. They often invited us to a local bowling alley – a five minute walk away – for a few drinks and a chance to meet some wonderful Cubans. We also went to a nearby Salsa party at another resort and it was a nice chance to see how Cubans celebrate.
The beach was beautiful but the water was very shallow so you had to go far to be able to swim. During low tide you had to go even further out but during this time you could lie in the sun or go swim in the pools.
The rooms were large and spacious and very clean and bright. We found them very welcoming. However, my partner got bitten often by bed bugs, and by judging from others’ bites, he wasn’t the only one to experience this. To be clear, this was not because of cleanliness, but a condition of life in the Caribbean.
We did one snorkeling excursion on a catamaran. It was actually one of the nicer catamarans we have been on because it had lots of shade for those people that did not want to be in the sun all day and plenty of areas to sun bathe.
We also paid $5 CUC per person for a shuttle bus to check out one of the other hotels and use their facilities. Get an extra wristband at the front desk so you can eat and drink there for free. At the end of the day it was nice to see but it is pretty much the same wherever you go so I suggest staying at the hotel.
The staff seemed very nice and helpful overall. There were some instances where the culture took precedence over service where the pace was slower than expected. Tip one or two CUC after a meal or after an order of several drinks – it will get you a smile and the staff will remember you next time.
If you are willing to understand there is a difference and be patient, you will do just fine. Our main problem seemed to be the other tourists when someone stole our hotel towel. Frankly, we found the Cuban workers very friendly and readily willing to put up with some of the rude North American behavior of some guests. Learning a few words in Spanish such as please, thank you, sorry and hello goes a long way and the staff – like anyone – appreciate it.
Getting back to our stolen towel, to have it replaced cost us an extra 15 CUC! We registered a complaint with the front desk but nothing was reported by the time we left. The resort has a strict policy with late checkout and towels. They charge for both. We also decided to pay a little more for a late check-out. It was definitely worth it and it was not that expensive ($10 CUC per hour).
The resort is spacious but not to the point where you have to walk “miles” to get to the ocean, pools and restaurant. As well, you got the impression it was busy and lively, but not over-crowded.
Overall, we’d recommend it for friends, lovers and families.
